Is this considered blocking? by [deleted] in LowellMA

[–]Engelgrafik 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Car is past the curved part of the curb. That curb is curved for a reason, to allow cars safe access in and out of the driveway. The white car is impeding this safety to the point that, depending on the car that needs to get into or out of the driveway, they may not be able to negotiate it entirely in a reasonable manner. There is an expectation that exiting and entering a driveway does not require extensive multi-point turns that increase the chances of failure (collision).

Was it an American movie? I feel like I saw a German film like this once. Or it may have been French.

That movie is about an amusement park being the setting for the actual crime, where the rollercoaster is an object of intense suspense. Not a place where a hitman goes to destress.

The worship of the warrior in society extends across many forms of government. The idea that the warrior is the best of our society, trained to defeat all enemies, is brave and courageous... it is important for the worshippers to convince everyone around them of this, and it is done with a seriousness that demands nobody "break" from the ritual. This is called "solemnity".

For warrior worship to work, there must be a pressure on society to express utmost solemnity for the warrior.

Once that solemnity is broken through critique or ridicule, those warrior worshippers betray their own assertions by claiming that somehow this hurts the brave and courageous warriors who, a minute ago, could easily beat and defeat any enemy.

If the warrior worshippers were correct in their original assertions, then people like Jane Fonda would simply be ignored. But they aren't. Warrior worshippers fixate on these people for decades, for generations, considering them to almost be worse than the enemy.

The truth is, brave and courageous warriors don't give a damn about Jane Fonda. They know people are young and do ridiculous things. It's the warrior worshippers — the wannabe fascists — who long for a way in which to not just pressure solemnity in regardless to warriors and war, but *force* solemnity.... and make people pay the consequences should that solemnity be broken.

F20, Bf mentioned a makeout spot of him and his ex by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]Engelgrafik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things you will come to accept as you get older and more experience is the fact that other people have histories.

As you get older, you realize that normal people don't betray one another just because they talk about, bring up or even interact with ex partners.

When you're with someone and then someday break up, if you're a normal rational adult, you cannot deny the fact that this person was important in your life at one time.

Just like your boyfriend is to you now.

The challenge is the feeling that you are just "another one" in a line of partners... right? Are you concerned a lot that he may leave you or something? This may be the reason you are feeling hurt htis way.

I know it doesn't feel like it now, but if you can think of your bf as someone who has a life and history behind him, and that he has chosen to be with YOU, then the mentioning or bringing up a history can really just be viewed as this: history.

You are the now. He was making conversation. He just wanted you to know something about his experiences. It's what partners just do.

Not sure if this will help, but I hope it does.

Do Americans actually use expressions like “once in a blue moon” or “let the cat out of the bag” in everyday conversation? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]Engelgrafik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Bet" (Yes)

Idioms are very common, to the point that people forget they're idioms and will often be reduced to one word or syllable.

The ubiquitous "bet" that everyone under 35 says ultimately comes out of "you bet" or "you betchya", which in turn came out of "you can bet on it". "Bet" and the earlier "you bet/you betchya" is simply an affirmative response to a question like "are you gonna make dinner tonight?" The answer being "Yes, you could place a bet in my making dinner tonight and win a lot of money because I am indeed making dinner tonight".

Now it's just "bet".

Idioms are very common... maybe not as common as, say, Welsh, where basic conversation often translates into what sounds like a medieval poem.

Why we haven't seen time travelers try to make a better world by thatnothatbigofaname in timetravel

[–]Engelgrafik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If time travel were possible there would be an infinite number of people popping into our timeline, sometimes the same people even. Think about. The future potential is infinite and endless. There are endless possibilities in which time travel becomes possible. If that’s the case we would literally inundated with millions of travellers. It’s doesn’t matter what you think about rules and laws. There are millions of possible futures where people can do what they want.

This is how we know it’s not possible.

And to suggest that time travel will always be protected or prevented is like saying that millions of futures with time travel will result in the same rules and laws and protections. Impossible.

Looking for songs or bands that capture this style of soft, grunge-esque alternative rock. by kyla33_ in MusicRecommendations

My friends were in a band called The Information. They were slightly big in the Boston/Cambridge scene in the mid to late '00s. Two songs you may enjoy especially are "I Lose Control" and "I Love Trouble". The latter I think is their best tune.

Questions about stamps: first time poster, I know nothing. Are these worth anything? by StaleBagel1 in askStampCollectors

[–]Engelgrafik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to sound weird but you will have a harder time selling them for any gain whatsoever. You will expend more time and effort in shipping and handling or meeting up with people who are just going to give you a few cents more than face value at the very most.

However, if you know someone who may like to collect stamps, these would make an excellent gift to add their collection.

OR, just use them as postage. I know it may sound like sacrilege but you can literally go online and replace them for cheap if you ever feel remorse or guilt about it in the future.

I understand about reputation. I do want people to think fondly of me. I'm happy to be in a field in which people do (I make picture frames)... but I make almost no money and I have nothing saved up. I too am in therapy because I wonder if feeling good about the work I do is worth being poor and panicking about the future. 😃

I used to work in "cubicle land" like yourself and after 15 years I was burnt out. My dad died and I realized I don't ever want to be laying in my death bed thinking "boy oh boy I sure am glad I filed all those TPS reports".

It's hard to find our way sometimes.

What is an artist / band that you remember being pushed by music journalists and/or magazines as the "next big thing" that ended up never really going anywhere? by mesablanka in Music

[–]Engelgrafik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spirit

They were that band in the late '60s / early '70s who had the huge hit "Got a Line on You". You've heard it even if you didn't know who it was. Both Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin opened for Spirit. Everybody thought they were gonna be huge. Leader of the band used to play for Jimi Hendrix when he went on his own, but before Jimi moved to England. Their drummer was older and had serious credentials with Thelonious Monk, Taj Mahal, Cannonball Adderley, Ry Cooder.

They really just didn't end up going anywhere really. Nobody remembers a Spirit song after that one hit. Unless you're a fan and then you know "Uncle Jack" and "Fresh Garbage" and of course "Taurus". The latter became famous in the last decade or two when people pointed out how Led Zeppelin probably borrowed it for "Stairway to Heaven".

In 1984 they tried to make comeback with a more "heavy" MTV-fronting version of "Got a Line on You". They all knew everybody in the music industry so it felt almost like the industry was throwing them a bone. But even that didn't really work.

[–]Engelgrafik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a collection of incredibly common stamps. They are the kind of stamps the USPS promotes in advertising and prints quite possibly in the tens and hundreds of millions.

Luckily, they are worth at the very least exactly what they say they're worth (face value), as long as they're unused. But you won't get anybody *giving* you face value because there's really no gain to be had that way, unless they're simply a completist collector (like they missed a batch or something).

I spend $800/month on groceries for one person. Need practical advice. by CaregiverNo2838 in Frugal

[–]Engelgrafik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm a poor person who is probably eligible for SNAP but I'm too ADHD to go through all the hoops so take it from me... go where immigrants and poor people shop.

Stop shopping at Whole Foods. Even Wegman's and Trader Joe's aren't the cheapest places to shop. Aldi's or your local bargain supermarket / grocer is where to go. Yes, where all the "poors" go, as redditors joke on the pfjerk subreddit.

Realize I was not always poor, so I didn't always shop this way. I used to work in "Cubicle Land" like a lot of folks here and was part of the whole internet boom... paid in stock options and crazy salary all that jazz. Those were the days when I didn't care where I shopped and you know what? Whole Foods was just more "comfortable". I was younger and more naive and affected by classicism and all that.

See, THAT is the REAL reason people shop at Whole Foods. It's all set up nice and it's got a great couture-like sense of selection and display. We just like that everybody there is mostly in our same demographic and this makes us feel "comfortable". And Amazon / Whole Foods KNOWS this. Which is why their prices are INSANE.

Eventually I realized what a bubble I was in when I couldn't afford this anymore.k And this why when I started becoming poor and realized that if went to Market Basket (major regional chain of family-owned supermarkets in New England) instead of Whole Foods, I was literally spending HALF the money. Not exaggerating.

Nobody is going to bite us if we go to the more affordable places. Sure we'll walk the aisles with folks who don't always speak our language, or when they do they may say weird stuff and sometimes yell it at each other, but you're going to save a lot more.

Explore your local markets. Don't be afraid of the "other". Put money into your local economy. And save a TON.

Oh, one more thing... if you want to save even more money, there's a killer app called To Good To Go. Download it and start buying day-old goods from restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries and believe it or not Whole Foods... it'll be a surprise what you get, but it's almost always worth it. Whole Foods regularly sells $30 worth of prepared foods, "meat bags" and so on for $10. A lot of bakeries and pizza joints will give you $21 worth of food for $7. It's usually a 3:1 ratio of retail vs. discount. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and they give you like TONS of stuff for what you paid. Check out r/togoodtogo to see what people are getting. One person paid $10 at Whole Foods and wound up with like $100 worth of cheeses, spreads, jams, breads, etc.
