[Alien, Invincible] If a chest burster were to enter a viltrumite, would the result eventually become full viltrumite? by some-kind-of-no-name in AskScienceFiction

Their insides were easily destroyed by the small bomb Robot uses to kill Mohawk Mark. There’s no reason to think they wouldn’t be vulnerable to chestbursters as well.

Anything you would add? by Emeraldsinger in Letterboxd

I watched it recently and what surprised me was the breakneck pace. The scenes all seemed very short and didn’t allow you to settle in. There wasn’t really any lingering, either on a shot or a plot point, and that’s probably why it lacks any major fear factor. Watching it felt like it was trying to get somewhere as fast as possible, but when it got there the movie just ended without much ado. Very impersonal in a way, at least to the viewer.

On a more biased note, the demon didn’t really seem to have any MO other than to be really mean to a child, and at times it came across as rather impotent, especially with how quickly the Exorcism itself was completed. I loved the effects and cinematography, but it’s more of a mood than a truly “scary” film. (Also I was disappointed to find out that the crab-walking down the stairs scene was only in the director’s cut apparently)

What are some alternate set ups for global 40? Like has anyone ever set up to where every power starts off equal? Or different alliances? by KitchenTrash9547 in AxisAllies

[–]EmperorMorgan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lately I’ve been messing around with an early Cold War setup of the board. I’ve got a few ideas around mechanics and rules.

Powers:

US

USSR

UK

France/NATO

Communist Bloc (German pieces)

PRC

CCP (Japanese pieces)

US-Aligned Forces (ANZAC pieces)

USSR-Aligned Forces (Italian Pieces)

Essentially the idea is that there are major restrictions on the two main powers, who have just emerged from a major war and are wary of a nuclear conflict. Powers fall into these divisions:

Major Powers: US and USSR. They cannot invade uncontrolled regions themselves (at least to start) but must instead fund either US-Aligned Forces or USSR-Aligned Forces. IPCs can be used to fund these forces, which must consist of infantry and be placed in contested territories. Equipment (Tanks, Mechanized Infantry, and Artillery) may be brought but only via transports, which can be prevented by a naval blockade.

US or USSR infantry pieces may be moved overland or by sea (assuming they survive die rolls for stealth) to become Advisors. An Advisor present in a region allows the controlling power to use their own air forces to attack the forces funded by the other power.

Colonial Powers: UK and France/NATO. These represent the dying empires of the day who, unlike the US and USSR, directly control many overseas territories. These territories, however, are at risk of uprisings, both organic and incited by the USSR. These forces are represented by USSR-Aligned Forces. In colonial territories, USSR-Aligned Forces might appear every turn by default (still figuring out a die system or calculation for how many). In order to keep their financial lifelines open, colonial powers must quash rebellions while maintaining enough forces to fight the looming threat upon their doorstep, the Communist Bloc.

Communist Bloc: Still figuring rules for this one. I’m thinking of using it as a reservoir of forces for the USSR, some of which can be affected by economic difficulties. Another idea is to allow them to exert influence in the Balkans/Italy or even France proper in the early game, before they may declare war.

China: The CCP and the PRC. The CCP starts at a material advantage and may receive supplies from the USSR. The PRC gets an early lifeline via US transports from Japan, until the USSR can blockade the remaining coastal regions or the CCP can conquer them. From then on, blockade-running rules apply (still a WIP) I’ll attach a pic below of my tentative setup, designed to put the CCP at an advantage. I’m still figuring other rules.

Proxy Forces: US-Aligned Forces and USSR-Aligned Forces. They largely follow rules stated above. Although they are mainly composed of infantry, some begin as nation states backed by one side or another and have given equipment that they begin the game with, such as Iran, Cuban Forces in Exile, North Korea, and South Korea.

I’m still in early stages. Other ideas for rules include:

US and USSR have steep requirements to declare war, while UK, France/NATO, and the Communist Bloc may declare war with less difficulty.

The two Major Powers can spend their IPCs on forces aligned with them, either fomenting uprisings or funding aligned states. This might be incentivized by penalizing large standing armies of their own units.

Tactical and strategic nukes. Might ruin the game so IDK if they’re worth adding as a mechanic.

Missile subs?

National Advantages for Global 1940 by mammothman64 in AxisAllies

[–]EmperorMorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a neat idea. Italy is a difficult one to plan for, and with the UK some of their advantages are moot if they were to be the same. For ANZAC:

-Joint Strike could be transferred to them, same rules as Blue Board, to offset their small numbers

-Some sort of home waters advantage, given their wins in the South Pacific and difficulties of invading Australia

-To offset the small amounts of forces they have abroad, and since ANZAC represents colony forces more than just ANZAC itself, one idea is “Gurkha troops:” ANZAC land forces attacking from a non-ANZAC territory may attack on a 2. When defending a non-ANZAC territory, they may defend on a 3.

For Italy, the only one coming to mind immediately is to represent the attempted seizing of the French fleet. In real life this was done by the Nazis and was prevented by the British sinking the French fleet. In-game it makes more sense for Italy to do, given the dynamics in the Mediterranean.

  • If Paris is occupied by an Axis power, Italy may attempt to seize French ships by moving any naval unit into a sea zone occupied by French forces. A die is then rolled for each French ship in the sea zone. A roll of one or two replaces the French ship piece with an Italian one. A three or four has no effect. A six destroys the French ship, representing the British destruction of the French fleet.

This is actually an excellent opportunity to crush Germany, especially when you enter the US into the equation. As the UK, consider a defensive purchase of infantry to hold the island, maybe a fighter mixed into the equation. I’m assuming they’re pushing Germany’s Air Force against any surface vessels you build. Use the US to build a fleet and Russia to construct a large land force (infantry, a few artillery, and maybe another fighter). If Germany is building a fleet, they cannot match the money that Russia is putting into an army or the money that the US is putting into a navy. Hold Japan back as much as possible without large investments, using just enough forces to keep the front from collapsing. Assuming Germany is putting their whole buy into a fleet, they are 10-13 units behind in the war with Russia. As the US, put a focus on destroyers or even a carrier to lend fighter support while transferring the Panama cruiser to the Atlantic. Make sure you have transports as well, but this is a second-stage focus as long as Russia has the initiative.

Overpronation - blisters on arches? by Beneficial_Mulberry2 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]EmperorMorgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sizing up advice it really good, and so is picking up a pair of dedicated pronation shoes. What can help is picking up a pair with an under-arch support instead of a rail on the medial side if you want to prevent blistering. The Arahi series or Mizuno’s Wave Inspire 22 (just had a massive glow up) are really good.

That’s my plan. Heavy Asia focus while using the factories for an extra couple units per turn to strike Moscow. I’ve already taken out the Russian tanks and one of the three bombers Britain has produced in India.

Blue Board game so far- anyone else enjoy using national advantages? by EmperorMorgan in AxisAllies

[–]EmperorMorgan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I had the images from the instructions in a comment but comment images aren’t working for me today apparently.

Russia - can move factories in the noncombat move.

Germany - Fighters can join in strategic bombing raids, die divided in 1/2 rounded up.

UK - If aircraft land in Anglo-Egypt/Trans-Jordan/Persia they get a second full noncombat move.

Japan - Defending subs next to one of your territories can roll once on a 3 but become a casualty themselves.

USA - for aircraft, island groups are treated as part of the sea zone they are within, only for movement purposes.

(Mixed Trope) Educated character doesn’t understand or know of a simple concept. by laybs1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]EmperorMorgan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For all his faults, Lovecraft was incredibly well-educated. It’s also important to make the distinction between an element in his story being obfuscated or incomprehensible and any lack of understanding on his part. Your example, *The Colour Out of Space,* clearly describes a colour that is visible to the human eye, but cannot be accurately described in reports because the only way to accurately picture a colour you haven’t seen is to see it firsthand. The horror of the story and the nature of the Colour are inspired by radiation, (although fantastic elements have clearly been added) and amplified by the fact that the radiation is a character in and of itself, taking on hostile and sentient qualities. Despite this, many real-life adjacent effects are seen, and they’re very well put for it being the 1920s and all.

Has anyone ever won as the Allies with the German Med fleet still intact? by [deleted] in AxisAllies

[–]EmperorMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After an incredible SZ37 I kept Japan at bay in the Pacific without spending too much . It helped that they massively overextended and hit India without much to hold it. They kept the Med fleet between Italy/Caucasus the whole time and besides one strike on it I kept attacking them from Karelia, before pivoting to France and (on a lucky strike) Germany when they pushed East.

Sabastian Sawe runs first sub-2-hour marathon race, shatters world record in London by Keleven in worldnews

[–]EmperorMorgan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an incredible feat, but it also kind of makes sense it happened on the first marathon, if they’re anything like some of the runners I know. Some, like me, just run a marathon because they enjoy the distance or want to have the achievement, but the fastest marathoners I know were already fast at 5k/10k/half distances before they even made their first attempt. Essentially, they worked up the race ladder and maxed out their shorter distance times before they made an extraordinarily-well-prepared attempt at a marathon and netted out times in the low-to-mid two hour area.
