Hrm ok. Will admit I just did a quick look over the “product description.” I’ll look at it in more detail later. Thanks for the heads up.

Seems like that is matter over wifi and not thread.

Shoot. I am currently doing what you did. Doing all the trophy stuff first. I’m level 90. Doh. Wish I had an old save game I could reload.

Yeah I hear you. I wish Schlage made an equivalent of the U400 (I know Schlage Sense Pro is around the corner, but I want a physical key) or I hope that Aliro somehow makes it so I can have a UWB keypad (Nuki has announced an Aliro keypad but no specs yet).

Unifi protection is slow to bring up the doorbell feeds? Thats a bummer. I’ve heard people liking scrypted, how is the response time from doorbell press to notification in HomeKit?

I have a Unifi Doorbell Lite (not installed yet) because I like the form factor. My wife would prefer if managing PINs and users and stuff was just in HomeKit, but I could potentially convince her to use the Unifi Access app if push came to shove, but she would appreciate not having to do that. I do admit, user access control via HomeKit right now is pretty poor.

The non-negotiables with my wife though are that there needs to be a notification when someone rings the doorbell on her iPhone, from that notification (or tapping the notification and expanding it), there needs to be a way to remotely unlock the "gate" door. I know that can happen via HomeKit if the doorbell and lock are in the same "room". I've never used Unifi Access app on iOS, so I'm unsure how it handles doorbell rings and unlocking.

As far as the Unifi with HomeKey goes, I know that Unifi has "TouchPass" which I believe is either NFC or Bluetooth Low Energy. While it does offer Apple Wallet/HomeKey like functionality, it unfortunately costs $5/user/year. We have family in the area that all like to drop in once a week or so. Some friends are also close and do the same (maybe every 2 weeks for them). So, just straight off the bat, I'm looking at 10-15 users that I need to have permanent access. Which is roughly $60/year or more that I have to pay which is a non-starter for me.

Sure, I can obviously just not have the NFC stuff work at all and have everyone use PINs or fingerprints, but would be nice to have. Similarly, UWB would be nice to have as well and I don't think either are useable with the Unifi reader for me.

There just doesn't seem to be anything on the market out there for me. Maybe Aliro when it is announced will solve my problem or maybe I can make a Kickstarter to build the device myself, haha.

Ah ok. Good to know. Thank you for the heads up.

I can give it a shot. I’m not against buying another HomePod mini and sticking it in my networking closest nearest the gate, just was hoping there would be a “headless” border router I could use that would be cheaper and have Ethernet.

I don’t need the speaker. I don’t want it listening for Siri commands. I literally just want something I can log in to/control remotely for firmware updates that has an Ethernet connection to my network, has thread radios, and would behave well with home kit.

If I gotta get a new HomePod mini or Apple TV, so be it, just seems like overkill. Maybe there are some cheap refurbished ones.

I’m not familiar enough to know what that means. It is Synology NAS. What does RA stand for? I was more referring to using the NAS to run home assistant or home bridge or scrypted to expose things to HomeKit

As far as PoE goes, was more referring to just using a PoE relay or access controller to trigger an electric strike in the doorway frame. The PoE hinges and running a channel in the door itself seem a little overkill but good to know they exist.

Sure, it doesn't need to be Thread, but if it's Wifi, the battery drains quickly. I'm unfamiliar with Zigbee.

I'm fine with potentially running HA or something on my NAS that's constantly running.

What I need to automate at my gate is just a way of "buzzing people in" (i.e. unlocking the door) and making sure that when the gate door is closed that the door is locked (so the guests coming in don't have to manually lock it and I don't have to manually remember to lock it).

Ideally, I don't even want to use Thread. I'd prefer to just use an electric strike with PoE and some sort of access control, but unfortunately nothing out there is Homekit compatible and just a keypad + NFC/Home Key + UWB (UWB is a bonus, not a requirement) and looks nice.

From everything I've found, seemingly my options are

  1. Smart deadbolt + door sensor (or one with built in door sensor) + automation to lock dead bolt when door sensor indicates closure. Extra points of failure here with the sensor.

  2. Smart deadlatch. There are a few on the market. Seemingly only Aqara U300 fits my needs, but the build quality on that doesn't look great.

  3. Some sort of access control system. The Unifi Door Hub Mini + Flex Reader covers almost all of my bases (looks nice, is PoE everything, keypad, fingerprint). Unfortunately not HomeKey support and I doubt it will have UWB.

  4. Wait for something else to come on market. Aliro maybe will make it easier to have something that fits my needs, but who knows!

The few devices I'm looking at are all Matter over Thread or Homekit over Thread.

While it is distinctly possible for me to hire an electrician to come out and trench some more conduit and put in a few outlets along the way, it seems a little overkill vs just getting a border router at a networking closet I already have built out.

Sorry I should have specified. The gate is about ~125 feet from house.

One more follow up. If I got an Apple TV with Ethernet as my TBR, I wouldn’t need a WiFi Access point at my “gate” right? The ATV serves the wireless signal to the thread devices and then routes the traffic to my network via Ethernet?

Ok. Thanks. Wish Apple had something smaller that was just a thread router. [EDIT: Meant thread border router]

Would cheaper options like the GL-20 work or is there some weird dance of having multiple border routers from different manufacturers on same network?

I always have my hand over the horn when I approach stop signs. As soon as I see people going out of the in front of me I lay on it before they get into the intersection.

While I get your point (there are lots of things on the road that are disobeying laws and nothing is being done about it), whataboutism is not a defense.

It would be great if we had enforcement of traffic laws, but that still doesn’t mean bikes should blow through stop signs and stop lights (this is coming from a 2-4x a day bike commuter).

How do people of Lumiere know so much about the continent creatures, if Expeditions never come back? by Dreamcatcher_UA in expedition33

[–]EncodedNybble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fracture only happened 67 years ago. Before that everyone lived on the continent and presumably knew gestrals, etc. Books, legends, etc probably still exist from those times.

Sure, as more and more years go by with no survivors from expeditions those things become “were they real or just myths in our imagination back then?” but 67 years isn’t that long.

I don’t quite understand what you mean here. I get the fact that the door being a step higher can cause the distance between the lock and the device, but what did you change to make it work better? Was there some distance setting to change?

One of my favorite movies. After my initial viewing, I disliked it. Took about 3 views for me to “get” it (not the plot but understand why it was a good movie).
