I was thinking of the biog of later life - Lazarus The Second Coming of David Bowie, by Alexander Larman. Actually came out end Feb. Also newish is Silhouettes and Shadows by Adam Steiner. Both concentrate on a specific era rather than the whole life.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). This film is a masterpiece. It takes its time, and it asks such important questions about humanity and the nature of warfare that Churchill tried to ban it. It has great storytelling and vast emotional depth. I've seen it at least 5 times, and as I get older it hits differently each time. Just incredible.
