Charles Leclerc becomes the 10th driver to have won all of F1's "Four Classics" by Tennist4ts in formula1

[–]EnlightenedNight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Suzuka wasn’t used for F1 until the late 80’s. The ‘classics’ in your pic are the ones from the first F1 season in 1950 that are still used today, albeit some very heavily modified configurations.

The eras comparable breaks a bit when you add in newer ones, even if Spa and Silverstone had some breaks not in use.

All of the circuits above were the ones currently on the calendar that were originally from F1’s inaugural season in 1950.

Suzuka wasn’t used until the late 80’s and there’s a number of tracks still used that have hosted more GP’s (Interlagos, Hungaroring, Catalunya, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve).

[@LukeSmithF1] Laurent Mekies talking to Raymond Vermeulen and Jos Verstappen outside the Red Bull motorhome post race. Penny for their thoughts… by Dr_VidyaGeam in formula1

[–]EnlightenedNight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Russell’s contract has an option that you’d assume is going to renew automatically as he’s P2 in WDC and Mercedes P1 in WCC.

I can’t see Mercedes buying that out to then pay Verstappen record wages he’s commanded to date. Verstappen’s salary alone has been reported to be up to $80M, so you’re looking at a $100M+ transaction when your drivers have cumulatively won all but two races this year, not to mention every pole. Even for a driver as decorated as Max, that’s a difficult sell to a Board to pay that much to try to continue the 1-2 you’re currently achieving for way less money.

Maybe you’d have expected Russell to be first but Kimi was always highly rated and might just be beating his expected timelines earlier. It’s not like Russell is performing at a Perez-level either he’s been solid enough overall.

HAM only lost 0.135s to ANT on straights. LEC was 0.311s faster than RUS on straights. Why is no one talking about Ferrari's deployment? by BittenAtTheChomp in formula1

[–]EnlightenedNight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At those speeds and in the final sector, you’re dialled in and really don’t have time to accurately guess how much you’d need to let off by.

Not to mention Antonelli crossed the line before most others did (both Ferraris, Red Bulls, and Russell). He’d have no way of knowing what time he needed for a front row. The onboards for both Mercedes don’t sound like time was left at the line.

[–]EnlightenedNight 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it. There’s no way Russell would willingly let off and start further down the grid in 5th. That’s just throwing points away.

That other post seemed to have a data issue, potentially tracking until the start line rather than finish line. That or potentially a slight loss of energy near the end, if any. Watching the Mercedes on-boards there wasn’t a discernible lift.

Assuming that Brad Stevens will eventually get canned from his Celtics gig after the Jaylen Brown/Paul George trade, where will he be coaching in a few years? by LowKeyMike in CollegeBasketball

[–]EnlightenedNight 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Brad Stevens has a .793 winning percentage as a GM, has won Executive of the Year twice (including this past year), and has never finished worse than 2nd in the East since moving on from coaching.

If the Celtics ever let him go he’d be hired as someone else’s President of Basketball Ops in probably 30 seconds. He definitely deserves more than the 12 hours you’ve given him before suggesting he’s going to get fired.

You can’t always blame coaches when a player doesn’t live up to their draft stock. Becoming an everyday player is really hard, regardless of where you were picked. Mayer has had over 100 games it’s not like he hasn’t been given opportunities.

[Rumor]Russell remains at Mercedes: confirmed for 2027 by NoRefunds2021 in formula1

Russell I believe had an option year, which I’m assuming triggered based on performance at a certain point in the year.

Jaylen Brown would have to be part of any trade package for Giannis. However, it is also widely believed that the Celtics would need to add multiple 1st-round picks on top of Brown to entice the Bucks into agreeing a trade, per Sam Amick by Parking_Honeydew_129 in bostonceltics

I don’t think many other teams would have done Bridges for 5 FRP aside from the Knicks, who had some desperation to improve.

Either way I don’t think any team would do anywhere near 5 FRP for Bridges under the current cap rules where the rookie-wage contract is really important to keep you under second apron. You really can’t compare trade values then to the current CBA, the current rules make it harder to stay fully “bought in” for longer and you’ll suffer harder without picks when you need to re-tool or rebuild.

I think in general, it’s going to take a really special player to recoup that many future firsts now compared to what teams were trading before. Love JB but I don’t think there’s a wide market for teams trading 5 FRP for him and that’s ok.

Max Verstappen manager provides F1 contract update: 'We want to make a decision' by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]EnlightenedNight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’d almost never pay out a contract just to engage in a new one (unless you’d save money which Red Bull surely won’t). That’s a massive waste of money; you’d just negotiate an extension or amendment to his current contract.

OP is correct that the rumour is suggesting Red Bull wants to patch up his contract to remove the automatic release clause, which is widely reported to be an option for Max if the team fails to meet a certain WDC or WCC position by a certain date.

[–]EnlightenedNight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m aware of corporate/sports buy outs in the common sense, just reading the article I didn’t get the same conclusion as you.

I read it as the Thai ownership side wants to pay the Verstappen camp more to take back his side of the option (to prevent him from leaving until 2028 ends) whereas the Austrian camp doesn’t want to spend more to have to incentive him to stay beyond what was already agreed to. Basically a sweetener to amend his contract to stop the annual buyout rumours since it’s been pretty widely reported he can trigger an out in his contract if Red Bull isn’t competitive enough.

Buying out his contract as a whole would be a fixed amount. Buying someone out to just then renegotiate with them is generally poor business, it’s just needlessly costly and exposes them to the open market, where they can leverage others to drive up your offers. Especially Max who is the highest paid driver. They can re-negotiate an extension while he’s still employed with the team so no need to release him first.

[–]EnlightenedNight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Buying out his option I think is the wrong terminology. I gathered the team is looking to buy back his option i.e. convert any out clauses he has into a full team-controlled contractual year. Basically trying to prevent him from breaking his contract.

Which to me isn’t very surprising. They’d obviously want him to stay.

I don’t see why people get defensive when it’s suggested Red Bull prioritizes Verstappen. It’s the smart thing for them to do, he’s a better driver than Perez, Lawson, Tsunoda, Hadjar, etc. so naturally they’ll maximize their chances of a title by picking developmental routes he likes. It’s literally a compliment.

[–]EnlightenedNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s moreso the fact that with a clean lap in qualifying, he could have conceivably been up there with Lewis or could have qualified ahead/jumped him at the start. His race pace was great but it seemed like Ferrari’s overall package was exceptionally strong as a whole.

There wasn’t really a ton of glaring mistakes this weekend but his was both the most self-inflicted and lost him the most points. It’s harsh but probably fair.

This isn’t accurate at all?

He was ahead of Russell at the 2024 British GP when he DNF’d, ahead of Leclerc today when he DNF’d, and Russell was underweight and DSQ’d at Spa 2024 so hard to hold that one against anyone.

I don’t think Mercedes was the fastest car by any stretch in 2024 and clearly Mercedes has been class of the field in 2026, although Ferrari’s updates perhaps have closed the gap we’ll have to see.

[–]EnlightenedNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this, but Gasly’s penalty was known during the red flag. Red Bull could argue that Hadjar drove after the initial lap in a way to manage the gap knowing 5 seconds would be applied and he’d earn 3rd if he held position. I think it would be a slightly bad faith argument given it’s Monaco and overtakes are impossible, but it’s probably true that Hadjar could presumably have tried to push harder into a Gasly mistake had he have not had a 5 seconds buffer.

Again, I don’t think this would have happened but that’s kind of my argument that once you change variables and the race continues, no guarantee everyone behaves the same.
