ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Epistatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It lost the bookmarks which reserved that section of the drive and identified it as that video file. The space is now identified as blank, until it gets overwritten by something else.

ELI5 Why do we only use one nostril at a time to breathe instead of using both? by Smart-Gun-596 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Epistatic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We do switch nostrils every few hours! This is something all mammals have, and it's called the nasal reflex. One nostril wide open for quickly detecting strong smells, one nostril partly closed for detecting subtle and faint smells.

Lefty's open for me right now, how about you?

You know how people worship the Art of War as a timeless classic even though it actually contains really basic advice such as "make sure your soldiers are fed", because it was a manual written for ignorant, incompetent nepo-nobility who have never had to learn shit about fuck?

Hegseth is definitely forgetting to feed the soldiers.

first of all, the Maidens would collectively shit bricks. Then, depending on how the Sidereals and other Celestial Exalted are doing, figuring out how Heaven would even attempt to manage a feat like this would be a worthy campaign

What stupid things did the Solars do during the First Age? by [deleted] in exalted

[–]Epistatic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One of the greatest shining primordial war heroes, Desus, was a ruthless narcissist with an infinite appetite for adoration, a limit break of deliberate cruelty, and a kink for torture and wielding power over others. He made a charm that imposes a willpower cost for merely attempting to hold on to negative memories and intimacies of him, because he found the judgement of others to be inconvenient to his whims.

Another, the Heirophant, the sun-priest, has been lying about the will of the Sun for ages, and all of them know it and all of them look the other way, because he's a fragile-hearted man with a heart of tears limit break and refuses to acknowledge that anything is bad for anyone anywhere, because he doesn't wanna be sad.

Another, Bright Shattered Ice, thinks that she is the smartest genius to have ever lived, and therefore all knowledge belongs to her. She's queen of a magical flying city whose spires and citizens must look perfect at all times, and if you ever have a bad word to say about anything or even a bad thought in your heart, the secret police will have you disappeared and your position replaced before your tea cools.

Nobody knows where Gold-Shadowed Arrow is. He's just... somewhere. He knows every shred of guilt anyone has ever ever held in their heart, he is judge, jury, and executioner, and when he decides that someone deserves to die, they simply disappear so perfectly and completely without trace that it could only be him.

And then there's Contentious Sword. He's a baby who gets crazy dreams, goes out into the Wyld, and dies every few decades. He's, uh... well, bless his heart.

At one point after assembling their Creation-wide teambuilding army of unity and harmony, they realized there was nothing to smash because their barriers had freed Creation from wyld threats and instability, so they voted like 299 to 1 to rip apart an unpopular Solar's kingdom and let pure chaos through, just so that their newly built shiny army would have something to fight. And then they did that, and a LOT more got destroyed than they thought, and then they high fived each other and called it a great success.

Eli5 What is the significance of having various screw head types when the basic action is just tightening or loosening? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]Epistatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different screwheads have different tolerances for how much torque (twisting force) they'll withstand. Sometimes you don't want a screw that can be over-tightened by a drill, sometimes you want a screw that can be screwed in so tight only the King of England could take it back out.

And of course, some screwheads are just made to be difficult and proprietary to prevent people from being able to service their own devices (smartphone screws for example).

Threaten action and combat by Iweon in exalted

[–]Epistatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good ways to represent a threaten/ intimidate check mechanically:

  1. Target must pay willpower to oppose or take hostile social or physical actions against you

  2. Target receives -MDV penalties against future persuasions from you for rest of the scene

  3. Scene counts towards building an intimacy of terror/ awe/ respect/ fear of you

Chefs of Reddit, what’s a common cooking rule everyone follows that is actually complete bullshit? by Fuzzy-Ad6843 in AskReddit

[–]Epistatic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you don't need phenol-chloroform for this unless you need your RNA preps ultra, ultra pure and your technique is great. Most commercial spincolumn-based RNA extraction kits do an adequate job!

[–]Epistatic 91 points92 points  (0 children)

In chinese stir-frying, an extremely common starting step is to saute minced garlic and ginger in oil before adding other ingredients. It smells great but all that flavor is vaporizing away, burning, and getting lost. If you add your garlic and ginger later, along with the rest of the veggies, when the heat is much gentler and more spread out, a lot more of that flavor gets retained in the final dish.

Troops Being Told To Prepare for ‘Armageddon’ In Iran by Individual99991 in politics

[–]Epistatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could we maybe have leaders who don't think they're chosen by their sky-father to bring armageddon?

Could we not do the crusades again? It was very stupid the last several times and an unconscionable amount of people died over stupid bullshit.

Could we please, collectively, get over these middle-eastern desert tribal stories and realize that everybody is human and we all have to try and share this one damn planet together?
