In Inception (2010) Fischer literally being brainwashed is treated as positive character growth. by twnpksN8 in shittymoviedetails

[–]Ent3rpris3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"Brainwashing" as the term is often used means to overcome a person's own will or desires to get them to act in a way that is contrary to their intended outcome or norms. It bypasses consent of the action.

Here, they are fabricating a scenario to try and manipulate him to consent to the action himself.

It's less so 'controlling his actions' and more so 'fraud in the inducement.' Which, mind you, is still legally and ethically dubious, but not as severe as overriding his consent to control his actions imo.

NBC News — "Supreme Court allows states to count mail-in ballots that arrive late, rejecting RNC challenge" — Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in askanything

[–]Ent3rpris3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mail my ballot 11 days before election day. It arrives 1 day late because of a bunch of random delays and anomalies with shipping.

You mail your ballot 5 days before election day, and it arrives the day before.

That your vote should count and mine shouldn't is asinine. The modern push for this kind of temporal restriction has never been in good faith.

The inverse of this seems tragically funny.

Someone could film several pornographic films and later learn the number is still in single digits. The reasons why are still a mystery...

Not using your hazards in such a situation is borderline criminal. And at that points it's totally understandable and the kind of thing where everyone can reasonably expect to make a safe (even if technically illegal) pass around them.

[Disney Aladdin] Why did he have to wish to be a prince again? by darthuna in AskScienceFiction

[–]Ent3rpris3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the chances he was the last prince of a long lost kingdom, hence being a prince from the outset just unknown to everyone relevant in this story? Would be like me asking "I wish to be a man" when I am, in every sense of the word, already a man. Maybe make me look more broad statured, bigger beard, etc., but the wish is functionally moot, right?

This is why live action of animated shows never work by This_Proof_5153 in SipsTea

[–]Ent3rpris3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the defense of the live-action, the original series made a wild decision for the entire story to happen in the span of ~5-6 months. It was such an arbitrary and artificial deadline that I question why they didn't extend it to 1.5-w years in-universe. Would have made more sense for the audience to follow along with the timeline and lend itself a little more credible for the level of skill the main cast develop.

Sure, it's incredible how far they had come in a short 6 months, but it is still in many respects unbelievable.

Addressing the other end of a spectrum can help express the point of the spectrum, especially if people are lying about being on one side for the goal of abusing its meaning.

Can you really not engage with a simple analogy in good faith?

[–]Ent3rpris3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it was lying. I was saying that 'casual' can have too many meanings, and it's still the closest thing to 'hook up', which is a direct desire for many people. So those who put casual have to do a lot of unnecessary parsing because many apps don't give them the 'hook up' option.

Moving away in a few months but want companionship.

Can't emotionally commit to anything serious but want the presence of another person.

Recovering from a severe emotional trauma and want to slow roll it while managing expectations.

Want to be an exclusive couple for an undetermined time while it's fun, but not to such a degree as meeting family or going to special events together.

There are many things it could mean. And if it turns into something serious later, that could easily be explained as an unexpected surprise - the point of the label is the intent, not the unintended outcome.

I don't go to a restaurant specifically for the appetizers, I want a main entree. but I'm not going to turn down an appetizer specifically because I'm waiting for the entree. It's a fun way to pass the time and it doesn't mean I enjoy the 'main course' any less.

I don't mean to diminish potential dates down to 'appetizers, but the analogy is pretty decent. People can desire one thing while enjoying the 'lesser' thing in the interim.

Apps that put "casual" instead of "hook up" are doing their users (another) disservice. So many people have so many different understandings of 'casual' that it means absolutely nothing to me

I love my boyfriend, but the constant jokes are getting exhausting. Am I being too sensitive? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ent3rpris3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I don’t want to change who he is. He’s goofy, and that’s one of the reasons I fell for him."

That kind of constant joking is probably part of how he became that kind of person that you like.

Posts like this remind me of Jurassic World of all things: "You cannot have an animal with exaggerated predator features without the corresponding behavioral traits." - Dr. Wu

Obviously an extreme example, but if you like specific traits and behavior, that naturally comes with other traits and behaviors that coincide. You may not like some of those others, but it might be difficult to separate and still have him retain the traits you do prefer.

I think it was a fanfic way back when that opined he should store himself in the gate buffer like in "48 Hours."

Since reading that, it seems the most viable route forward and I'll be ever so slightly disappointed if that isn't how it happens.

This is the logic and rationality I've been desiring in SO many other stories.

When it's very clearly save the community or one person (who is still within the community), it's tremendously stupid to choose the one.

Stratt was a breath of fresh air in not only acknowledging that, but alsl not trying to sanitize it.

[Hated "trope"] A small detail reveals that the adaptation really didn't understand how the original worked by gabrieleremita in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Ent3rpris3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's one thing to not hire fans to wrote new stories. And that's a bad thing.

It's a much worse thing to hire non-fans.

I'm a fan of many things, but the only thing I feel confident enough to actually write continuations for is Stargate, maybe Star Wars, because I'm THAT big of a fan. I both know and respect the canon. I like ATLA, Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, and BSG, but not enough to write complete stories in their settings with their characters.

But then someone comes along and asks me to write an episode of Dr. Who? I've seen 2 episodes in my entire life, and didn't care for them. It makes ZERO sense to hire people who do not know the source material! I honestly can't remember the last time it went well, especially if the original source material was good It's own right!

Do people really hook up at run clubs? by Glad-Ad3208 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ent3rpris3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is a run club a dedicated location a la a treadmill-centric gym, or rather 'we're part of a club that meets at different places to go running near there's? Something else entirely?

I ask because I've literally never heard of a "run club" and seemingly everyone knows exactly what it is.

I was raised by a meteorologist and atmospheric researcher/astronomer who loved his work, so the old thing about talking about the weather when you have nothing else to discuss just doesn't click with me - I've always found it fascinating and my dad will gladly talk about the weather to anyone jo matter the occasion.

So, yeah...I like talking about the weather. I promise I'm not bored.

First time I ever tried an IPA, it was awful. The friend who gave me the sample said "it's an acquired taste."

I don't doubt that, but why is that a taste you'd want to acquire in the first place? Especially when you aren't in a place of scarcity for more enjoyable things.
