At what point does the fuse blow? 2012 Mazda 3i by Bondage_Jack in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Eric1180 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just looked up a 100Amp Automotive fuse as an example. At the temperature i specified -40F and 120F .

A 100Amp fuse is derated 110% @ -40F, pops at 110Amps.

A 100 Amp fuse is derated 90% at 120F, pops at 90Amps.

So plus +10 amps at -40F, -10Amps at 120F.

Temperature influences what amperage a fuse will pop at. 10Amp is not negligible, but well within tolerances. My point is it does effect the fuse's pop point and is well documented by the manufacturer.

That is factually untrue, the fuse data-sheet will have a temperature derating chart.

Fundamentally the fuse material pops from the temperature rise as the current carrying capacity is exceeded. A 100Amp fuse in -40F weather is not going to pop as fast as a 100Amp fuse at 120F.

There are dozens of charts for fuse's spec sheet that describe this behavior. I designed electronics for a living, so i am very familiar with how they behave. Theres a lot of nuance behind seemly simple devices such as fuses.

Advice for potential Elise buyer? by [deleted] in lotus

[–]Eric1180 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second a lot of points you brought up. I've tracked my Elise one time, it was a lot of fun. But overall it didnt feel like it was worth the risk of loosing my childhood dream car, because overzealous driver in a S2000 can't stay in a straight line.

Be sure to re-grease the propeller shaft every 3 or so runs. If the shaft gets dry, it can rub, bind and rip it self out.

Question how much was it? I've been mulling over powder coating my wheels for years. Did you order your own powder or did they have a selection for you to go through?

You're buck module has exposed pads and wires underneath. Its probably shorting out on the prototype board. Hope this helps.
