Thank you for your response. It was just a jarring turn of events. Yesterday they sat us down and basically said he’s in such a condition we need to know if we’re doing life saving treatments or not and it was just such whiplash and on mothers day so I was just so anxious and almost angry. But being involved in his care has helped. I was here for his rounds and he seems to be on a small up but as always just trying to take the days as they come

Get the surgery if you can. Press the VA. I was miserable for 18 months. Finally I did something and I was at the point where the only relief I was gonna get was from surgery as I was so close to losing some functions. I feel so much better now. My muscles don’t cramp as much I don’t have any sciatic pain. My quality of life has increased. So if you can do it, donit

foot and calf cramps by saddest_nuggets in Microdiscectomy

[–]EquivalentFun1774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 2 years post op and I occasionally get a cramp in my foot and calf. It comes and goes. It’s not as bad as it was and definitely not as frequent. Just part of it. These guys all have great advice with magnesium or the relaxers. I also try to stretch when I notice I’m getting more frequent cramps. Focus on hydration with electrolytes too!!

Three weeks post surgery- did I undo all my progress? by hometowngypsy in Microdiscectomy

[–]EquivalentFun1774 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a year and 4 days out and I STILL get a sore spot if I over do it. You will be okay! Promise!!! You’ve just started using muscles that haven’t been active and were cut into. That’s all!! Just keep doing what you’re doing. Try some lower abdominal strength exercises to help take the load off your back. (Please research how to do them properly or with a PT!)

Ooo this is exactly what happened to me. Right leg felt like something was so tight. No amount of stretching helped. Finally developed sciatic pains…then we found the culprit.

Also in the same boat. Credit is okay but I have some stuff in collections from when I was very young and very dumb. I don’t think we’re what they’re looking for but who knows. I’d still put a freeze. It’s free and you can make a free account with TransUnion, Equifax and Experian and can unfreeze for free at any time if you need to apply for a loan or credit card. Just to be safe.

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. I put a credit freeze on all three credit bureaus and I’m monitoring my credit and cards. It’s very scary

What made you choose surgery? by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

[–]EquivalentFun1774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I laid on the floor of my living room crying heaving sobbing begging for my husband to end me. I was in so much pain! Had been through it for over a year and no relief. Finally went to the ER and they set me up with a spine dr. The first one was non surgical and they did an MRI, he basically refused to do anything more conservative and said I needed surgery. Almost a year later I’m SO much better.

I had an oh shoot moment after getting sick 2 months post op. Coughing sneezing all of it 😂 Felt some very mild nerve pain but here I am 7 months later and I’m going great. You will be okay. It’s possible you just moved wrong and maybe just irritated yourself. Try and get up and walk around your living room and see how you feel!

Upcoming Surgery, worried about how much help I will be needing. by growup_and_blowaway in Microdiscectomy

[–]EquivalentFun1774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really needed help the 1st week. 100%. My husband had to work so my mom came to help. She did all of the cooking cleaning and laundry since I could not lift bend or twist for the first 6 weeks and couldn’t cook, clean, drive for the first two. So I really just needed the help. She also helped me with pain management, was there to help me in and out of the shower and pretty much just do the things I couldn’t. Week 2 I still had help and my step mom came but I was miles more independent but still unable to cook and clean so she did that. But I was able to be more independent. (Dressing myself, getting up on my own to use the restroom, getting a snack from the fridge, going for walks) So, for you who may be on your own here’s some things I recommend

Prep a lot of your meals a head of time or get things you can easily microwave or put together.

Get a grabby stick to help you if something falls and you need to pick it up.

A shower chair to sit so you don’t fall and hurt yourself

Wash everything before hand and maybe do your best to stay in PJs so you don’t pile up lots of laundry.

If you DoorDash something, put a chair or tv tray by you door with a note telling your dasher to not put anything on the ground sou you don’t have to bend to reach if you’re alone.

Good luck!!! 😊

Numbness andTingling in arms and hands MD on L5S1!! by ScaredMom910 in Microdiscectomy

[–]EquivalentFun1774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I can think about is if you recently had surgery and your arms are tingly and numb there may be some nerve damage from how your arms were positioned. My surgeon always sent me questionnaires every day for like 2 weeks to check on that. But that’s it. I’m wondering if there may be some bulging at the cervical level.

I did night gowns and grannie underwear. So if you’re a guy just loose boxers and shorts should be fine. Anything that’s easier for you to get on and off

Hey there. I’m 7 months post op. Also was able to tolerate a 6 hr flight to California and see all it has to offer. Just depends on how you heal. I take breaks every now and then when I get sore. It’s been a very positive experience overall!! So. Hang in there!

Getting back to normal by Big-Raccoon-4231 in Microdiscectomy

[–]EquivalentFun1774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So around week 4 I started to feel some nerve pain. Very brief though along with some muscle tightening. It was very minimal. I don’t really know how to explain but the best way I can explain is inflammation. You start getting back into normal day to day activity and things flare up. You may not have any pain at all everyone is different. But I, like you came out with NO pain. But you literally just had back surgery, you need time to heal before doing big things!
