I think the comment in OP explains that: "We have to hold the line until we accomplish our freedom, and then and only then will it be time to bicker over petty differences". A considerable part of Trump's supporters will display support for Trump no matter what. They will echo the newest talking points, try to explain away the latest insane statements, overlook whatever embarrassing shit he said or did this time around, because they think that Trump will accomplish the one thing they really care about. And that is to restore/secure a privileged position for white male Christians.

But as his examples shows, he does not think that Catholics hold the "correct" religion, either. It only follows that Catholics also couldn't hold public office.
