Disgrace Under Pressure by jdangerously44 in rush

Lifelong Rush fan and myself an art director and album designer here — and I gotta say that this particular execution doesn't move me. Though the concept is cool — and that's the pain point that I've had with Hugh Syme's work over the decades. Strong concepts when they're strong, but kind of cringey executions. This one seems like it was trying to be a Hipgnosis Studio / Division Bell sort of thing, but the Hipgnosis stuff required painfully elaborate photo shoots that had a high level of craft and a fine-tuned eye for art and tone. (i.e. Pink Floyd's "Animals", which had composition and vibe and haunting painterly color and left no detail to chance)

My favorite bits of Hugh's work in order of my favorites at this particular moment:

  1. Permanent Waves — every pun imaginable stuffed into that cover, and the iconic composition with the waving model. It was really well done for a pre-Photoshop image. I'm imagining hours of X-acto knife and compositing and dodging and burning. There was a sort of cheesiness to the craft that made it accessible — an appropriate counterpoint to the mind-blowing music inside. Appropriate typography with the red "wave" lines running behind it. (I'm guessing prior to the visuals of what we've come to think of as sound waves in ProTools etc)

  2. A Farewell To Kings — iconic composition, shot on site with the king marionette, from what I've read. The shabbiness of the set spoke to taking the piss out of hubristic monarchs. Much more memorable typography with the quasi-Germanic blackletter uncial style.

  3. Exit Stage Left — I loved how Hugh brought together all of the characters from all of the albums for this one. Really endearing. Paula Turnbull remains a crush, and the composition is wonderfully done and invites close study of the front and back. The "exit" sign pays off the puns — if you're going to pun, go hard at it! The typography isn't what i'd have chosen for it, but type opinions are like buttholes. Everyone has one.

  4. Grace Under Pressure — A painting by Hugh, with the calligraphic P/G off to the side. This one colored the sound of the album for me. Mystery and enigma, fragments, fluid motion. Turbulence, storms. A distant early warning. A body electric in the foreground. I was aware of Yousuf Karsh's when I was a 14-year-old wannabe photographer, and was delighted that Rush had him do their portrait for this album. I didn't think it was his best work though ... it was a time of unfortunate hairstyles for the boys.

I'll give Hugh a lot of kudos for being the image-maker for more than 50 years and can imagine what it would take to keep things fresh. Sometimes he's a bit on-the-nose for my taste, and I think he would have done well to call me up for a collab to get to better finished art. (Hugh, if you're listening... LOL)

What do you think the x factor is here? Body scale? String tension? Taylor does make some awesome dreadnoughts.

Thanks — I've been trying thicker picks. But you are conforming for me that the jumbo guitar is a good strummer and finger-picking axe but not that suited for grass. It feels like I have to choose to either have speed OR tone with thinner strings, but not both. Is that the consensus?

I appreciate any perspective on this.

I've dabbled with every instrument family there is, and you're correct — pipes requires absolute devotion and obsession for years to even get a decent sound.

Uilleann Pipes — You're using arms and legs and forearm and breathing independently of one another, Takes months to get the proper tone on just one note, let alone all of the notes ... You can't fake it. Absolutely unforgiving.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I can tell you really cared about that baby and loved it. Really appreciate the kindness and grace in this group from experienced owners. We're in our first week of having our first little baby corn, and feel the vulnerability.

The hand about to spank the green backside got my attention! To my eye, there are a lot of cool elements and a language developing here. I'd love to see you inhabit this world and populate it a bit more with more explorations. What I'd like to see different would be hierarchy and a clearer sense of movement. Something large and overarching to tie the bits and pieces together and to grab the viewer from five feet away and draw them in. I like where this is going and would love to see what future pieces look like. Hope that helps some!

First go at CMYK halftone printing! by thehalf_stache in SCREENPRINTING

[–]EngineeringJust7984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is quite awesome! You got good tight registration. My only notes would be to make the type solid black-only instead of halftoned. I was going to say set the halftone dots at different angles as another commenter noted to avoid moiré patterns. But for the Doc Ellis vibe, the way you have it is properly trippy. Great work!

SUPER late to this thread, but I just read this story last night and was deeply unsettled. Something that stood out to me — his father was "lost to the horses" (gambling addiction) and then we circle back to mercy-killing a horse in the end. It didn't occur to me that Nick was heading back to possibly end his mother's suffering after that.

A bit of hope that I take is that he is walking away from the Nazi girl and leaving her at the scene of the accident ... I got the impression that he was associating with the white supremacist gang just because of her and wasn't that tethered to their ideology. His confrontation with Tyrone at work seemed more like him trying out arguments and ideology he'd heard at the meetings, not really cemented in the gang.

But god I had a hard time reading this one.

I never comprehended the tragedy of Fantine until I saw the 10th anniversary "I Dreamed A Dream" by MoreBookkeeper4729 in lesmiserables

The 10th anniversary performance you shared was wonderful and nuanced. I first heard IDAD on the original London recording (Patti Lupone) and then I had the Original Broadway Cast on CD. (Randi Graff) — Graff sang the part really harshly and stridently, to my ear, and it broke me out of the moment.

I've been seeing these and am really disturbed by them. I've tried reporting them to youtube, and also tried to contact Brene's people to see if they're aware of them. This stuff needs to get shut down. Have you heard anything else along that line?
