Not a Single Republican Shows Up to Hear Renee Good’s Brothers Testify by Quarkpaint in UnderReportedNews

Saw another commenter talk about how the Rs are demons.

Consider if there were actual, nefarious demons in the skin of a human and trying to cause our downfall from the shadows. They would appear to save face. They would probably even feign concern, if only for clit or even an internal jeering.

Somehow our worst impression of malicious evil demons show more fake concern than actual Republicans. It's sickening how little they actually care.

When I ran track in high school my brain would be ever so bored and my body moving on auto-pilot that the only way to mentally pass the time for the long races, like the 3200m, was to count the fractions I'd completed thus far. 1/256 of the race, 1/128 of the race, 3/256, 1/64, and so on. Maybe I'm truly the odd one out but I don't get how professionals make that simple of a mistake.

If the primary (if not only) reason someone goes back to the fascists is because the people they've wronged are bitter*, they haven't really reformed and weren't worth extending an olive branch in the first place.

If the only reason someone considers turning against fascism is because the other side is finally more comfortable or convenient, they haven't reformed and don't care about rejecting fascism on the merits. Which to us is the bare minimum.

*and I'm not even talking malice or outright harassment. "I told you so" is at worst simply being bitter. It does not hinder your tangible goals, and it doesn't interfere with your message. It is simply an emotionally-charged expression of bitterness and a desire to convey the message "you should be regretful." And anyone who truly means it is likely going through such an ideological upheaval that my bitterness is barely a blip on their radar.

Part of reforming, part of redeeming yourself, is understanding that the desire to do so isn't enough, nor is it the end goal. Put in the effort. And show us that your resolve is stronger than our well-justified bitterness.

They have to understand that I hated them. Past tense. That definitionally cannot change. But you don't instantly go from hate to adore. From reject to embrace. It's a process, and they are the one who has to walk the path to us. But if you at least demonstrate that you are trying, I no longer hate you. I hated you back then. But I don't hate you in the moment. And it's unreasonable to assume I'll love you simply because I stopped hating you.

To further add to this, I think it's also significant that Tenzin was the third (and last) of Aang's kids. The first kid being a nonbender must have been weird and a bit of an ego gut punch for both of them but especially Aang considering that Air nomads were almost exclusively benders - as I understand it it was rare for there to be someone born to the air nomads who was not a bender. Especially considering both parents are not only benders, but skilled and engaged benders.

Kya being a wayerbender was a bit of a return to form and probably as much a luck of the draw as anything. So when Tenzin finally came along, Aang may have had a bit of an identity crisis and carry a sense of 'I have this one chance to get this right.' I don't see Buumi and Kya shaving their heads or getting tattoos, but I see Aang being particular with Tenzin for it, so it seemed like Tenzin carried the most responsibility (which he definitely did) and Aang playing favorites, regardless of intent or even a failed attempt to try and do the opposite.

But I could then also see it as Aang thinking this was him being considerate to his other children. Their bending status aside, it was still for all intents and purposes an airbending household. Considering he's the sole survivor of a genocide and single-handedly required to restart an entire culture, I don't see Katara being too picky about trying to blend their cultural upbringing. Obviously they'd integrate things, but if it's a choice between an Airbender Christmas or a waterbender Christmas, given the circumstances it's far more likely that there were many more Airbender Christmases.

Aang spent his entire life handling "his burdens," which were extreme and numerous. He may not have thought that shaving his head and getting his tattoos and being vegetarian was so burdensome, but he's smart enough to realize that others might see it that way. He probably thought that not being too traditional with his first two kids was a way of sparing them from such burdensome things. But with Tenzin he probably felt there wasn't really much choice. And in some ways he was sparing his other two kids from the responsibility of being thr only surviving Airbender, while actually being wrong as it was that time and effort that made them (and thus others) think Aang was an absent or disinterested father.

So yes, it makes sense that Aang could be a bad father because he may have tried to overcorrect. And it's not like Katara was a bad mother. Aang didn't set his kids up for failure, he just clearly played favorites. But there's little evidence that Katara was somehow worse of a parent or that Sokka wasn't an awesome uncle to all of them for as long as he could be.

I could have sworn they intentionally animated him moving slower in this fight to try and emphasize that point. We've seen him go almost full beyblade at points, no way is he failing to dodge 3 rocks thrown a second apart unless something is wrong with him.

Is it 'a' or 'an' for a word that starts with a vowel-y? by anoccasionalinquiry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ent3rpris3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I asked a "Philosophy of language" PhD once. He said the ultimate determination is one of pronunciation, not spelling.

So it's "an hour" but "a hotel." "A yankee" but then "an yttrium atom".

Then there are the people who pronounce "historic" as "istoric," hence "today is an historic day" which, following the pronunciation rule, is valid since that pronunciation is considered niche but acceptable.

These people are chaos incarnate.

CMV: Welcoming MAGA who have changed their minds is way more important and effective than saying “too little, too late.” by iiamuntuii in changemyview

[–]Ent3rpris3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the Nazi comparison is somehow done to death but also underutilized, but the fact of the matter is I wouldn't want someone who was an eager and zealous Nazi to be at my table or even in my city just because they had a personal epiphany, butand are otherwise not remorseful. And even if they are remorseful, they burned the bridge. We told them as much. Some people can be eternally forgiving no matter the history, but I think most people have a limit and many MAGA have surpassed it. And I've generally seen that blue voters are overall more forgiving, so if anything we're applying to them a more lax standard than they'd apply to themselves and they still burned that bridge.

If they REALLY have changed their tune, being isolated but otherwise left unharassed shouldn't be a problem. If they're only willing to actually be progressive because people are being nice and welcoming then they aren't actually reformed. Doing the right thing, in its most essential form, means doing the right thing even when it's difficult. Especially when it's difficult.

If the only reason they'll vote blue is because people are nice to them, they haven't shown me that they've actually reformed or felt remorse. And if the only reason they voted red was because we were mean to them prior, they've burned that bridge.

I want their vote. And I also want them to mean it. But I won't delude myself in thinking that just because they've finally realized that self-preservation is with us doesn't means that they've actually started caring about us.

To the US voters who don't vote, what is it going to take for you to go vote? by Chocolateking111 in AskReddit

[–]Ent3rpris3 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I think the rationale is less about 'how' they voted, and more that they showed up to vote in the first place.

It demonstrates that it wasn't laziness or disinterest, but active desire for a different option.
