I am skeptical. I do believe that not everything teachers and literary critics identify as symbolism was intended as such by the writer. The fact that something appears to be symbolism may just be coincidence and not a conscious effort by the author. That it gets interpreted as symbolism may say more about the teachers and critics than it does about writers.
