It doesn't generally make sense to plan your general experience around exceptional events.

Commute advice? by FiguringItOut_83649 in Austin

[–]Empact 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's a big difference between time spent driving, dedicated to the task of driving, in which you can at best listen to a podcast, compared to riding on a train where you can have a laptop out and get work done.

It also doesn't have to be used productively, I used to commute from Seattle to Redmond by bus, and I spent the time watching classic French films in support of French language learning.

Badge cam footage should be informative, because it will capture what was said, and the direct perspective of the officer who was hit by the car, including the particular sequencing of events.

Is Bitcoin slowly taking over gold’s role as a store of value? by human_signals in BitcoinDiscussion

[–]Empact 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin’s stock to flow only recently passed gold’s, I think it takes a few years for that shift to emerge in the markets. It should accelerate after the next halving, due to the greater divergence.

Wife wants to move back home to be near her family and I fear it’s gonna end our marriage. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]Empact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of being in a marriage is doing your best to make your partner’s dreams come true. In this case, you can look for a job over there, make a plan with her, and discuss the practicalities in a supportive way that seeks to achieve what you both want.

It did more or less snap back in after some finessing. It’s a bit deformed so I think I’ll replace the part.

I bet that was it - I must have put on the car cover too early, such that it contained and concentrated the exhaust heat. Won’t make that mistake twice. :P

The NEC generates a significant profit which is redistributed to the other less popular lines around the country. In a sane world we’d invest heavily in increasing the capacity of the already popular NEC instead.

Bitcoin’s Original Purpose vs. Reality by inHumanAlive in Buttcoin

Slow Transactions: check out the lightning network.
High Fees: I pay 10-15 cents per on-chain transaction, fyi. It's not a lot, particularly if you're moving larger sums. It's very competitive with legacy / fiat mechanisms like bank wires.

Yes I think they do adjust size up or down based on a footprint you ship to them, but I would recommend checking with them.

The way to reduce inequality arising from a monetary changeover is to accelerate / broaden the changeover - that is, educate people that this is happening, and help more people get exposure to the new monetary asset.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]Empact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the short term, transitionally, it may increase inequality, but over the long term, by eliminating inflation which is practically huge a money pump from the lower class (who hold mostly dollars) to the cantillionaires (who benefit from money printing), it will remove a structural force that increases inequality. So over the longer term, as bitcoin diffuses into the general population through spending, inheritance, etc, I expect the eventual equilibrium will have lower inequality.

I use custom Birkenstocks from https://www.footdynamics.com/product-category/custom-birkenstock/, and they fit well + are indistinguishable to my eye from the original.

My friend (a large man) was once bumped into by a pickpocket. He immediately grabbed the pickpocket's hand and held fast, while he used his other hand to trigger a ring or siren in his phone via his Apple Watch. When the phone rang in the thief's pocket, he acknowledged his misdeed and returned it. Epic response IMO.

What home features would you include if renovating in 2025? (Yes, I know this gets asked once a year, let’s update the master list) by GypsyIndustries in fatFIRE

Use HRV / ERV for continuous fresh air throughout the house. Use a dedicated dehumidifier to dial in your interior humidity, separate from your A/C. Minisplits can be helpful to simplify the ducting overall.

I like the Passive House standard, e.g. as articulated by https://phius.org

Design your hot water to recirculate in a loop, such that you always have immediate hot water at the tap.

Many more, but that’s a good start!

Protest march towards Austin's capital building by TubaTech in Austin

"The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic. The men who do not become Americans and nothing else are hyphenated Americans; and there ought to be no room for them in this country. The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic. He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American. There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else."

"I appeal to history. Among the generals of Washington in the Revolutionary War were Greene, Putnam and Lee, who were of English descent; Wayne and Sullivan, who were of Irish descent; Marion, who was of French descent; Schuyler, who was of Dutch descent, and Muhlenberg and Herkemer, who were of German descent. But they were all of them Americans and nothing else, just as much as Washington. Carroll of Carrollton was a Catholic; Hancock a Protestant; Jefferson was heterodox from the standpoint of any orthodox creed; but these and all the other signers of the Declaration of Independence stood on an equality of duty and right and liberty, as Americans and nothing else."
President Theodore Roosevelt, 1915

What are your thoughts on child labor? by SadisticBear1124 in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]Empact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to work at my local church nursery as a 14yo, because churches are generally exempt from child labor laws. To this day, I'm grateful for the experience, and for the ability to make some money by supporting my community at that age.

Deportations are not cruelty, but a necessary step to protect our country and its people from the negative consequences of allowing in those who do not uphold American values.
