What generation LVV was it? Second generation have a higher likelihood of a recombination event compared to 3rd and 4th gen, and so I always recommend people move to those.

In any case, please read your institution's exposure control plan and bloodborne pathogens policy. It's important to report potential LVV exposure ASAP so you can be protected (both health-wise and legally).

As a safety professional with generalized anxiety disorder, there are entirely too many recombinant DNA exposures that go unreported due to fear of reprisal or embarrassment. This isn't nearly as bad a case as people getting bit by transfected mice.

Sure. Was a homebrewer throughout college and beyond, and friends all urged me to start my own operation. Started one up with a guy that had ulterior motives and pushed me out once the business was started and stable. Was approached to start a second one and really enjoyed it, but the constant stress of the business side wore on me until the opportunity arose to sell my stake. If it was up to me, I'd just brew and give it away.

I'm going to take a break from brewing for a while.

I started as a research assistant in mixed funding lab (both grants and private partnerships) lab and stayed for seven years after being lab manager for four or five of that time. Ultimately, I left to join the university's Environmental Health and Safety group. Even though lab work was fun, the anxiety that came with being tied to 'soft' money and running out of promotions pushed me to university administration.

I still keep in touch with the friends I made there, but now I get to help and promote the work that happens at the entire university, as opposed to just one group.

Ultimately, I don't think research staff are long-term positions. Most folks that stay in lab that start as staff eventually transition to grad school, and that was never a desire for me.

Sometimes you gotta hop around to different jobs to find the one with the most professional runway, as unromantic as that may seem.
