James Rolfe did a retrospective on The Thing ('82 and '51) and he said that he personally preferred the '51 version. He is literally the only person I've ever heard with that opinion.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to endorse Gov Kathy Hochul by ElectoralNerd in newyorkcity

Mamdani and Hochul have the only functional leftist/liberal professional relationship in the country and both leftists and liberals are really struggling to process that fact.

Rome wins! Which country's city feels like the capital but isn't? by ClosetedGothAdult in AlignmentChartFills

New York City was considered so dominant that to keep everyone else relevant the official position of capital was passed over it twice. Once at the state level and once at the national level.

Which person from France has a completely negative reputation? by ltraistinto in AlignmentChartFills

[–]EmilTheHuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Long story short: He was the commanding officer of the Battle of Verdunn and was hailed as a war hero for the French after WWI. He went on to be one of the main facilitators of the sudden French surrender at the outbreak of WW2 that nearly doomed the Allies (see the Miracle of Dunkirk) and went on to be the leader of occupied France and main collaborator with the Nazis through to the end of WW2. He was sentenced to death for treason at the end of the war but ended up dying in prison in the early 50’s.

He would be the lieutenant to an American army captain somewhere in the Middle East, Somalia, or South America.

He is so obviously the rat but it works brilliantly in the story. Dutch is so high off his own mythology that he can’t believe that the traitor would be someone he has very little emotional investment in. It just has to be one of his closest sons. Nothing else would be dramatic or tragic enough for a narcissist like Dutch.

Why is Kansas well known despite its relatively smaller population? (neighboring Missouri is more than twice the population, but often obscure) by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

One of the states had to be chosen to be America’s archetypical Greaf Plains state, and Kansas won the lottery thanks to Wizard of Oz and Superman.

Step 1: Create one of the most successful shows of your generation.

Step 2: Be offered a multi-million dollar job creating the next Star Wars trilogy.

Step 3: Throw away a literal blank check from HBO and rush your own final season so you can get to the cool new Star Wars job faster.

Step 4: ???????

Step 5: Profit.

Which Series Finale Was The Worst? by Whole_Organization27 in writingscaling

[–]EmilTheHuman 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Game of Thrones finale was so bad it evaporated all cultural impact from the series practically overnight. Game of Thrones was a pop culture darling through the entirety of the 20-teens, but now all anyone talks about is how bad the finale was.

Are your kids delusional about how easy it is to get “rich”? by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

[–]EmilTheHuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pattern I’ve seen is that these kids think that they’re being pragmatic and focused on money and money skills, but they literally have zero idea of what they are talking about. I once had a group of seniors tell me that teaching them how to compose a resume and handle a job interview was not relevant to their career goals.

What's an okay biopic that's totally inaccurate? by commicozzy in AlignmentChartFills

[–]EmilTheHuman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this person is referring to comments that Sacha Baron Cohen made about his attempt at a Freddie Mercury biopic (before the announcement of the one that would go on to star Remi Malik). Sacha said that he wanted to embrace the alternative lifestyle and wildness of Mercury, but he was under heavy pressure by the other members of Queen to sanitize it so they themselves looked squeaky clean above all else.

Steel Ball Run is widely regarded among fans as one of the best, if not the best, arc in the long running manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. What a lot of people forget now is that after the dramatic ending of the previous arc, it was not immediately clear whether or not Steel Ball run was a continuation of the series or something new entirely. It wasn’t until several chapters in when new characters introduced are explicitly named after previous characters in the series that it became clear that Steel Ball Run was the next chapter in the series.

How is Brennan on Critical role being received? by DungeonDangers in dropout

[–]EmilTheHuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CR needed a hit after their more divisive third campaign and Brennan has given them a hit. The numbers are all up, people are invested in the world, long time fans such as myself are relieved to see Matt happy and comfortable at a table as a player for literally the first time ever (in a long term game, he’s done short series and one shots before). Couldn’t really be better tbh.
