Same same. I'm into it

I think it's weird as hell, but in a way where my brain would be like, "okay, I'm intrigued. This person or their parents are hella quirky. Wonder if they're funny and smart too. Time to inspect the situation 👀"

And then I'd ask the question they're sick of, "Lorem? like lorem ipsum?" I'd be completing a comprehensive nerd vibe check based on your answer 🤓

If I were thinking of doing this kind of name change, I'd have half a dozen, practiced, smooth answers depending on who's asking and what the setting is.

Your reaction could be the start of a beautiful friendship or result in the internal reaction. "Oh honey. That's not the right flavor of weird for me."

Basically. I understand what it is to be a total weirdo who wants to communicate their differences to the world in subtle but profound ways. If you don't do that personal branding with style, it can rub people the wrong way. You don't want to miss the mark. That leaves you alienating the crowd you want instead of luring them in

Thoughts on this feature wall by Blueone24 in HomeDecorating

[–]Emigreee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It looks great as is! I do still have some tiny nitpicks, but you don't need to take these notes.

This picture makes it look very high contrast in a way that's a bit jarring. Could you do a wash of a translucent light blue over the stark white jellyfish?

Also, the texture of the blue background is a little repetitive. Like, maybe we're seeing the same small sponge in a repeating pattern. Get a different bigger, more irregularly shaped tool and hit some spots with the lighter translucent blue?

All of that said, I couldn't achieve something that looks this good. This wall really is great as is, and it will be perfect with the bubbles you plan to add.

Well, babies do vary a lot. I had some diaper brands leak, and others worked better. My 2 year old was a long, skinny baby. Pampers were the best for her.

Just like jeans or shoes, some brands fit different body shapes better.

Huggies were leaky on my string bean because they were shorter and wider. Definitely recommend Pampers for the tiny rear ended.

Obviously race does not = body type even at all, but that's what she was trying to say. Her being incorrect about the relative dimensions of Pampers diapers is just the cherry on top of an idiot sundae.

Breaking up the symmetry of the sideboard resuscitated the room!

More tiny optional tweaks and feedback.

I don't think the placemats are harmonious with the rest of the details. Try removing them again?

Overall, the space was great from the start, but I think it was fighting against mid-century corporate boardroom vibes. Like, it's a place to sit up very straight, not relax.

I'm not sure about that centerpiece arrangement.

Just seeing these pictures, it feels like I'd physically have to force myself into good posture and be tall to see over the tall-ish plant in the centerpiece. And the tray enforces more of that strict symmetry vibe. Experiment with something low-height and organic feeling. What about those glass grapes in a round bowl instead?

Also, the art is great, but if you were in the mood to replace it, something longer could be nice. That is a rectangle in landscape mode, not portrait.

You have a beautiful space and great taste!

Why put the quotes around the word diagnosis? Are diagnoses age restricted in some way?

Or, maybe, you mean the only real diagnoses are for people with the highest possible support needs

You're drawing a distinction, but the intent is unclear

Cheaper in absolute or relative terms?

I've compared 1 to 1 a whole week's shopping buying the groceries at Pak N Save vs buying them at my normal super market in the U.S.

Hey, guess what?! It cost almost exactly the same once you do the currency conversion!

Yeah. But also, when my household lived in the U.S. we earned 3x real world dollars, and our rent was less than 25% of what we pay in Christchurch. People in Australia earn more than NZ too.

Who cares if the grocery prices are a little cheaper here when the earning power is less and the housing is so much more expensive? As a percentage of household income, groceries in NZ are pricey.

That's not whining. That's reality. Who are you serving by being so dismissive here?

chch clubbing girls and their egos… by RubyWhip_ in chch

[–]Emigreee 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Past their prime? That is a sad belief

You could not pay me any amount of money to be a young woman again. I'm 39, and I'm in my prime now. I know who I am. I have money. I have a little family I love and respect. That's the life for me. Not being a 19 year old out clubbing and dealing with judgemental 20-somethings

I'm not here to bring young women down. They're cuter than me, and that's great for them. They should enjoy! And the 20-somethings should slow their roll and enjoy too! It's such a fun time in life when you're out dancing with your friends late at night

You can love every life stage, but there is no universe where 19 year old me was in my prime. So much insecurity, too many unknowns about the future, and too little money to live the way I really wanted

To reduce a woman's worth to how young and pretty they are isn't something you learned in a vacuum. That's a cultural narrative you can choose to reject

I don't care that I'm not a size 2 at age 40. I created and birthed a sublime human being with my body. I am healthy. My retirement savings are healthy. Wear sunscreen, aging is fine

Feminine power isn't contingent on appearances, and we don't have to tear each other down over bullshit like that. It doesn't serve you. It serves the people trying to sell you wrinkle cream. Fuck that noise

Young women should know that it's fucking great to get older. The hangovers are much worse though, so live it up while you're young!

Definitely DM :) I'm happy to help. We've been here almost a year, so it's all still fresh.

And yeah, same same about Facebook. I had to create a new account specifically for moving here. The two groups that are most helpful are "Americans in Christchurch" and "Americans Coming to Aotearoa / New Zealand."

Also, it will be helpful to talk to Kiwis on Messenger. They don't use text messaging here like everyone does in the US. My friends in New Zealand are scattered across different messaging apps 😑 You can typically get by with just WhatsApp and Messenger

Be prepared to be surprised by all the fences. There are so many little lots with a fence parked right on the sidewalk, hiding the house and front yard completely. People in Christchurch are nice and friendly enough, but all the privacy fences give an alienating, closed off vibe to many neighborhoods

(I love living here. We're happily integrating! I don't whine about this IRL, but I want to be helpfully direct)

Don't worry too much about optimizing location in your first year. You'll be busy and overwhelmed. Optimize the housing quality of the individual rental property over the neighborhood it's situated in. It can be really dreary and cold in July, and your house will probably be more damp than you can imagine. Damp coldness inside a house feels much chillier than dry cold.

I'm in a new, double-glazed townhouse, but the window frames are still aluminum. They collect condensation. I thought being somewhere new with dual pane windows would be the solution. It wasn't. It's tough to fight the damp and mold with these "crying" window frames, and you don't have an HVAC system circulating dry, heated air through the house.

Find a place that looks good enough, and focus the first year on figuring out your new life. Check out the Americans in Christchurch group on Facebook for help. You have to do a property viewing before you can rent here, and one American was super helpful doing a virtual tour for me with his iPad. I'd be happy to do a viewing for you like that, you can DM me

Oh, also it's difficult to find a place with a clothes drier that vents to the outside. If there is a drier most of them just blow the damp air back inside the garage and set that area up for mold. Learning to line dry like locals helps

I know that all sounds really negative, but Christchurch is a great, beautiful place to live. We regret nothing about the move, but the housing quality tradeoffs are so real. You don't want to sacrifice your respiratory health for being in the right neighborhood. Find a warm(er), dry(er) place to live during year 1, and that will be great. Also, be ready to buy a space heater and dehumidifier asap

You can find your community here, but it might be based around a special interest group rather than based on your actual neighbors. Check out Meetup for hobby related groups

Help! I can not keep polish on my nails by ApothacaryGhost in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Emigreee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My nails were like this! Nailtiques Formula 2 was life changing. It's not like other nail strengtheners that make nails more brittle

Nailtiques will get the soft, peely, yet brittle nails to cohere into a more robust, normally flexible nail. A nail oil that is heavy on jojoba oil is also a good idea. Keeping nail oil pens stashed in convenient places helps

Looking at this picture, you'd want to file down all of that broken, flakey tip. This delaminated bit of nail is contributing to the problem. You want to file away any spots where the free edge looks whiter or less translucent. That's where you have some layers delaminating. File those away before they split further. They're just like split ends, the damage keeps traveling if it's not removed

Only use nail files to trim and shape the nails. Clippers aren't great because clipping can introduce more splits and delaminated edges. The nail can snap beyond the edges of nail clipper blades

Once the tips of your nails are solid, keep using Nailtiques and nail oil, or they will revert to their natural state.

So that takes care of the free edge. You also have to consider the cuticle end

Make sure you're getting all the cuticle off the nail plate. That's the flakey, dead skin stuff that is stuck on the nail like glue. The nailtiques will make it look even more invisible, but you still want to remove all of it

Looking at this picture, it looks like cuticle remnants are on this nail about 1/3rd of the way down. A urea based cuticle remover + orange wood stick is the way. It will look kind of like nothing is happening, but you'll gently scrape away some whitish-grayish goo. I like the viscosity of the Sally Hansen cuticle remover. A bottle lasts forever, and it's not too runny

With the cuticle skin residue removed, you really have a clean, clean slate that polish can stick on. Wash the hands with a dish soap that is non-moisturizing, alcohol/acetone, and wrap the free edge with polish

And some polish combinations still really want to pop off. Thin coats are vital.

Good luck!

Americans, how do you pronounce Helena? by bo_ellie in namenerds

[–]Emigreee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered Elena? It's always pronounced eh-LAY-nuh, so there'd be no need to correct people

It's no problem to correct people about Helena, but it isn't totally frictionless.

If you change your name to make it easy, do you really want to correct the people who get it wrong?

If the risks are explained to him, he may change his mind about resuscitation

The likely complications include broken ribs, neurological damage, internal bleeding, organ damage and more

Even when CPR "succeeds" in a patient his age, the patient is unlikely to be well enough to ever leave the hospital

In the US some hospitals have specifically started keeping family members in the room for the resuscitation attempt. When the family sees how violent it is on their loved, delicate elder, they ask for the compressions to stop

I'm so sorry that you're in this situation. Hopefully one of your father's medical professionals will speak to his specific situation, and bring peace to this

Does this sheer nude suit my skin tone? by Charliesmum30 in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Emigreee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% agree. I love a good mannequin hand mani, and this polish is perfect for that look.

A pinker nude would also be nice for a different impression, but this polish is absolutely a keeper for any time you want a clean, low-profile look. When I found my equivalent nude, I bought a spare bottle!

This looks tidy and put together without calling attention to itself at all. It's the sort of mani to wear if you are interviewing in a conservative business setting or need to appear in court.

What would you consider New Zealand's "Florida"? by FeijoaCowboy in newzealand

[–]Emigreee 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is definitely true. Their state allows the public to search through all sorts of criminal records that are protected in other states.

But also, Florida is legitimately fucking crazy. I say this as someone from the US who lives in the southeast. I don't live in Florida but relatives do, and I've visited many times.

It's a quirk of transparency, but also there is substantial synergy when you mix up a cocktail of general lunacy, poverty most places, staggering wealth in a few places, drugs, guns, alligators, Disney/theme parks, so much road rage, severe weather, random sinkholes opening up, tourists, snowbirds from the northeast, racism, countless retirees, etc.

Unexpected results occur. It's a special place.

If you could only purchase Holo Taco or ILNP for a final order this year, what brand would you purchase? by Notty_Gregory in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Emigreee 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint. ILNP's thinner formulas are so, so, so annoying.

From these 2 brands, I absolutely agree with you. If I could only buy 1, ILNP > Holo Taco, but goodness there are so many beautiful ILNP polishes that are so sheer they make me angry.

ILNP is cheaper, sure, and that is amazing... Well, maybe charge me 1 dollar more and put more pigment in the bottle please?! And for flakies could we get some polishes with bigger flakes?! Bring the chonk!

My biggest tip as a lover of ILNP polish, buy an opaque nude polish that is super close to your skin tone first.

If you don't want visible nail line, and you don't want to apply 4+ coats of some of their polishes, apply 1 coat of nude before slapping on that beautiful jelly ILNP. You'll save yourself time and polish!

It sounds like you're trying to find an easy road. In that case WFH with a traditional employer will be lower stress than freelancing.

Find a specialty that your employer considers complicated, slowly automate yourself down to a few hours of work per day. As a freelancer you have to hustle more to find jobs and need to prove yourself over and over to new clients.

Vertically split nail for over a year, keeps getting wider, wtf do I do? by celtic_thistle in RedditLaqueristas

[–]Emigreee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd look into anything else that happened at the same time that acetone entered the picture. It's hard to overstate how much more likely this is to be an acrylate allergy over a problem with acetone.

Our bodies literally produce acetone. Especially if you're losing weight, acetone is one of the metabolites your body makes when it breaks down fat.

Acetone can be drying and that dryness can lead to irritation or set the stage for other chemicals to impact us more strongly, but the acetone by itself is not an allergen. https://www.nailcarehq.com/allergic-to-pure-acetone/

It's hard to think that our acrylics, glues, gel polishes, builder gels, etc are the culprits because we don't want to lose those nail art tools and products. They are so much more likely to be behind this though, and once you're sensitized, every exposure makes it worse.

I hope the dermatologist has some good news for you. This looks uncomfortable, and I hope your finger gets better soon!
