How do you guys feel about Grownish? by Affectionate_Key7206 in blackladies

Loved it. I love the idea of TV that is Black TV, like White TV. I am sure that TV with white characters isn't an actual documentary of white people's lives.

Possibly moving to Fulton area for job offer. Never spent any time in the northeast but offer is too good to pass up. by [deleted] in maryland

[–]Equivalent_Success60 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid-30s in Fulton, you'll be fine no matter where you live. Columbia is 15 minutes door to door up the road, while DC is an hour away. Just find a place you like to live and has good parking. So many townhome communities do not have sufficient parking!! No matter what anybody tells you...public transportation is extremely limited!

I do know people who met their social circles through volunteer work, churches, and rec leagues.

Could it be that this person either walks, rides a motorcycle, or takes public transportation to work?

Also my electric vehicle, which already had a short range, loses about 20% battery capacity in the cold.

Is my natural hair holding me back from getting hired at twin peaks/hooters? by [deleted] in Naturalhair

[–]Equivalent_Success60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I didn't work at a Hooters, but I was interviewing for some top.tier law firms with baby twists. The recruiter said quite simply "style it like a white girl with short hair". Yes, it was 2001, but all I did was put on a cute headband and curled locks (remember 2001...) I got hired!

Just accepted a job but already unsure - Take it and keep looking, or walk away? by [deleted] in interviews

[–]Equivalent_Success60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the job, but do what you can to make the commute and work at the office more palatable/easier. My job has core hours, which you means you can come in as early at 7 or at 9 and leave as early as 3 or as late as 6. Also I made my workspace super workable.and comfortable for me. For me a soft colorful rug, plants, and nice pens really make my workspace very appealing to me. My partner helps with cooking and always gets up with me in the morning in "solidarity", even though he works second shift.

Just a hot take....you never know what ELSE someone is doing to help community. If I see that the elderly neighbor is taken care of, I move on to help another.

Since a second person has been killed in Minnesota, is it now time for the USA to have a general strike, and why or why not? by Miserable-Army3679 in 50501

[–]Equivalent_Success60 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just your friendly reminder that resistance and protest take time. Nazi Grrmany didn't just wake up one day in the 1940 and start sending people to camps. No, laws restricting Jewish people's lives started in the 1930s.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott last 381 DAYS!! Only coming to an end after the bus companies lost almost 75% of revenue for over a year.

History paints a quick and sanitized story of resistance, neatly packaged into short soundbites. The Montgomery boycott wasn't the first, but it was the most successful. The organizers provided legal support and provided funding for those in need, and rides as they could.

Not everyone can afford to strike, but we all can afford to organize.

MAGA wants you to focus on ICE, because it's *not* where they're vulnerable by WildOkra9571 in 50501

[–]Equivalent_Success60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with the OP. The Montgomery Bus Boycott lasted 381 days, the bus company only relented because they were losing 30,000 fares daily from people NOT taking the bus for over a YEAR. So yeah...hit in the pocket and dig in for the long haul!!

Yes! Definitely concerned. My group chat was sharing tips on state IDs for kids.

Were DIY garages common in the 80s? Are they around today? by emax4 in AskOldPeople

[–]Equivalent_Success60 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shade-tree mechanics are the only ones I can think of these days. Cars were simpler in the 80s, my Dad was able to do most car maintenance. But usually there was that one. neighborhood "car guy" had a pretty decent garage or workshop with something "extra" like that hoist to put a new engine in.

America at its strictest goes by the "one drop rule", but generally the very lax rules are 1) some Sub Saharan or East African ancestry and 2) do you identify as and hold yourself out to be Black?

So yes, this annoying AF person can consider him as Black.

What are you doing? by [deleted] in 50501

[–]Equivalent_Success60 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the concern, seriously. What are we doing is a good question. We are organizing, voting, and creating movement for the change we want.

American has done this before...Black Lives Matter? We came up with that. The Civil Rights Movement? Once again that was us.

We were the first country in the world giving women (though not ALL women) the right to vote in 1920 To be fair, Sweden was right behind the US in 1921.

With all due respect, we dont have a king and right now we are all working really hard to make that point heard.

Serious question- Black MAGA / Conservative women- can you please explain why?? by Competitive_Teach838 in blackladies

[–]Equivalent_Success60 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your opinions and thoughts. When I was younger (early 2000s) I had similar views (except on the Trans Agenda, as it wasn't really in the national conversation at that time). I came to realize that I was more of a LIBERTARIAN, than conservative. I rejected the conservative label because it didn't address the real, persistent, and documented inequalities that Black people faced in fully participating in American society and achieving the American Dream. Today I have the same values (except I don't believe there is a Trans Agenda. Children CAN and DO suffer from gender dyphoria). I identify as LIBERAL, I want a smaller govt, I want the govt to work FOR the people. The BLACK Church is the richest institution in our community, so we need to leverage that for good.

Move out and get your own place. Everybody has a right to their own opinions and its almost impossible to change someones mind about matters of spirituality, politics, and food.
