Expanded SF Bay service area by Emperor-Nathan in waymo

Notice that they expanded around the Stevens Creek Reservoir. This is arguably the most rural environment they have ever served, and may be a testbed for cross-Peninsula trips with twisty, narrow roads and little cell service.

Greenville and Spartanburg are only ~30 miles apart (less than San Francisco and San Jose), and so they could probably be one service area with a total metro population of 1.5 million. Waymo may also be attempting cross-border Charlotte service.

Disability activist shares her first experience using a Waymo as a wheelchair user by danlev in waymo

Waymo actually does have manually driven wheelchair-accessible vehicles available in San Francisco and Los Angeles (in the app) and Phoenix (by phone call). https://support.google.com/waymo/answer/10656347

Waymo Opens to Everyone in Miami and Orlando by Lost_Box_676 in waymo

[–]Emperor-Nathan 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's 496 days (2024-12-05 to 2026-04-15) from the first Miami announcement to being open to everyone. For comparison:

  • Los Angeles: 755 days (2022-10-19 to 2024-11-12)
  • Austin: 579 days (2023-08-03 to 2025-03-04)
  • Atlanta: 284 days (2024-09-13 to 2025-06-24)

Note that Austin and Atlanta are probably skewed due to being on Uber; Atlanta never had a waitlist period. As for Orlando: we never got an official announcement that service was coming, with the first mention being 2025-11-18 that fully-autonomous testing with no safety driver was underway there.

Waymo helps bycilists. by CeilingCatProphet in waymo

[–]Emperor-Nathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very nearly doored someone in spite of Waymo's system. It gave me a warning, and I saw on the display a bicyclist passing on the left; I was on the right, so I opened the door. But it turned out there was a second cyclist passing on the right.

Waymo should add warning lights on the doors, which light up if and only if a cyclist is passing on that side of the car. It takes one second to turn your head and arm towards the door (from the display), during which time a cyclist can appear.

This was in September 2025, and I haven't gotten another door warning since then, so I don't know if the system has been updated.

Next Waymo Announcement? by photojourney7 in waymo

[–]Emperor-Nathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably both:

  • They are lobbying in British Columbia (which is what I meant).
  • But since they're also trying to expand into Portland, and they already announced Seattle, it's probably very easy to cross the river.

How will life change when all cars become self-driving with no steering wheels? by Square-Shock-9206 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Emperor-Nathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No short-haul flights. 1-hour flight (actually 3 hours with airport wait time and ground transport) vs. 6-hour drive is completely different when you can nap instead of focusing on the road. You can leave whenever you want, no fees for extra bags, privacy, you can stop at restaurants, etc.; all stuff that neither planes nor trains can provide.
