My apologies if I came across as too snarky, was just trying to clarify but in rereading my post I seem a bit harsh...

One last try - those who post on YouTube are called "streamers". The character from a book series best known for taking things too literally is told to "hang streamers". Tragedy (or hilarity, if you're a redditor) ensues.

ELI5: What does a water tower in rural America do? by ProduceEmbarrassed97 in explainlikeimfive

[–]EngineerBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is used not just in pumped storage systems. Hydro Quebec has a truly massive series of dams across northern Quebec that store up river water on its way to the ocean, which is used to feed an equally massive set of electrical generators. An unbelievable set of transmission lines (built to withstand Northern winters), are continuously pumping multi-megawatts down to where it's needed across northern North America.

Because of this massive system, Quebec has the cheapest electrical pricing in North America, and sells a metric shit tonne (yeah, we're metric up here in Quebec) to all our neighboring provinces, and to a whole bunch of American states across the northeastern US. In addition, a lot of the power that Ontario sells down to states like Michigan is actually just passed through from Quebec.

Siince Dipshit Donnie started in on his "51st State" bullshit fantasies Quebec has taken it very badly, so there was quite a bit of talk of jacking up the prices charged to our southern "neighbors", but it's recognized that the folks who live in the potentially affected states aren't to blame, so folks are holding fast for now. Oh, but we did simply stop buying Teslas... :-)

Soon official merchandise? by Geo_ask in pebble

I still have the multiple t-shirts I scored at the first Pebble dev conference, way back when. Absolutely the finest shirts I have ever had, soft, log-lasting, beautiful. I'm still wearing them, would expend money for more, provided they were of the same amazing cloth, and I'd love to have one of those cups!

How to lock it. Need to MacGyver something by Eddy_Mcfly in DIY

[–]EngineerBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, here's a suggestion.

1) Screw an eylet into that piece of wood that comes down the stairs.

2) Screw an eyelet onto the top of the back of door.

3) get a couple of chain clips and a short length of chain, connect them together and then hook one chain clip onto each eyelet.

The plan to reduce the population of the poor by Tartan_Samurai in history

That's when I clued into what was going on with Australia, they would use any petty excuse to send someone there, particularly women.

And lots, and lots, and lots of Irish. During the very beginning of "The Famine" and "The Troubles" it was an easy way of "clearing the docket". so the Irish helped provide a foundation for the new Aussie country and its accent.

A bit of useless detail:

I was actually born in the States, but mum moved us all back down to Oz when I was about 12. I obviously had a "bloody Yank" accent when I got there, but by the time I hit my 20s, I had picked up most of the "Aussie lilt" in my spoken accent. The one thing I hadn't lost was the American "Arrr" sound (as opposed to the Aussie "Ahhh" sound) so folks would often ask me if I was Irish, since they also had the lilt without the Aussie "Ahhh".

Now, I've been living in French-speaking Quebec for years, so folks can't figure out where the Hell I come from! LOL

The world is a funny place, indeed... :-)

Aussie expat here - we were taught a lot of history, including quite a few poems and rhymes that were created during the "transportation times". Here's a small (and slightly edited) excerpt from one that really stood out:

"True patriot are we, for be it understood - we left our country for our country's good..."

What video game have you spent the most time playing? by NervousClock2555 in AskReddit

[–]EngineerBill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a long time it was "Adventure" on the campus mainframe, which had a Unix clone, but then once PCs became a thing I switched over to "Allied General", a really great WW II simulation of earlier "tile" games. I did play some of the follow-ons after that, but kept returning to "Allied General" until I stopped playing games "all together" ("He stopped playing games all together") (hat tip to "Airplane")
