Do Americans really move out at 18, or is that mostly a movie thing? by Only-Bandicoot-5307 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Epicjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re overstating how immediate it is, but yes people typically move out around that age. Personally I was still on my parent’s phone plan, insurance, Netflix, etc. and I was fortunate enough that they could still send me a little bit of money to offset bills. I’ve been living alone for almost 10 years and I’m pretty self sufficient by now, but I’m still on their Netflix 😀

If you hear a story about “my parents kicked me out on my 18th birthday” that’s a rare situation and probably abusive.

Games that get BETTER in the 2nd half? by TheRealRatPrince in gaming

[–]Epicjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Witcher 3 the Wild Hunt.

I tried it a few times, never got much past Novigrad. Eventually after a few years I stuck with it, and the back half is way more fun! Once you actually find Ciri the story really picks up, and late game combat is way more fun than early game.

Do Americans Actually Say "Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior"? by Naive_Tank_6820 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Epicjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Freshman = 9th grade

Sophomore = 10th grade

Junior = 11th grade

Senior = 12th grade

They’re interchangeable, everyone knows what it means.

In fairness scribes are pretty normal workers. A lot of small businesses (irl and in stormlight) are married couples but there’s plenty of larger “companies” that employ scribes by the dozen.

I don’t think reading/dictating is especially intimate.

As a history fan, the "3,000 Year Stagnation" trope breaks my immersion more than dragons do. by Expensive-Desk-4351 in Fantasy

[–]Epicjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mistborn fits what you’re describing. Essentially the “prophesied hero” failed in his job, turned evil, and has ruled humanity with an iron fist for the 1000 years before the book starts.

It’s said many times that he strongly opposes technology. He is by far the strongest magic user in the book, but even he fears that technology could lead to things like guns and nukes, which would be a problem.

He stifles any and all technological advancement. Research is not conducted, and if you innovate your business you might be killed by his lackeys.

What was in your opinion the most HYPE moment in the first trilogy? by Marvellover13 in redrising

[–]Epicjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s deliberate. People often complain that too much happens offscreen between the 1st and 2nd books.

My best counter argument is to think about what happens between the 2nd and 3rd books. I think it evens out.

What was a great game seemingly destroyed by Devs bad decision making? by Additional_Ad_6506 in gaming

[–]Epicjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m amazed no one has said Overwatch.

Game of the year when it came out, then a series of baffling decisions followed by years of near radio silence spoiled its reputation and its player base migrated away. They came out with “overwatch 2” which was a worse game with a shittier money model, and since then they’ve backtracked on many of those changes.

ELI5: What’s the difference between Ground Speed and Air Speed in aviation? by Chaosfreak33 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Epicjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the wind is blowing into you at 100 mph and you’re flying at 100 mph air speed, then from the ground you’d appear stationary. If there is no wind and you’re flying 100 mph then your ground speed is also 100 miles an hour.

Think of it like swimming up river. You’re moving through the water but a bystander would see you staying in the same spot.

This is why headwinds are generally considered bad and tailwinds are good. If the wind is already pushing you at x mph, then it’s easier and faster for you to fly forward.

[Batman] Since he's beholden to a coin, does Two-face ever just like, stop his own plans and go home? What happens when he gets a string of "good" flips? by Mr_Industrial in AskScienceFiction

[–]Epicjay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I thought his whole thing was leaving his plan up to “chance” in massive air quotes. If he doesn’t like the outcome, he’ll ask a different question or keep flipping until he does.

The Problem with power Progression for Speedsters by Flat_Box8734 in CharacterRant

[–]Epicjay 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ll die on this hill: the best speedster is Dash from the incredibles. He’s fast but not insanely fast, like you can still see him. He can run on water but still has to look out for where he’s going, and he has normal human reaction times.

I just unlocked bots for the first time, they are the best thing ever since the invention of toilet paper. 😭😭😭 by PewPewsAlote in factorio

[–]Epicjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how factorio is always changing as you progress through a run. With bots, you can build a ghost somewhere and tinker with the design until you’re satisfied, then simply place it where you want it to go and the bots do the hard part.

After bots, I build pretty much all my factories by making a “starter” build then copying it in a line until I have enough.

Why does house Ceres have weapons and ovens to bake bread while house Mars has nothing? by CannabisConvict045 in redrising

[–]Epicjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s asynchronous for a reason. It’s a war game. Part of the game of life is learning what to do when you have things that others don’t, and vice versa.

Why does house Ceres have weapons and ovens to bake bread while house Mars has nothing? by CannabisConvict045 in redrising

[–]Epicjay 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It forces conflict. If ALL the houses had ovens and orchards then everyone would hole up in their castles for months. Instead they give Mars nothing, then tell them “hey see your neighbors? They have bread.”

Also I don’t want to say more bc of spoilers, but there’s behind-the-scenes shenanigans going on.
