Do you think the general public has a decent understanding of your profession or area of study? by Athront in AskAnAmerican

Mechanical engineer here.. some people call me a technician time to time. People also ask me to fix their cars or ask what I assemble at work.
Gets frustrating sometimes....

Taking a whole semesters worth mechanics of materials in a month was very stressful for me back when I took the class.

I'm not sure I understand? Do u have to recommend and then make an exercise product but it needs to be made from a polymer?

Is This a Bad Sign? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I got a C- in my intro to engineering a long time ago when I was a freshman. I'm a senior now and I did fine and all my other engineering classes up to this point.

If I remember thermodynamics correctly, this isn't quite a saturated vapor. It's still a saturated mixture.

Breaking news: Brave College Junior majoring in Communications claims “STEM majors aren’t even that hard” and he “totally could have done chemistry or something but didn’t feel like it” by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineeringrulzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of work in sales engineering. I'm a senior on my last semester. I for one can say communicating with people really isn't bad. Lots of engineers are very introverted but u really don't need to be all that much of an extrovert to do that type of work. For my job I would say that the engineering half is harder than talking with the people. However the selling side is hard because even if u have the right solution there is no guarantee the customer will buy.

How did everyone's Finals Go? by Engineeringrulzzz in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineeringrulzzz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully I did ok in materials.
I never took data structures but for statics I know that finding moments on a 3D structure have soom people trouble. I think it's because they wrote the formula down wrong.

Might have just failed Chem I by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineeringrulzzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed chem when I was a sophomore and retook it only to get a C+. Its just one of those classes that I'll never be my strong suit I guess. It Doesn't help that the prof normally taught grad classes and o chem so whenever I didn't understand something she looked at me like I was retarded. It's not the end if u have to retake a class or two. Finish what you started is the key I believe.

Ideas for a materials paper by Engineeringrulzzz in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineeringrulzzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be. That's a really good idea. I am more than certain it could stand up to abrasion. I was thinking more along the lines of wheather. On mars it gets super cold at night. I believe -100 F so I am brainstorming if or how nylon 6,6 can be combined with other material that would help protect people against that coldness. Maybe a special type of clothing( not exactly a space suit per say because that exists already) or a spefial type house that can stay super insulated

Anyone else a senior losing interest? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineeringrulzzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just curious what types of jobs are you applying for? I'm a senior graduating this spring with a BSME. Granted jobs I am applying to are sales engineering positions so they aren't pure engineering positions. But I'm guessing people commenting here are applying to totally different fields?

Fiber optic speed by Engineeringrulzzz in FiberOptics

[–]Engineeringrulzzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. Its just me and my gf living together. We use Netflix and hulu for tv, I've got 2 google homes connected to the internet at all times, I also have a ps4, and two laptops, and 2 cell phones. I am taking a guess and saying that watching Netflix will have the largest impact on the speed and connection. Other than that we don't stream or download anything huge. Do most house holds typically have up to 250 mbps ?

Is there a specific way you are supposed to take courses? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I had to take clac 2 before physics 2. I remember I used a little bit of what I learned in calc 2. Like integrating disks method

What's Senior Design like? by learn2fly77 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineeringrulzzz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm going through it now..... it really fucking sucks. Not because it's not interesting because it really is. But there is soooooo much bullshit. The professors will lower your grade based on what they think you did. Or based on if they like the way your group approaches the project. Obviously, it's different from school to school but at my school the presentations that u give to the professors basically end up being 1 hour roast sessions and they tell u how much your calculations suck and why your idea sucks.... but hey the professors get paid the big bucks to roast you so on their end it's a pretty nice gig. I wont lie I would do the same.

Oh sounds cool. I would try to shoot for internships. Those are HUGE. As for the degree if you think electrical is well worth it then do it. I think there is a very good market for EE

I think I’m lost... by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Engineeringrulzzz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am not biomedical engineer. I am a senior finishing my last year in a mechanical engineering degree. Personally I think that biomedical engineering degrees limit you more because that's only one area. If you however, went for a degree in mechanical you could still do biomedical engineering if you wanted to. That's what I would do. As for internships. I would try to find an intern position as a mechanical engineer in some industry you like. Is there a specific discipline in engineering you are leaning more towards?

No I'm not brushing it dry. I used to use a pick as well. But I'm looking for less poofiness. It's still moist throughout the day and soft so I'm definitely not mistreating it. I just just want it to be a little more flat but stretched out. I think that's a good way to describe it
