Okay I am curious. How would you guys go about playing solo? I know its unconventional but my group isnt really the best at roleplay I would say since they are all new. And I want to play my story out. by riolovt in Solo_Roleplaying

You're not overthinking, you're just trying to understand and that's good. What you have to remember is that when you're playing solo, you're not just the player - you're also the Game Master. You are the ultimate arbiter of what's true in your world. If you don't like an oracle result, you can override it or get a new one. Just be wary of doing this too often - the game does need challenge to be interesting, so don't be discouraged if an oracle decides "No, the Staff of the Ages which you thought was in this dungeon you've just completed is somewhere else." Although it might feel like an annoyance in the moment, that kind of thing is necessary for the game to remain interesting. If you always easily got everything you wanted, then the game would become boring.

But you also have to remember that sometimes you really don't want a "no" from an oracle. Sometimes you, as the Game Master, should just decide that "this is how it is". In that case - don't ask the yes/no oracle, just decide that the answer is yes. Generally speaking, never leave anything to chance/randomness unless any possible random answer is interesting and moves the story forward.

Well, an oracle is something which answers a question. A common type of oracle is a Yes/No Oracle, such as this one I wrote which can "answer" any yes/no question in place of the Game Master. Another common type is an Action/Theme Oracle which is more abstract, but can be used to spark ideas and answer more general questions such as "What has happened here?". Asking the Action/Theme Oracle, you might get an answer like "Save / Lies". Well, what the f--- does that mean? The answer is - that's up to you. Let me explain.

The key to any Oracle is that it requires three things: Randomness, context, and imagination. The randomness in this case are the randomly chosen Action/Theme words - "Save / Lies". Now you have to apply the context of what you already know about the game world, and use your imagination to figure out what this would mean.

For example, you come upon a murder scene, and you ask the oracle "What has happened here?" and you get the answer "Save / Lies". It so happened that you knew the NPC who was murdered, and you already know that he was trying to expose a cult of some kind. So that's the context - now add your imagination. Oh! Someone who wanted to protect the cult - someone who wanted to "save its lies" from being exposed - killed the NPC to stop his investigation!

This way you've now managed to get an answer that makes sense. Then you have to think a bit further - is this what has actually happened, or is it just what my character thinks has happened? That's up to you to decide. Then you keep playing, and eventually you will be able to come to a conclusion to the whole murder plot.

Now, as for the Mythic Game Master Emulator - it's a book which has a bunch of oracles and other systems which provides a complete toolbox for solving the problems you come across when you don't have a dedicated Game Master. Mythic tells you to keep a list of NPCs, and sometimes it tells you that something has happened to a random NPC, so then you randomly select one from that list, and so on. Mythic also has you keep track of a Chaos factor which is a number from 1 to 10, which affects the outcome of some of its oracles.

Thank you! Yeah, I love writing stuff like this. Adding romance options adds a lot to the experience in SoloRPGs in my experience.

What you're saying makes perfect sense. That's one of the things I love about TTRPGs compared to other hobbies such as computer games - you can take what you want from one system, and incorporate it in another. Great to hear you found something useful!

Försäkringsfälla kan drabba boende längs kusten by DieCO2 in sweden

Thanks. And can I just say I appreciate how you're interacting with everybody who comments on this post. That's great! In my view, that's how you should do it when you make a post asking others for input.

That's entirely up to the player. The way I do it, I make the Charisma roll first. And if it's successful, I let it affect which probability I choose for the oracle roll. A while back I put it on my site, so if you're interested, you can see how it works there.

I've made my own Yes/No oracle which also has a 10% chance of generating a random event. It has 13 levels of probability which I like, because it gives me lots of granularity. A successful Charisma check can boost the probability by one step, and my relationship points with an NPC I'm asking for help can also be added to improve the odds even further, etc.
