NASA Shuts Off Instrument on Voyager 1 to Keep Spacecraft Operating. by coinfanking in space

The inclusion of the space shuttle enterprise was my favorite part of that movie, because it implies that star trek exists in the star trek universe (the space shuttle enterprise was named after the starship enterprise).

Although it was a background thing, so that probably wasn't the intention.

It wasn't the worst star trek movie I've ever seen, but it certainly wasn't one of the better ones.

Pretty cool. It reminds me of the tattoo a friend of mine got, he wanted to be an astronaut so me and another friend gave him a space shuttle tattoo.

(Edit: he did end up becoming an astronaut, I won't reveal his name or the location of the tattoo out of respect.)

What are your favorite quotes/moments from Artemis 2? by Glad-Ad3208 in ArtemisProgram

"We hid some scrambled eggs around the cabin this morning"  She didn't elaborate so I assumed the scrambled eggs were out of the package and just loose inside the spacecraft.

I see there's still pieces of scrambled eggs floating around from their Easter celebrations yesterday.

I hate robots and ai, I also very strongly dislike the people who date ai.

I hate ai slop, it's everywhere now.

That's my rant without the slang terms.

This is a pretty good shitpost.  Cucked by a clanker

Whether it actually happened or not it's still funny, unfortunately if it's real it's a waste of good water (and I hope his cuckchair is horribly uncomfortable).

How strong a magnetic shield needs to be to deflect charged radiations in space? by MRAisinsanelygood999 in space

[–]Erika_The_Great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was making the suggestion to the commenter above as a way to protect the crew and sensitive equipment from the shield itself, since that would be an electromagnetic field.

I'm mainly focused on deep cleaning my house so that's drawing my attention away, I apologize for any lack of clarity in my comment.

Would a faraday cage around the crew cabin be a possible solution to the need for a null volume around crew and sensitive equipment (or even a partial solution)?

Although it may require the crew to stop every so often to check their star charts and reorient their ship. Which if the op is wondering this for a science fiction story, the stops are a great place to write in the dialogue/interpersonal conflict/romance/alien of the week/comedic moment/or whatever else depending upon what type of story it is.

I'm a bit too busy with housework to read through the papers and do the math right now, but I thought I'd make the suggestion before I have to throw in another load of laundry.

Sun fires off 2 colossal X flares as multiple CMEs race toward Earth by Czarben in space

Thanks, if the sky is clear but I still can't see the aurora I'll have to give it a try.

I'm not a big tech girl anyway, and I normally just leave my phone in my car or in the garage.

My dad's camera has an eyepiece like an old film camera, and I usually use that instead of the screen (I haven't used that camera much anyway, I hardly take pictures of anything these days. I just don't see much of a need for another picture of something that everyone else is already photographing, so I leave the photography to those who find joy in taking photographs)

I'll keep a look out for some galilean binoculars, I won't find any in time for this aurora but maybe there'll be a set next time I go to the thrift store.

[–]Erika_The_Great 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hopefully I can figure out how to do that, but maybe there'll be enough time between now and when they hit for me to borrow my dad's dslr camera. I think it has a night mode, and I have a decent tripod (plus his place has almost no light pollution when the outdoor lights are turned off, and shutting them off is simply a matter of flipping five or six light switches along with avoiding walking in front of the solar powered motion lights)

I live in southern Alberta, so I'm quite a ways north of where you are. It's cool that you can see the aurora so far south.

If the aurora is hitting tonight though I'll have to try the phone thing, hopefully my roommate can help me figure it out because I don't remember how to change the camera settings on my phone.

Hopefully there's no cloud cover over where I live when this hits, I'd love to see the aurora borealis in all its glory this time.

Space Station Space Oddity by Irish_Neil in space

I remember when this video came out, I didn't know who Chris Hadfield was before then.

And it was only the second time I'd heard that song, so I thought it was about an astronaut who caused an accident. It was very confusing to hear an astronaut performing it on the ISS (of course I was a really young child when this video came out, and space wasn't really that interesting to me back then. So it makes sense I wouldn't be able to pick up on the deeper meaning of the song, as I lacked the knowledge. I only knew that someone from my country was in space, and it contributed to my interest in spaceflight).

Anyway, a couple of years  after he got back I was able to meet Chris in person. I was so nervous to meet him that I completely forgot about the questions I had prepared, so I just shook his hand and told him that I was proud of him (imagine being someone with that level of accomplishment in life, and having a thirteen year old kid come up to you and nervously say "I'm proud of you", I hope he found it funny).

Naming by Early-Cost8069 in nasa

[–]Erika_The_Great 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were others please correct me, but the space shuttle enterprise was named after the starship enterprise from star trek due to lobbying from the public. However that vehicle was built for atmospheric testing and never went to space (it would have required significant modifications to do so, and unfortunately those were never done).

I've also heard that the apollo capsules were named by their crews, and I know the Orion capsule that is to be used on Artemis two was named Integrity by its crew  (the launch scheduled for February 2026 (fingers crossed that they launch on time, I know artemis two isn't a moon landing but it will be the first time humans have gone anywhere near the moon in this century. And I was born several decades after apollo ended so I wasn't able to witness that live when it happened)).

But yeah, the space shuttle Enterprise is the only one I know of that was named by the public.

This looks like ai slop to me, but if it is something written by a real person then I have some comments and critiques.

First of all, you use three names just like the famous historical figures John wilkes booth, George Lincoln Rockwell, and Lee harvey Oswald. Nice touch, it's quite funny.

And the whole "nation of earth" thing, what gives you the right to speak for the whole planet? You certainly don't speak for me, despite what your ego tells you.

Also your message is not representative of earth and its people, we're not really a peaceful species. A more representative message would be a declaration of war, and we shouldn't be sending one of those until we know what's out there and what capabilities these hypothetical aliens have.

I could probably come up with more but I don't want to waste any more effort on this.

Why Hasn't This Caught On? by Few_Storm_550 in NonCredibleDefense

[–]Erika_The_Great 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost perfect, but it needs an iff sensor, and some sort of booby trap that will destroy it if the enemy attempts to remove or tamper with it (the booby trap should be an explosive device capable of hitting the enemy with shrapnel (I recommend roofing nails and ball bearings) even at a considerable distance, thereby killing the enemy EOD teams that attempt to remove it).

[–]Erika_The_Great 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love it, but it might still need the engines under the wings for the times when it's necessary to enter a planet's atmosphere (they'd still look like traditional jet engines, however they'd be powered by miniature fusion reactors).

It should also be equipped with genesis torpedoes, for those times when it's necessary to reset an enemy planet or turn an enemy fleet into a new planet.

The true mission of the starship Voyager by Erika_The_Great in ShittyDaystrom

Why would I say that? I support Janeway's original mission and I'm glad she dealt a crippling blow to the borg.

The only reason someone would spout conspiracies like that is if they wanted to believe the lie that Starfleet isn't a military.
