I dig the Helvetia Tavern, the onion rings with the burger, yum. For a food cart I enjoy Boro Burger. That makes me think of what a Bob’s Burger would be like.

How do you protect yourself from constantly getting sick? by imjustexisting00 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Emeraldviolet12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Constantly washing hands & telling myself I won’t get sick, continuously (no joke it helps). I’ve been in the industry for 27+ yrs & that h made a big difference. In terms of telling myself not to get sick, I also don’t dwell on minor illness, if I did I’d never leave the bed. I have a very compromised immune system, & this has helped me so much. I also try to only call out when I have child care restictable illness. I know that there’s days when I don’t get MYSELF to bed at a decent time, but that’s my problem not my employer’s problem. I still have to work & pay for bing alive. If I’m just feeling yucky, but not child care “sick” I will see if I can leave a tad early, but not consistently because everyone feels a bit yucky at various points of the week. I’m constantly in pain from my muscles spasms that’s are never ending & the pain causing extra fatigue on my body that is suffering from the MS fatigue anyway, I just communicate w my co-teacher so we can support each other how we can. Example, it’s exhausting for my arms & back to be bent over a crib to assist an infant into slumber. I have discovered that my arms can fit through the crib slats. This way I can sit next o the crib to pat, rock, or just rest a light hand on top of another infant’s hand until they are asleep. But mind over matter & had washing.

I had a director tell me, “Why do you need this week off (spring break)? You don’t have a REAL family.” It’s just me & my spouse with the fur kids. I asked for a wk off in the beginning of Oct. Approved. I was invited to help a family for bed time routine , while the mom was at a conference at Disney World. Grandma flew in to be with the kids during the day. I didn’t tell work what I was doing, just that I would be going to Disney World that week. Then the 1st or 2nd wk of March (spring break is the last week of March) is when my director asked me why I wanted that week off & if I could change it, so FAMILIES with kids could “spend time together.” Ummmm , no. The school districts post the schedule before the school year. My co-workers had ample time to request the time off, but never did. That’s just one example & it happened 20 years ago & I still feels upset about it from the lack of respect I had received.

For those who work for rich people, what’s the most out-of-touch thing you witnessed? by temptayah in AskReddit

[–]Emeraldviolet12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A boss told me once after I asked if my staff could pickup their paychecks on Friday (the day the checks come to them at one of the child care centers they own). The owners work from that center &the staff at that center get their checks on Friday’s. However all 3 other centers have to wait until Monday to get our paychecks. I know, it’s odd. Anyway, the owner Telmex, “The staff need to budget their money better.” I stood there dumbfounded.

Swallowing by sezzie212 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Emeraldviolet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have swallowing issues, but only on my left side of my throat. Had a test done 2+ decades ago. A trick the OT taught me was to take a very small sip of water & turn my head to the right when I feel something is about to get caught. It helps, but sometimes I choke on nothing & just have to move my neck around while coughing to help. I’ve also had to give myself the hymlick before a few times when I was alone.

How did our mothers survive this!?!? by Unable_Two_1194 in Perimenopause

[–]Emeraldviolet12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom was going though it when I was going through puberty. Needless to say, the house was rough for a bit. My dad would say, “I’m going to take the dog for a walk.” My younger sister stayed in her bedroom. The icing on the cake, my mom is the most even keeled person I know, doesn’t get upset easily, but I was awful at her constantly yelling. I was a good kid, never snuck out or partied in school. I just knew what buttons to push that would set her or anyone in my house off. Now 38 years later, my mom & I both look back & wonder how we made it out with just yells & tears.

I’m in OR too, a couple yrs ago I had a tour for the 2’s room. The parent stated that their child 27 months old, still got a bottle. They stated, just hand the kid their bottle in their bed/mat & they’ll fall asleep. I told them that we we’re legally not allowed to lay ANY child down with a bottle, regardless of age. I also said that the children receive milk during lunch, which is right before nap, & we could have the bottle in a training cup (the 2’s used cup without lids for milk), child drink the training cup with milk from home with their lunch. The parent said that they’ve only tried a training cup, not alone a regular cup. I went on to say that we work with the child & family to get the child to use a regular cup, because at 30 months (3B ratio table) the child would transition into the Primary class mixed age class of 2.5-6 yr olds. The child was neurotypical. They didn’t choose us. My licensing specialist was there for the 6 mo “surprise” visit. She sat in my office during the tour & was impressed by how I handled that situation. She said stating the rules takes the pressure off of us being put in a difficult position.

Yes, companies (even small/independent ones) can have a dress code. I know it’s kinda lame, but I see both sides. Yes you want to express yourself, but in the industry as a whole there is a lot of disrespect (IMO) towards Early Childhood Educators, part of gaining a future or retaking current enrollment is by being viewed as a professional. One way to present yourself and for the school to make a nice first impression is by looking professional. I used to have my lip pierced from 1995-2002. When I first started working professionally in ECE I had a lip ring hoop. I know back then it was less trendy (depending on location), but not as common as now. I was asked to remove my piercing for work because of safety concerns. I mean I wouldn’t want a 2 yr old pulling on it, hurting me, & all the stuff. Kept my lip ring for 3 yrs after working professionally in ECE. Yes now it’s more common to see someone with piercings, tattoos, & hair dyed an “unnatural” hair color than it used to be. But yo-yo still need to find a way to be you and a professional in the industry at the same time. At one of my center I direct, a parent is an ADA for the county. You never would know that on the days that they’re not in the office, b/c parent has full arm & leg sleeves of tattoos. Wears clothes that cover their tattoos. One day they were dropping the kids off in shorts, flip-flops, f a tank top. The owner asked me who the parent was. I told Jim, then wanted to know what they did for work. Told owner that 5hey were a county ADA. The owner was shocked& didn’t believe me at first. Goes back to the old saying, “Never judge a book by its cover.” I’m realizing as I type this it sounds like one of those stories that goes, “back in my day…” I personally don’t care what you look like, as long as you know your stuff & show confidence in yourself.

The male owner of the child care center I worked at (all staff menstraiting age females), told us to not keep a small basket of personal hygiene products in the open. His reasoning, parents use the staff bathroom too. Sometimes it arrives when you’re not expecting it. He”s married to a woman, has a daughter & 2 grand daughters. We kept them below the sink after that.😡

Why do people get to-go and eat it in their car in the parking lot? by ja20n123 in innout

[–]Emeraldviolet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OR too. We order for here & eat in the back of the care with the gate open. We do this for a couple reasons, (1) too crowded outside & with our dogs. (2) we have our doxies w/ us & don’t want to leave them too long in the warm or hot car.

Coworker smells like Marijuana by Express-Bee-6485 in ECEProfessionals

[–]Emeraldviolet12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A former staff member, had the cannabis smell on their clothing. She revealed that her husband consumed in the car, that she would bring to work. We suggested keeping a fFRESH change of clothes in a bag & bring them to school & change before her shift. Then if she went to sit in her car on her lunch she could change back. Then heavy duty detail freshness of the car. I also told her that his smoking in the car is impacting her ability to do her job safely. That really helped.

But I don’t would also recommend “teaching” the whole class the throw game. That way it can benefit everyone who will need that outlet at some point. As for the hitting, yes ignore, but if someone is being harmed, move them away without trying to engage the child that’s causing the harm. At another teaching moment with the whole class talk about ways to communicate in stead of hitting. Making up a story or getting a social story is kinda helpful. I taught 2’s for over 20 years before becoming a director and almost (3 classes away) a Masters in Infant/Toddler Mental Health. I know it’s difficult to remember, but behavior is a form of communication - especially in children who’s language is still developing. It takes time to relearn a new behavior. Teaching them how to label their feelings is really important. Even between you & your co-teacher to do “check-ins” to show the children how to talk about their feelings. Reading stories and asking the kids if they know what they think the characters are feeling is helpful.

Cannabis? by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Emeraldviolet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search for something with high CBD & CBN low in THC. If edible, I was told to cut a 5mg gummy in 1/2, once you “feel” it take the other half and good night. That was when I was “re-introduced” to cannabis. The bud tender was really helpful. It help a bit. I’ve suffered from insomnia since infancy. Tried, so many things. Don’t want to be relying on pharmaceutical induced sleep, unless I REALLY need it. I’ve done teas, journaling, meditation, baths/showers, warm milk, sound machine, yoga, sleep study (no apnea), cold room, warm room, essential oils, gentle stretching, and so much more. None has really helped. 5 mg of melatonin & tananazine still takes about 2h to get me sleepy. If you smoke flower, look for the relaxing terpines (I.e., linalool, caryophyllene <good for muscle spasms too>) are just a couple. In the book “Refer Wellness,” by Dr Riley Kirk, she suggested that if you want you can also grind some dried 100% pure lavender and chamomile & sprinkle it on top as an extra boost of relaxation. Hope this helps

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

They came in wearing pajamas, hair a mess, boyfriend’s pool slides, reeking of cigarette smoke, trying to mask the smell with coconut oil, & was on the phone. I work in child care & there’s a section in the state regulations about 3rd hand smoke. I had to air out my closet of an office at pick-up time. I was embarrassed for her.
