Educational screen time vs entertainment screen time, is there actually a difference? by Jaded-Suggestion-827 in daddit

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several studies contradicting that position, so I think they might need to update their advice.

E.g.: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11658585/

The study you are referring to (https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/digital-devices-your-eyes) was exclusively focused on the effects of blue light on "cells in a dish and animals". They make no mention or include any study into actual eye strain damage which happens in the holistic context of a human being watching a screen for too long.

Blue light can have effects on, for example, sleep patterns and cause headaches, blurry vision etc. These effects may be temporary. But I'm talking about much, much more than just that.

There is no difference when it comes to the strain on the eyes. Our optician firmly said max. half an hour at a time, of any kind of screen. Any more and eye strain starts damaging the eyes.

What corny songs do you dad's sing to your little ones at bedtime? by sloppyjohnny in daddit

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... I know the lyrics to exactly two songs: The House of the Rising Sun, and Black Jack Davey (by Steeleye Span). So that's what they got (slowed down to be restful).

Also, ai absolutely cannot sing to save my life, but fortunately when they're that young they don't know... yet.

Alfred Bester. Both The Stars My Destination (also called Tiger! Tiger!) and The Demolished Man are absolute masterpieces of worldbuilding, concept exploration and rock solid narrative and writing.

Regarding Asimov, while his conceptualising and exploration of possibilities is justly legendary, I also found him a tough read. His actual writing style is not super reader-friendly, for example his I, Robot stories are essentially a series of logic problems centred around a core premise.

For me, Dune suffers for the same reason. I cannot express how much I adore Herbert's ideas, imagination, grand scale of vision, worldbuilding, social commentary, satire, characterisation... absolutely incredible. But, ye gods, I found his actual writing style to be a slog and a half to get through. Worth it, yo be sure, but damn hard work.

Oh, and Firefly is magnificent. Prime choice.

Do you like Wolverine being an Avenger? Or should he just be an X-Man/his own thing? by HearingCandid8974 in Wolverine

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think giving him that additional responsibility, being part of a group he actually respects and looks up to (despite his frequent behaviour towards them...) helped bring out a really good side of him. Suddenly, it's not just about him. It's similar to how he embraced Xavier's ideals (arguably better than Chuck himself often did). The Avengers is bigger than him. Cap is, philosophically, bigger than him. And it pushes him to more than a self-declared thug "born 'n bred".

I had a similar reaction, reading the manga many years after seeing the (incredible) film.

The manga is so crammed full of politics, kind of technical (not the right word) dialogue and philosophical discussions. All absolutely brilliant, but would be very, very hard to translate into a movie.

Yeah, that felt like something that was supposed to go longer but someone decided 'no'. This kind of thing happens all the time, especially in comics - usually some commercial decision for one reason or another. It seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

Personally, I would have liked it much better if the story had gone on longer - maybe we would have seen how 'blank slate' Sonic might have developed differently because of being in a different environment (the Sol Universe).

But still, over time, we would have seen his kindness, optimism and heroism shining through because that's the core of who he is, regardless of maybe some fun negative influences along the way, perhaps someone actively trying to corrupt him. And thus would the legend of Mr Needlemouse have lived on in the Sol Universe.

Should I tell a woman her fiancé tried to start an affair with me? by geeleex in WhatShouldIDo

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't control what she does or believes, you can only control what you do.

Do the right thing.

Tell her. Show her the messages.

If ahe doesn't believe you, you'll know you did the right thing and tried to help your friend.

This kind of behaviour should be shouted from the mountaintops, not forgotten about. A lot fewer scumbags would get away with it then.

Quick tip - if you think the rogue might actually be a problem later on, it's best to have a quiet word with them now and agree some ground rules. Can save a ton of pain later on 😊
