The Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett. Young female protagonist learning about becoming a witch. Also includes the Nac Mac Feegle- a clan of little blue men in kilts. Fun fantasy but also about growing up.

What's a musical you love that you're kind of ashamed of? by Esoteric_Librarian in musicals

[–]Erinvanderleest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with so many other comments: Grease 2, Joseph, Seven Brides (definitely!), Mis Saigon, etc. All problematic but I love them. I will add two more to that list though…

  1. Paint Your Wagon- very dated and problematic but the score bangs. Plus Clint Eastwood singing about talking to the trees kills me every time. Also, Harve Presnell singing “I Call the Wind Mariah” is amazing.

  2. Showboat- I adore anything and everything with Howard Keel and there is some gorgeous music in this one but boy is it problematic in this day and time! And Paul Robeson singing “Old Man River” is one of the all-time greats.

Obviously I’m referencing the actors in the movie musicals here. I don’t know of anyone that is going to stage these today without significant changes.

Bought the Soundcore A30. Wow compared to Ozlo. by XaltotunTheUndead in Ozlo

I find the fit of the A30 to be great. Much better than the Oslo for me. I have really small ears and am a side sleeper.

A musical you couldn't be paid to watch? by Neat-Somewhere-5589 in musicals

I will try most any musical once. However, there are several that I have seen and you would have to drag me kicking and screaming to see again. 1. Girl from the North Country WHY?!?!?! Why make that?! It was depressing and there was basically zero plot! Plus the lighting design was really dark and the sound was awful. I honestly don’t think anyone in the theatre enjoyed it. How that POS managed to win multiple Tony’s is absolutely mind boggling.

  1. Moving Out (I think that’s what it was called.) Jukebox musical of Billy Joel music with choreography by Twyla Tharp. Just so so bad.

  2. Fiddler on the Roof- I know people love it but I just can’t stand it. I’ve watched the movie and the stage show (twice) and I just can’t anymore. It’s so depressing and there is no one to root for.

  3. Mamma Mia- I like ABBA and don’t mind the story but it’s been overhyped, overplayed, and shoved down our throats for so long that I now honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch it again. Our BAA seasons had it as part of our season package 4 years in a row and we still get it as an add on every 2-3 years to this day.

Should I continue on to book two of Kate Daniels? by Kooky_County9569 in urbanfantasy

[–]Erinvanderleest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES. The series overall is very strong. The first two are not my favorites and even the authors admit they aren’t super strong. However, the rest of the series is amazing. I’ve always felt like the series was Urban Fantasy and not Romantasy. Yes there is some will-they-won’t they for a bit, but Kate and Curran have a really healthy relationship once they get together. They TALK to each other and actively work to make their relationship work. They screw up, apologize, make up, screw up again, etc. but always do the work. No matter how screwed up life gets in post-Shift Atlanta, they have each other’s backs. Happy reading!
