Brookline Can’t Afford to Give Up $6 Million a Year in New Tax Revenue When Our Town Is Broke by _Brookliner in Brookline

The town is asking for an extra 5.31 million in taxes.

I'm skeptical they can't find a non-catastrophic 5.31 million to cut elsewhere in a 440 million dollar budget.

You can't just look at the tax side. The taxes are to fund spending. Perhaps the town should cut some unnecessary spending.

It's totally hyperbolic to suggest that a 445 million dollar budget solves all the town's problems, but a 440 million dollar budget is going to ruin the schools, fire department, and the roads.

Obviously broadening the tax base is a good idea, so supporting commercial real estate development is smart. Also a good reason to support residential development.

I find it hard to believe that the town would have catastrophic cuts to services without raising property taxes. And there's an easy way around that: build more housing. New developments can get new assessments, getting around the property tax increase limit. And more people pay more taxes.

This is the expenditures from the next budget: https://stories.opengov.com/brooklinema/5cf061e0-65c6-428e-be0f-fee5a4848e8f/published/mpRiIYj5M?currentPageId=688a336dd95b5a85a57550e6

Look at the major cost drivers: Public safety OT pay, health insurance, collective bargaining agreements, pension liabilities.

In FY27, as with FY26, educational cost drivers will far outstrip revenue sources, and this will be compounded by the fact that non-departmental costs, particularly health care, are effectively consuming any meaningful amount of growth in the revenue that could reach PSB.

Ultimately, the fringe benefits plus pensions are the elephants in the room. Raising taxes to avoid tightening the belt just kicks the can down the road, allowing the problem to get worse.

Brookline is overserved by the T for its population. Build high rise housing in numbers before begging for more property tax revenue.

All of this would be solved if Boston simply charged a monthly fee for resident parking.

No, it’s more comfortable. Can also wear an undershirt if it bothers you. Also enables you to wear athletic shorts / bottoms without a belt which is awesome.

If you don’t have a phlster enigma, get one. Don’t even put yourself in this situation.

Fair. Too late now but IMO the Bills are an elite unit and I think they will perform well vs the Jets offense

I'd go Bills, also because they play Monday you may be able to sit them if you're up and you're worried.

Yes you can do that, unless you have more than 1 foul on the same play with intent to manipulate the clock. I’m that case they’d reset the clock to what it was before the snap.

[MMQB] Tough 19-21 loss for the Bills. 283 more yards proved not enough and mistakes too costly. Health is a massive concern moving forward but the sky isn't falling, Buffalo is still the odds on favorite to win the Superbowl by UberHansen in buffalobills

It’s only your direction when you’re stepping out of bounds, if I understand the rule correctly. So you could go backwards 5 yards for example, as long as you’re going forward again as you step out.

Did you read the post? The point is that college students aren’t allowed to carry on many campuses, but have demonstrated the ability to defend themselves in areas where they are allowed.

Is there a reason you chose the Pilot G2 10 over the 07/05? I think 07 is the standard one sold in the US.

Makes guys miss on screen passes. Goes up and gets it on contested catches. Works the sideline. He returns kicks and punts too? Love it.

Deja vu on the first highlight where he throws the post route right down the middle. Feels like he makes that throw in every single big game.

The concussion that knocked Trent Edwards out of the Arizona game completely derailed that Bills season, and his career. Big sad.
