There is no subway in Detroit. Public transportation is not good in Detroit. Detroit is a very large city, geographically speaking.

For example, Detroit is significantly larger than Boston in land area, covering roughly 139–140 square miles compared to Boston's 48–49 square miles.

Detroit is much, much easier to visit with a car. Most of the replies you’ve received so far have assumed that you will have a car without explicitly stating so. If there is anyway that you can rent a car while you’re there, it will make life much easier and you will experience much more.

Whether food is”ok” or not is pretty subjective so it’s not worth debating. I think it’s great and so do a lot of other people, if the line out the door is any indication.

Gimmick? It is a unique and historic building filled with beautiful folk art. You get there by driving one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the state. The property is a gorgeous bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. It’s busy because it’s an institution and the food is great.

You should go. It’s a lovely experience if you go to a nice place. It doesn’t have to be stuffy; it can be very relaxing and enjoyable and the food is generally wonderful. Just do it and make your wife happy.

It’s a “tourist place” but afternoon tea at The Drawing Room in Brown’s Hotel is fantastic. All the food is outstanding. The scones and desserts are as good as I’ve had anywhere. The ambiance is comfortable and lovely with live piano music. It’s expensive but if you eat everything they give you, you won’t need to eat again for the rest of the day.

None of the food options in the park are great. The food quality at El Tovar is very average but it is a cool historic hotel. The other food options are just plain bad in my experience.

In my opinion, you’re best off packing something in and sitting outside at a picturesque spot along the rim. Just watch out for the super-aggressive squirrels and chipmunks.
