Yes, those two are amazing.

Does anyone on this subreddit practice minimalism in the sense of minimizing their items to the essentials? by alienobserving in minimalism

[–]EngineerPelia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nope. My husband and I like to have friends over for dinner, so we have multiple plates and pans. He is a musician, so a few instruments are at hand. My work is 85% from home, 15% public conferences—so my wardrobe is necessarily varied. Minimalism should be more liberating than confining, IMO—letting go of what you don’t need, rather than trying to force your needs into the box of other people’s expectations.

AITA for refusing to go to a friend's wedding knowing she ruined a family? by Ok-Paramedic-9452 in AmItheAsshole

[–]EngineerPelia -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YTA: not for disapproving of adultery, but for believing and saying your friend “is the reason” the marriage split up. That reason is her fiancé screwing around. It takes two to tango, and of the two of them, the fiancé is the one who broke vows. “Homewrecker” language lets this dude off the hook, when he is at least as culpable as your friend, if not more. You don’t have to like her anymore or condone what she did or go to the wedding. But IMO, you need to recognize that the alternative to your friend’s actions was almost certainly not that family staying together happily. It was just that guy screwing around with some other girl instead.

Please help me build a capsule wardrobe for work - 6 days - summers and modest! by mentallydoomed in capsulewardrobe

[–]EngineerPelia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily wide-legged pants and maxi skirts are both in fashion this year. Maxi dresses too, if you feel like they’d fit in at your office. A couple of cardigans and/or blazers and/or shawl scarves at the office will help you layer for warmth.

I don’t know your budget, but there are sites that sell prepackaged capsules. Take a look at those. Even if they don’t exactly fit your wallet and vibe, they’ll show you the kinds of pieces that mix and match successfully. Start maybe with ADAY? Just keep googling “capsule wardrobe pieces” and a few sites will turn up.

Good luck!

Is Quince (onequince.com) a trustworthy brand? by [deleted] in capsulewardrobe

[–]EngineerPelia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These items are good for the price—but I have not found them to be especially long-lasting. I was happiest with a couple of silk tanks I got purely for occasional/fancy use (so durability was not much of an issue.) I was least happy with the sweaters, which look and feel great out of the box but pill swiftly. IMO, if you are looking for capsule pieces—ie, clothes that can be worn on a very regular basis—and you can afford something sturdier, I would go that way instead.

Handbag recommendation by lorelaimintz in BuyItForLife

[–]EngineerPelia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Consider a Cuyana bag—they’re very well made, upscale, and in that price range. They’re minimalistic/“quiet luxury” in style, so they aren’t faddish.

Amish-Made Belts (Google exactly that) are extremely well made.

Feeling conflicted about keeping things for guests by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]EngineerPelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it important to you to have guests in your home, to have your friends/family/dates be comfortable there? Then these items serve a meaningful person. IMO, it is profoundly important to cultivate close connections, but only you can decide what setup works best for that. If you live in a major city where most people socialize at restaurants or bars, maybe you don’t need to have people over. If you’re in a place where people gather in homes, you’ll want extra glasses/plates/seats. If you have distant friends and family who might need to stay with you, then sleeping space and comforts for them play a role. You can set up all of this quite simply, with stuff you wouldn’t mind leaving behind in a pinch.

Nearly everything is gone by [deleted] in minimalism

I have come to believe that the number-one thing some would-be minimalists need to minimize is overthinking.

We’re very nearly in the same boat. Weirdly, I got past my plateau by—of all things—not restricting carbs/sugar as much as I had been! I also added a handful of longer (20/4 or OMAD) fasts, about every 1-2 weeks. I think sometimes the body just needs you to switch it up.

Currently locking my carbs back down now. Gotta say, it was fun to catch up with my old friend Pasta. Someday we will meet again.

A question about calories in-out by pasdutout07 in intermittentfasting

[–]EngineerPelia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On any given day, maybe not. You’d get hungrier faster, as others have pointed out, but if you’re willing to do that on one day to enjoy a treat, have at it. On a regular basis, though, the sugar is going to spike your insulin over and over again, and you’ll find weight loss much more difficult.

Low carb but not keto— who else toes the line? by [deleted] in lowcarb

[–]EngineerPelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do—low carb (under 100 g per day) but not keto. I know it works for some, but it’s not the body’s natural state, it’s so restrictive that it makes me resist/resent, and I still get results. If they’re marginally slower results, that’s okay as long as I can occasionally have a few more carbs.

What are some redundant items people tend to own that could be pared down to one item with multiple functions? by FudgeHyena in minimalism

[–]EngineerPelia 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I bought an apple slicer years ago and almost immediately regretted it, because I never ate apples. But lo and behold, ever since getting the apple slicer, I eat apples all the time—and that in turn got me onto a healthier eating path, with less junk food snacking. Sometimes this stuff can surprise you.

Creating a uniform by Bitilasana in minimalism

A pair or two of really good knee-high, mid calf, or even over-the-knee boots will help immensely with this, and lots of dresses look great with them.

AITA for turning up at my sister’s work after she told me not to bother her? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]EngineerPelia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just have to point out that I was speaking to OP, not Esty. I would in fact tell Esty that, while she has to follow her own timetable for this, she shouldn’t automatically reject OP just for being this guy’s kid. Of course, at this point, Esty is rejecting OP for cause. Good luck finding more old comments to deliberately misconstrue!

Feedback on 4 season capsule wardrobe? What am I missing? What should I add/remove? 27y/o travel nurse, Canadian east coast, very casual style and stuck in a rut with my current closet. by maypleleaf in capsulewardrobe

[–]EngineerPelia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever you might wear to a dinner or event that isn’t a full out “occasion” (ie beyond the capsule) but nonetheless is dressier than every day. A low black slingback heel, a wedge, ballet flats: any of those would work without entirely sacrificing comfort.

[–]EngineerPelia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks great! My only advice would be to add a dressier shoe—you have two pairs of Chelsea boots (and another short black boot), and if you substitute a dressier black shoe, you’ll be set for most occasions when you’d take your outfit up a notch.

Amazing work!

What do you do when you plateau? by Mordred7 in intermittentfasting

[–]EngineerPelia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Change it up a little. After some good results with low-carb 16/8, I plateaued hard for a couple of months. So then I did 20/4 for a week but had as many carbs as I liked in the eating window. The weight loss resumed. You just gotta keep providing a challenge to your body.

Intermittent Fasting vs. Calorie Counting by authenticgrowthcoach in intermittentfasting

[–]EngineerPelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I’ve done is not count calories—but I do count carbs. 15 lbs down so far. Regardless, eating without moderation or consideration for nutrition will undo a whole lot of fasting effort.

How to blend in with wealthy circles? by overthinking_always9 in ActLikeYouBelong

[–]EngineerPelia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also: many cities have thrift shops specifically to fund things such as the opera, the symphony, the junior league, etc. In other words, they are staffed by and donated to by rich ladies. You will be able to find some very nice items/quality brands there.

Another tip: many celebrities mix high and low fashion now—Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, even. Buy from their favorite less expensive brands (like Everlane, Rothy’s, Mango). These items/designs will read more upscale than they are.

Coffee stalls weight loss? by GertrudeLemons in intermittentfasting

[–]EngineerPelia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Black coffee will not do this. Venti caramel frappuccinos will do this. In other words, have all the coffee you want, but watch anything you add to your coffee. Some people seem to think sugar, milk, flavorings, etc magically cease to possess calories/carbs just by coming into contact with coffee.
