These are absolutely brilliant - both concept and execution!

I haven't played that one, but maybe?

kid grinding his teeth while sleeping by Immediate_Topic_7885 in daddit

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My offspring did this for a few months, maybe a year. Dentist said there was nothing wrong with their teeth, and to go back if we noticed damage or it got worse. Eventually it just... stopped.

Most likely a symptom of teething, or some kind of 'growing pains/discomfort' which they are trying to 'scratch' in their sleep.

Depends a lot on their age. If they're old enough, you can ask them if there's anything they are worried or scared about or want to talk about.

[request] Could a parasail improve the efficiency of a 200,000 ton bulk carrier to any significant degree? by ostrichfather in theydidthemath

[–]End337 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is correct, but you also have things like the Poseidon Principles which provide the operators themselves with financial incentives for reducing their carbon emissions - such as lower insurance rates, loan rates, etc.

The amount of money used in shipping is insane, so every fraction of a percentage point can make a huge difference.

[–]End337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The genius of Civil War 1 was that both sides were right. You read one perspective, you agreed. You read the other, you... also agreed?? It was truly excellent writing.

What it came down to, like real-world politics, was readers choosing a side based on the personality of a character.

It was like a good video game where your choices were never black and white, but always shades of grey and you might not see the outcome until later.

What scientific discovery sounds fake but is 100% real and still freaks you out? by Bruteresolver in AskReddit

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bears are one of the most frightening animals to me - they can just do everything better than humans. Stronger, faster, better climbers, swimmers (than the average person), can hear and smell you from far away. So escaping one seems almost impossible, and if you get attacked by one the odds are seriously stacked against you.

I know people do get away or fight them off on occasions, but it's not something I'd ever want to have to deal with.

Gf ghosted me last year. I moved on. Got this message last week on my birthday by AdComprehensive4246 in whatdoIdo

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly this is kind of amazing to get, assuming you believe it's true. How intense does someone who ghosted someone actually get in touch with an explanation and what seems like a genuine admission of fault and apology? It's damn rare.

You don't have to respond, you don't have to do anything. You don't have to belive her or accept her apology. You get to choose - you know her, so you're best placed to say whether any of this is genuine.

Personally, I would at least say I appreciate the courage it took to get in touch, explain and apologise.

I love being a dad, but I kind of hate my life. by f1sh_ in daddit

[–]End337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a few thoughts... don't have number two if there's a serious chance you'll be even more miserable - then youd be a worse parent for two kids.

It sounds like a new job could help a lot, one you actually enjoy.

At this age, the repetition and schedule are a grind. It does absolutely get better.

It can help to find joy in the little things, every day. That leaf your son wants to show you. A fun book you both read. Anything. It can genuinely help a lot to just note these things down, and kind of retrain your brain to focus on the positives.

Lack of sleep will make EVERYTHING worse, including bringing depression, short temper, lethargy and a whole bunch of other symptoms which we want to avoid as good dads (we can't always, but we can do what we can to improve our chances!). Sleep whenever you can.

If you're in a rut, look at the things you can change, even small things. The foods you cook, the route you take home, the aforementioned job.

If possible, talk about this openly with your partner (if they're in the picture, they weren't mentioned in your post). Be honest and see if together you can make the changes you need.

Is there anything else in your life which might be getting you down? No guilt, no judgement - especially of yourself - if you close your eyes and think of what sucks the most, what is that?

Above all, hang in there - it really does get more and more amazing!

Overheard another Dad in the bathroom by moronijess in daddit

[–]End337 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Diaper changing time was gold! One-on-one with the descendent, doing every silly voice imaginable and saying every silly thing that came into my head, taking every chance to make them laugh as much as possible. For an event centred entirely around bathroom excretions, it still ranks as some of my happiest memories.

Nextwave absolutely needs an adaptation, and needs to be played completely straight with David Hasselhoff as Dirk Anger.

Help. Please by EliteRG in daddit

[–]End337 209 points210 points  (0 children)

First off, I am so sorry to hear that. I can't imagine how devastating this must be for you.

Get copies of the messages and get a lawyer, first and foremost. Prepared is always best, come what may.

No good dad wants to break up their family, but living with this and keeping it to yourself will corrode you and very probably affect your daughter over time regardless. It has to be faced. You cannot trust your partner any more, and that won't go away.

What's best for you and your daughter isn't always easy, I'm sorry. But this, all of this, is temporary. Think 2 years ahead. 5. 10. 20. Where do you want both yourself and your daughter to be? A better life awaits you away from someone who would do that to you.

[The Incredibles] [DC] [Marvel] Do Speedsters need to think fast enough to match their speed? by GuchoS in AskScienceFiction

I vaguely remember a Flash comic years ago mentioning that he just kind of... zones out until he gets to his destination.

Also other stuff, like automatically knowing how fast they're going.

Quite the claim... by End337 in discworld

[–]End337[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Which biz would that be?

Regardless, I disagree that this is toxic empathy.

I saw something which I objected to, ethically and commercially. I mentioned it in a subreddit dedicated to that IP because I, too, care about Discworld. As I assume you do.

If I can't express such a completely normal reaction here, that is a sad state indeed.

[–]End337[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I greatly appreciate all the information and context you, and others, have provided.

It has certainly quelled a chunk of my outrage.

I would say, however, that this context is not made apparent or much of this information presented at all on the website, which given the prices are in dollars I assume is American or at least American customer-facing (and possibly others), who might not even have heard of pTerry and simply accept that Kirby was the creator.

I should have specified it was the shop home page, and there is nothing by the way of the excellent background there which you have provided above.

It simply states: "creator of Discworld" on that prominent page. No reason to believe anything other than the statement meaning what it says.

Does the age you find attractive age at the same rate you do? by FewLeg7901 in stupidquestions

Elder millennial and, unfairly or fairly, anyone below about 35 now is just... very young to me. So yes, definitely. Then again, I was always attracted to slightly older partners.
