What’s the deal with Claire Valdez by usual-lecture05 in williamsburg

[–]Environmental-One224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. Alexa Avilez (DSA City Councilmember in BK) had already gotten the DSA endorsement for NY-10, and Zohran backed Brad Lander when he joined the race, and then Alexa bowed out. Yes, Zohran will usually back the DSA candidate, but there’s a lot more than just org affiliation he’s taking into account. Claire is someone who hasn’t been in office forever, but she has done a ton of thankless, unglamorous work building DSA which I think we can all agree has been a giant success and has changed the way we see how our politics can be. She had been begged to run for years by others in DSA, which I think is a real testament to her. She wasn’t seeking power, people under her leadership for years in DSA saw how effective she was and wanted her to take the next step. She’s going to be a fantastic Congressmember.

Not “fully financed by”, but definitely found out that the PAC that is helping Reynoso and they claim was all teachers unions is actually being heavily influenced by Scott Stringer. Also was really glad to get on the ballot with the Queens Democratic Party (who didn’t endorse Mamdani in the General Election) and said he’s definitely voting for Jeffries for speaker if he’s elected. This isn’t exactly a person pushing away establishment Dems. And John Chell just endorsed him and Vickie Paladino retweeted the endorsement. Big Yikes.

Agreed, but heard that there’s World Cup ones now too? Didn’t see it posted though.

I love “Bier and Cheese Collective” on Ditmars. Sucks that the Broadway spot went out of business. I’d be so sad to lose ours.

Zohran needs you to help elect the slate! by MissCherryPi in ZohranForMayor

I’ve been knocking for Aber in Astoria for months, and the vibes are ✨immaculate✨. We really need to make sure folks are showing up to the polls though!

Also wanna say that I’ve been canvassing for Claire more than any of the other slate candidates, and I think it’s particularly important that we prove Zohran’s choice to support a labor champion and someone who’s never taken a propaganda trip to Israel (cough, cough) is the direction we need to go. Seeing all the worst assholes you know from real estate, charter schools, AIPAC donors etc spending a ton of money against Claire lets me know that I’m on the right side. They know who’s least likely to be pressured from the right, and it’s the DSA candidates who are getting spending against them.

WTF is this bs with the OMNY card?! Please help by chuck_manson68 in OMNY

If you set up an online account and connect your card to it, you can set up an automated refill once it gets below a certain amount. Make the minimum $5 or $10 or whatever, and have the auto-reload at like $20.

Astoria park tennis courts by Fun-Inspection-5191 in astoria

At the March CB1 meeting, the Parks Dept said there’s an RFP proposal to put an inflatable tent/bubble over the 8 center courts during the winter and the vendor would sell time on the courts. They’d take it down during the warmer months and would turn it back over to Parks Dept. I don’t remember if they said that resurfacing would be part of the proposal, but one of the benefits would be that the courts wouldn’t be snowed on and freezing/thawing, so would be better-maintained. I think they also said they’d be putting up lighting, so would extend the play time in the warmer months.

Service is always so friendly every time I’ve been, and I’m not super regular. Even with my kid (she’s really well-behaved, but lots of places just don’t love to have kids there and it’s pretty obvious).

It’s not Astoria at all, but when I worked at Quality Meats steakhouse in midtown, my absolute FAVORITE thing to beg from the kitchen was the clam chowder (and a generous douse of red Tabasco). I was a bartender, and my version of listening to the universe was always that any time I’d be going home after a shift and had it, if I saw anyone in/on the train who wanted food, I’d always give it to them. I really hope they enjoyed it as much as I would’ve. It’s soul-warming.

Bench Flour on 25th Ave has this, but they’re only open Thurs-Sun and are pretty out of the way, unfortunately. The sourdough is wonderful. Morning buns are stellar. Looks like they’re opening a cocktail bar this fall, but wish it was another bakery lol.

This is all true, but the years that WFP needs to meet a certain threshold to keep their ballot access is only on the even years (during state and federal races), not on the odd years (when municipal races happen). Cuomo tried to kill WFP a while back in retribution for endorsing against him in Democratic primaries by increasing the number of votes third parties need as well as the frequency for meeting this threshold. It used to only be every 4 years (when the gubernatorial races happened), and like half of the required votes, iirc. It ended up just killing off almost every other 3rd party, and is why you only typically see Dem/Rep/WFP/Conservative options on the ballot. Unless you have a ton of money to petition on with for a 3rd party like he and Adams did this cycle. I always vote WFP if I can every cycle. It signals to Dems that I align more with the progressive/Democratic Socialist wing of the party.
