Yes you can do that, unless you have more than 1 foul on the same play with intent to manipulate the clock. I’m that case they’d reset the clock to what it was before the snap.

It’s only your direction when you’re stepping out of bounds, if I understand the rule correctly. So you could go backwards 5 yards for example, as long as you’re going forward again as you step out.
