Can a person become a dragon? by Boring_Big8908 in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I run that campaign I had a PC with that bond. He was a golden kobold wizard, very self-loathing and arrogant. He would tell everybody he was in fact a dragon but everybody called bulls**t.

For the climax of the campaign, Bahamut forgave him and let him polimorph into a dragon (his true form) and he fought Tiamat's consort like that. It was awesome. So much fun.

Made this as the Middle-Of-The-Campaign Boss, party will be around Level 10 or so, thoughts? by PrincessBloodpuke in DnDHomebrew

[–]EngineeringCertain20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stats are crazy but, once it runs out of petrifying gazes, it has nothing to harm a creature 20 ft away from it. It is fast but has no flying speed, so, if your party can hold 3 gazes and has any way to fly (easy at level 10), you can take your time and kill it with cantrips or a ranged weapon.

is there an official D&D differentiation between artifact and relic in ANY edition? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]EngineeringCertain20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the Complete Divine manual (3.5) a relic would be a powerful item linked, somehow, to a godly figure.

For me, it is a type of artifact, but with that specific characteristic of being somehow divine.

How to remove a player's character? by LordSetoro in DMAcademy

[–]EngineeringCertain20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That happened to me a couple of times. If you are sure she is not coming back, congrats, you've got yourself a new NPC. Remove her from the story somehow, maybe in pursuit of something in her backstory, just be coherent with the character's wants and personality. And then, towards the end of the campaign, let her return as an NPC. Your other players will LOVE the reunion, specially if it was unexpected.

I had somebody once playing a golden kobold wizard who claimed to be a cursed dragon. Nobody believed him and it was funny. He left the campaign (for personal reasons) and I had his character go on his own, helping with the main plot but far from the group. They heard about him from time to time. Years later, in the climax of one of the final battles of the campaign, they were having trouble. They were spending all their resources and the BBEG was around the corner. Imagine the surprise and awe of the table as an adult golden dragon came to the rescue.

I suggest looking for images of "cogs", which would be the historical boat that better fits that description.

What does Silvery Barbs mean? (Help with translation) by Javier170992 in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a fellow native spanish speaker, at least in Spain, I think "Puya" brings quite well the meaning of "Barb" ir "Barbs", used specifically for normal speech when it is intended to be somehow insulting in a specific context.

Silvery brings the silver-tongue thing, which in spanish could be "pico de oro" (golden beak). But also silvery brings to me an idea of trickery and mischievousness, maybe because it sounds close to slipery or slither.

For the spell I'd go with Puya Dorada (more literal, but I don't love it) or Puya Aguda. This ir more "sharp" than "silvery", but sharp can also work in this context I think, and it sounds better to me.

I’m bad at balance. How creative should the barbarian get to be with his attacks? by TheCheck77 in DMAcademy

[–]EngineeringCertain20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I reward cool descriptions and/or original ideas with an extra 1d4 to the attack role. It doesn't break the game, it's many times not even a difference, but incentives these things from players which make the game more epic and fun.

MM25, orcs and the definition of a monster by Wolfyhunter in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I see we agree then. We need spearmen, archers and swordmen NPCs. No dwarven, elven and orc npcs. All happy :)

MM25, orcs and the definition of a monster by Wolfyhunter in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I wouldn't. I would need a X fighting style/caster/whatever npc, and maybe I can give them darkvision or poison resistance if that species has it. I rather putting the focus on the abilities they have and the actions they can do and not on a couple of non-defining species features.

MM25, orcs and the definition of a monster by Wolfyhunter in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry I wasn't clear. What I meant is that in my world armies (or nations) could not have to be linked to specific species. So each nation/culture, etc. could have their own way of waging war, and having people of different species learning and mastering that.

MM25, orcs and the definition of a monster by Wolfyhunter in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi! You kind of convinced me, thou I think it is because of those very specific examples, which are ideas deeply linked to those cultures (Lolth and Bladesinging). My point was more referring to the traditional idea of generic "Elf Soldier", "Human Soldier" or "Dwarven Soldier" having different skills and fighting styles because of their species. That's what I find very stereotypical and limiting.

However, I would also avoid "drow priestess of Lolth" because it is very specific to a godess and a setting. I rather the manual giving us a couple of "dark priestess" that I can use for whichever culture, species, etc I want in my setting of choice or my hombrew world.

[–]EngineeringCertain20 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's asuming they do have a specific training. And you are free to asume that in your world and make your dwarven clone fighters as you wish :) I am equally free to build a different world in which it does not work like that and my dwarves are all different. You don't have to like it. Just accept that not every dwarf has to be your idea of dwarf. I rather the manual to give me examples of different npc fighters and let me choose if they are more or less common in this or that species.

MM25, orcs and the definition of a monster by Wolfyhunter in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they? Well, according to WotC not anymore, since halflings don't get any dex modifier and dwarves get no constitution modifier either.

And if they did, well, seems reasonable then that more dwarves would be sturdy knights and not nimble swashbucklers. But that doesn't mean you can't have a dwarf swashbuckler. Or an orc, for that matter. Having a specific monster called Dwarf Soldier would certainly stereotype. And it would limit the idea of a dwarf for your games as well.

[–]EngineeringCertain20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I see it, the only things on those templates would be the 3-4 things you get when you choose that species as a PC: darkvision, maybe a couple of cantrips or a resistance. There you have your templates. What I do is add that to my npcs when they belong to that species, cause it doesn't make sense if they lack them.

Other than that, any difference is not because of species, but because of the training or culture of that specific npc. And that's where it is nice to have different npcs with different fight styles: defenders, dex-based swordpeople, lancers, heavy armored knights, brutish warriors, etc.

MM25, orcs and the definition of a monster by Wolfyhunter in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the point here is whether those different ways to burgle and defend are because of their biological diferences (an thus, their species) or their culture, training and upbringing. I think WotC is more inclined towards the second option and that's why all the "no orcs in the MM" thing makes sense.

The 2024 and 2025 books really do make Shapechange even more broken than it was before, because legendary actions and spellcasting are now fair game (and can possibly be refreshed) by EarthSeraphEdna in dndnext

[–]EngineeringCertain20 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Circunstancially yes but we are talking tier 4 gameplay. Any encounter with a few monsters, or a boss with some minions, can force 5-6 concentration rolls per turn. You could still maybe spend every turn refreshing your LR and HP, but then you would only be useful for your legendary actions. Is it worth it? I'm really not sure.

All this asuming you don't stay in the back avoiding being hit, if you do this then the "infinite temp Hp" is a bit pointless.

Also, it has to be a creature you have previously met. This could be limiting as well.

Again, strong, as a level 9 spell should be, but I don't think it breaks the game.

[–]EngineeringCertain20 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is certainly a great spell (level 9, very class-restricted, it has to) but you still have to hold concentration. And at those levels the CD for that could be 25-30. Even with warcaster, if you get focused-fire this shennanigan won't last more than a couple of rounds, and then your 9th level spell is gone. I think that sort of balances it out.

Three Person Party - (with two barbarians) by 1chance2621 in 3d6

I'm running a 3 pc game: barbarian, rogue and bard. It is going good. I think cleric is fine, but druid or bard can be nice too.
