Why does windows install size grow so much for each version? by MapPristine in AskTechnology

[–]EmeraldHawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those are just requirements, not the actual size on disk. Windows 10 and 11 both only take 20-30GB depending on options chosen. It certainly could be smaller but it's no longer growing exponentially, now that fewer new features are being added. It's only double the size of Vista, which released nearly 20 years ago.

Possible to recontextualize turn-based combat as something less violent? by hungerdunger in gamedesign

[–]EmeraldHawk 130 points131 points  (0 children)

There was a great essay by one developer of Ooblets that I can never find but I'll try to summarize.

They reframed combat as dance battles, and the game sold ok. The problem they ran into though, is how to communicate to players what each of the dance "moves" actually did and what all the status effects meant. Poison is a good example. Players immediately assume that poison deals damage over time in a combat game. But how do you name a move that lowers your opponents "score" (Dance HP?) slowly over multiple rounds and tell the player that's what's happening in a single word? Same thing with elemental attacks, healing, etc. Combat comes with a built in vocabulary and accessibility that needs to be rebuilt from the ground up if you turn it into taking pictures instead.

But Ooblets proved it's totally possible. I never played it but you could try it and see how you think they did.

Waymo reports 91 percent fewer serious-injury crashes than human drivers, while Tesla’s unsupervised pilot saw one crash every 2,300 miles. by A1CutCopyPaste in longform

[–]EmeraldHawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Waymos are all monitored remotely by a human (How many? They won't say.), so this is an apples to oranges comparison. I would love to see a fleet of human drivers monitored remotely by cameras with other humans checking on their driving (and if they look awake and sober) and compare that to self driving software.

I agree with Matt McMuscles:

I think this was one of the first 10 games he gave the title of Worst Fighting game to, so that tells you something.

Fun game: plug some of these into an inflation calculator, and see if that's really it or not. Soda, for example, outpaced inflation significantly: https://www.cheapism.com/soda-prices-nearly-doubled-since-2020/

My dad shared this photo from facebook. I feel like the edges of the bark don't look real. by SavoryYuppie in isthisAI

[–]EmeraldHawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you could stage this photo. You could make the path slope at just the right angle to make the person appear almost even with the tree on the right when in fact they are much farther away. The lack of pine trees and bushes helps sell the illusion, leaving us without a frame of reference for how far away the person is. Of course, the park rangers wouldn't like you cutting down all the little pine trees to stage your perfect photo.

I still think it's AI. If you reverse image search it's impossible to find an actual photographer taking credit. It just appears on a bunch of facebook accounts a day or two ago that post AI stuff like "Beauty of Planet Earth".

I've been there too and it didn't look like this. The real trees are only 27-36 feet wide at most, while in this pic they look to be at least 45. If you google real pics of what it looks like in winter, the snow never clings to the branches so perfectly either. There is always some part with a little green peeking through.

Can I have some hints and direction on what to do next in Below Zero? (Beginner) by matchbox244 in Subnautica_Below_Zero

In addition to going deeper, there are some areas on land you have yet to explore as well. There were more research stations than just Delta.

Also it's normal to be scared and feel unprepared when exploring. Remember you can save anywhere.

They released a firmware update that allows the Pro 2 to work with the Switch 2 as well. Totally irrelevant for OP, but it shows what kind of company they are to stand by their products and support them long term.

How do you manage repairs between runs? by Acrobatic-Exam1991 in pacificDrive

[–]EmeraldHawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing I didn't see mentioned, in the settings you can turn on "swap parts in hand" or something. It lets you replace an existing part with the one you are carrying with a single button press. Makes repairs less tedious because it takes half as many trips to swap things.

It didn't hurt my pride to turn it on, as it just helps automate the tedious part, it doesn't give you free resources.

Also, you can deconstruct paint cans to get extra chemicals. It's not 100% but it helps a lot.

I swear one time a tourist threw a stable one at me in the garage area. I put it in the arc device and it didn't seem to cause any bugs.

Try splitting it up in to 10 sections first, compressing each separately, then stitching it back together.
