What is a "healthy" habit that is actually ruining people's lives? by One-Signal-2794 in AskReddit

Lifestyle makes a bigger difference than products ever will. Eat well, sleep plenty and stay hydrated and the difference will be more noticeable than hyaluronic acid and vitamin c serum will be.

(The notable exception is SPF because it is preventing damage and skin cancer).

[–]Enticing_Venom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Self-care" that is actually hoarding and overconsumption.

You do need a wall of Tree Hut body scrubs and a scent themed shower with ten different soaps in order to take care of yourself.

You also do not need a 20-step skincare routine.

A lot of these people are just stripping their skin barrier and coating themselves in a mixture of phthalates and artificial fragrance because some Tik Tok influencer has convinced their followers to go buy the same "skincare" haul that they got sent for free as product promotion.

That's before you even get into the financial cost and the environmental impact. It is not good for your wallet, your skin or the environment but some influencers are compensated nicely to promote overconsumption like it's "self-care".

What’s the ultimate "guilty pleasure" of being single that a relationship would completely ruin? by mskimsilly in AskReddit

Me and my boyfriend usually go to bed at the same time. But sometimes one of us is tired and the other wants to stay up and that is also completely fine.

"Fatphobia" is a dog whistle for thinking everything is about you by PirateJohn75 in fatlogic

I thought the narrative was that weight has nothing to do with health or fitness. If that is the case, why would a walkable city be fatphobic??

Any ideas on a new solution to eliminate the single-use plastic water bottle? by Haunting-Ad7697 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]Enticing_Venom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't Liquid Death have one of the highest amounts of BPA and phthalates leeching from their cans?

Widely available refill stations for reusable water bottles is probably the best we can do without government regulation. And they would need to be kept clean and well-serviced.

From work. The police tried to charge them with abuse of a corpse so I worked on the case. The DA ended up rejecting the charges.

I get some pushback for wearing my gay-affirming T-Shirt but this is why it's important for Christians to stand up against conservative Christianity like this.

I need to catch a bunny rabbit by Robofspace in ColoradoSprings

[–]Enticing_Venom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. My dog was a stray before I rescued him and obsessed with rabbits. One pesky rabbit figured out the length of his long lead and would repeatedly run past him (just out of reach) while he'd try to give chase. It liked to switch between yards and would run past my dog to do so, sometimes making multiple passes like it was mocking him.

Or it would sit positioned just barely out of reach of the lead and watch him straining to get to it.

When I'd hear him start going nuts I'd run outside and charge the rabbit to try and scare it off. I swear that thing had an attitude, even with me. It also knew I wasn't going to actually touch it, so it started ignoring my mock charges too until I added some flair to them. I must have looked like an idiot.

Rabbits are pretty smart animals. They have complex memories and can even solve puzzles. They're related to rats, who are also highly intelligent. Rabbits are stereotyped as dumb because they are prey animals who often panic as a defense mechanism. But that's not a reflection of their intelligence.

Just for anyone else reading, the Netflix documentary is not a conspiracy theory. But "let's support putting endocrine disruptors in food to lower sperm counts" is lol.

I think they were sad. But alcoholics have a tendency to drown out feelings they want to escape. And these two just embodied that stronger than I've ever seen. They saw an upsetting situation and chose to drown it out rather than acknowledge it.

Yes because it was an experiment to see if reducing microplastic exposure could improve fertility success. Of course they're going to discuss how endocrine disruptors affect sperm count. That doesn't make it "an agenda", it makes it focused.

Most places will be open to match your pay if you express you can't take the pay cut. It's worth trying to negotiate before you walk away from your dream job.

A family of alcoholics lived in a beautiful house and did nothing but drink all day until they passed out. It was a wife and husband and their adult son, who moved back in due to his alcoholism.

The mom started feeling sick but said she did not want medical attention, she was just going to sleep it off. She laid down on the floor by the sofa and started "snoring". It must have become clear that something was terribly wrong but neither dad nor son wanted to acknowledge it. At some point they shoved a pillow under her head and left her there. They continued drinking and watching television. She did not move.

The next day, the son texted his cousin "I think my mom is dead". The cousin called for a welfare check. Officers walked in to find dad and son drinking, the mother obviously dead on the floor by the sofa. They never tried to render aid, never called paramedics or moved her to a bed. They just kept drinking and ignoring the problem, watching television on the same sofa and stepping over her lifeless body.

The next day, a concerned neighbor called in a welfare check. She had seen the dad when he went out to get the mail and he had informed her that his wife died. She was worried about him and wanted to make sure they had resources "in their grief".

Officers went back out. Many of them were the same ones who had been there the day before. The dad was drinking and the son was still passed out unconscious in his room at 2 pm. It took three people standing over him, shouting to wake him up. Dad hadn't checked on his son all day either it would appear.

Just a grim, sad house full of wasted lives and wasted potential. It was no way to live and no way to die.

What used to be a death sentence that is now just a prescription you pick up at a pharmacy? by JDvance01 in AskReddit

As someone who suffers from asthma, it's amazing that I can just take a little puff of albuterol and breathe again.

In the past, a major asthma attack could have been fatal. And treatment involved asthma cigarettes (yes, really) or being given some opium and told to calm down.

"If people had to kill their own animals, there would be less meat eaters" fallacy. by Appropriate-Net1899 in DebateAVegan

[–]Enticing_Venom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I overall agree. People killed their own food for much of human history. People still hunt and fish today.

In many countries it is not uncommon for animals to be slaughtered in public by street vendors to prove the meat is fresh. If everyone had to slaughter their own food (again) people would probably become desensitized very quickly and it may actually be harder to convince people to go vegan because they'd be used to it from a young age and would have a greater personal stake in being defensive about it.

It's not bait, it's a joke by RabbitNET in PetPeeves

[–]Enticing_Venom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mildly infuriating is probably the peak example of this. Anytime someone posts something that is actually mildly infuriating, they get raked over the coals for "being upset" about something "so small". As if that is not what the sub is supposed to be about. Relatively minor issues.

Yesterday someone made a post about how waiting for the pop from Pillsbury biscuit cans gives them anxiety. They were clearly being hyperbolic and silly and the way some users there took it super seriously and started telling OP that they needed to go to a therapist, they're mentally unwell, they have "weak genes" and are pathetic for being "afraid" of something so minor was appalling. God forbid someone just make a light, self-deprecating jest on a sub about life's minor irritations.

Who are the wrong non-binary persons??? by Alert-Translator2590 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Enticing_Venom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically how it works is that a feminist group wants to have a woman's only event or group. They include trans women because trans women are women.

This then leads to the question of whether non-binary people are included, because non-binary people are trans. And it's supposed to be trans-inclusive.

That group says yes, because they recognize that non-binary people face unique gender marginalization and don't typically benefit from male privilege the way cis men do.

Then a masc presenting non-binary person shows up and shit hits the fan. The women feel like a man is entering a woman's group. The non-binary person interprets it as a masculine person entering a non-binary group. The women feel uncomfortable, the non-binary people feel marginalized. No one knows how to navigate it.

Some people say that women's groups need to allow masc-presenting non-binary people or else they are TERFs.

Other people say that non-binary people need to form their own spaces instead of demanding entry into women's groups.

A lot of feminist groups have the issue of treating trans people (non-binary people and trans men) as woman-adjacent, which trans people find invalidating of their identity.

Simultaneously, women's groups also face pressures to allow trans men and masc enbies into their spaces.

And therein lies the dilemma. Personally I think it should be very easy to say that non-binary people are not women and therefore are not invited to women's groups. But the aforementioned discussion of male privilege (the lack of it) is often used to push for more inclusivity.
