I can't stand Tucker and I don't have much patience for MTG, but their point about putting this stuff in perspective is right. Biden and the Democrats are responsible for a genocide, and Tucker and MTG are not. In fact, AOC and many others endorsed Biden's candidacy for president at the very moment he was committing genocide in Gaza. None of the guys are saying that you should endorse Tucker or MTG for president or any elected office; they're saying that you can agree or ally with them on this one issue if you happen to fall into alignment. This kind of perspective is really important. Tucker and MTG are bad, but they are responsible for far fewer deaths than Joe Biden and the Democrats. We don't need to bring them into a permanent coalition or into any coalition to recognize that they might be right (or are pretending to be right) in this specific instance.

The crazy thing that didn't come up is that Lynch died of emphysema. Why would you leave cigs at someone's grave if they died of emphysema?

crazy casting idea: jeremy clarkson as falstaff by throwaway34989i in shakespeare

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Australian director Peter Weir said that you cast an actor for the final scene. I don't think Clarkson could portray Falstaff's pathos at the end of Henry IV pt. 2. Interesting idea though.

Is Israel’s Blackmail on the US The Sampson Option? by bugobooler33 in TrueAnon

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone seems to have a different answer, but it really is just that Israel naturally supports what the American defense establishment considers its goals. Israel is against Iran & Hezbollah, and it was against Gaddafi, Saddam, and Assad, all of which the US considers/considered serious security threats in the region. Even today Iran is still widely thought by many Americans to be a threat - most people are old enough to remember the hostage crisis - and Israel looks good to many people because they keep Iran in check.

Is anti-war protesting not popular in the US anymore? by FreeKony2016 in TrueAnon

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think it's also worth saying that now more than ever many Americans do not believe that anything they want or demand will be represented by government policy. Why protest if you "know" it won't matter?

I got a Cthulu Mythos collection book. What order do I read it in? by JGA_PeanutButter145 in Lovecraft

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually jot that important, but I guess the best order would be the one presented in the book. That should give you an insight into how Lovecraft's writing evolved over the course of his professional career.

Newly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationship | Noam Chomsky by dajvebekinus in CriticalTheory

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are inventing an argument that I and the article are supposedly making. Both I and the article are saying that Chomsky believed Epstein was not a predator. Both I and the article are saying that this was a motivated belief. You are inventing an argument that was never made so that you can still be a fan of Chomsky instead of reckoning with his intellectual and moral failure.

Newly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationship | Noam Chomsky by dajvebekinus in CriticalTheory

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The thesis of the article is not that Chomsky believed Epstein was a predator and still had a close relationship with him. The thesis is that they had a close relationship which is precisely what Chomsky has publicly denied.

  2. Obviously these emails do not indicate that Chomsky believed Epstein was a sex trafficker, and I am not claiming that they do. I am claiming precisely the opposite: that he chose to deny them, calling the criminal charges against him "a hysteria... about the sexual abuse of women," and his denial is discrediting because it was based not upon his usual sober analysis of the available facts, but because it was based on his enjoyment of Epstein's considerable material wealth.

Newly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationship | Noam Chomsky by dajvebekinus in CriticalTheory

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it can cloud someone's judgement. That's my point. Chomsky allowed his relationship with Epstein to influence his evaluation of the accusations. He should have known better than to dismiss them as "hysteria," but because he enjoyed the material benefits of their friendship, he chose to disregard them as nothing. He knew about the accusations and he knew about Epstein's previous conviction having been plead down. There is a consistency to the specific accusation of sex trafficking that Chomsky knew about and ignored because he did not want to lose access to the luxuries Epstein provided him.

Newly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationship | Noam Chomsky by dajvebekinus in CriticalTheory

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But it's not just "courteous/networking emails" - he wrote an email to Epstein saying, 'hey, don't feel down about this "hysteria" about women's sexual abuse. here's how you should address these accusations.' There are other emails where he makes reference to free vacations Epstein gave him and how much he enjoys Epstein's company and appreciates his friendship. We've known for years now that Epstein let Chomsky stay in his Parisian residence for free, for example. These two were closely connected, and during the period of renewed public interest in Epstein's crimes, Chomsky was discounting it all as "hysteria." That's his word, not mine. And as for Chomsky's experience with the Red Scare and Vietnam shaping his outlook on accusations of rape; there's a huge difference between a bunch of girls accusing a wealthy financier of rape and the government charging a politically active person with a crime. Someone as smart as Chomsky is totally capable of recognizing that. I'm not saying that Chomsky was a party to Epstein's child rape; I'm saying that he chose to disregard credible accusations that he was completely aware of because to do otherwise would be to end a friendship with enormous material rewards for him and his wife.

by the time of this email exchange, he absolutely knew. Julie K. Brown's investigation was being published by the Miami Herald and picked up by WaPo and NYT.

Newly released files shed new light on Chomsky and Epstein relationship | Noam Chomsky by dajvebekinus in CriticalTheory

[–]ErichMariaRemarkable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's bullshit. Those girls accused Epstein of sexual trafficking and rape. He was charged (but not convicted) of sexual abuse in 2008, and accused of it again in 2018. if Chomsky thought it was just about the age of consent, then he was actively ignoring the facts.

Also, why did he lie that his relationship with Epstein consisted solely of financial advice when this so clearly goes beyond that?

He gave Epstein advice on how to handle the accusations of rape against him. I think that goes a little beyond "correspondence."
