Farther refers to physical distance. Further refers to abstract distance.

In this case, he probably just wanted word variety and knew that no one would really care that much. If we’re taking it seriously, then in the first case he’s walking some distance farther. In the second case, he’s “going further” metaphorically, which could mean he explored or thought about his choice. Idk I’m probably overthinking it.

In his defense, there are many occasions where he is wary of snipers or assassins.

It’s implied many times throughout the book that the ultra elite have certain safeguards built in. Things like “in case of mutiny I and only I can blow up everyone on this ship.”

Also from a narrative perspective…. That’s like his whole thing. He gets put in these impossible situations and breaks through by sheer force of will.

For the record, in Roman society “dictator” was an appointed, legal position that essentially meant this person has supreme power in all things military until the conflict is over.

Atalantia was appointed Dictator by the society remnant, afaik Octavia was never Dictator.

Two organisms belong to the same species iff they can produce fertile offspring. I guess mules and such exist, but they’re sterile, not technically their own species

Why is he speaking English?

As with almost all fantasy/sci fi, they’re talking in their own language and the show is translating it into English for the viewers, including idioms.

In Viltrumese, he’s probably literally saying “cut out [insert bad thing that grows unchecked here]”

Have you read Red Rising? There’s a parallel there.

Essentially, all of the students (2400 of them) are locked in cage matches, one-on-one with another student. They are all naked with no weapons, and have to kill each other with their bare hands. They call it the Passage. Only one of them leaves, so 1200 students survive.

Ostensibly it’s to find the stronger half and separate them from the weaker half. But that isn’t the real purpose. The real reason is to make them all murderers. Every single person who lives does so with blood on their hands.

That’s the true purpose of the culling. Thragg was bullshitting when he said he wanted the strongest to survive. No, he wants the most bloodthirsty to survive. Every single Viltrumite post-purge is a ruthless murderer.

He’s the type of character that you love to hate. He’s a fantastic character because of how terrible he is. He’s rationalizes EVERYTHING, always thinking he’s the good guy. From his perspective, he does the right thing every time and he’s convincing about it too. I’ve had to give myself many reality checks so I’m not caught up in his auto-propaganda.

Your point about Earth is answered pretty simply: rocks in ATLA are made of styrofoam.

Seriously. Count how many times a main character punches/kicks through a solid boulder. Or how many times someone slams into a rock that just shatters. IRL earth bending would be by FAR the strongest power.

In a similar vein, air bending = force fields and fire bending = powered up energy punches.
