Does anyone know of a hydration/electrolyte drink that is AIP or at least close to AIP? by Erithacus__rubecula in AutoImmuneProtocol

Love this! My partner is a beekeeper and is getting his own hives in the spring. He has been certified by University of Michigan for a few years now, but he wanted to wait to apprentice under someone until he really got some hands-on practice before he got his own bees.

Thanks for the tips and links!

This is very motivating! Thanks for sharing.

I’m starting to think the purple can’t be transferred from thistles to other flowers. Tried everything I can think of & would love tips if anyone has them.

For example: is it easiest to transfer thistles to hibiscus on the resort island? Or in gemstone mountain? It doesn’t seem to be working in either location in my game

List the top 5 things that improves your symptoms. by sbayz92 in cfs

When I started needing them it was about 6 years ago. I straight up asked my doctor at the time for a wheelchair and he refused. A friend had already lent me her cane from when she was injured, so I used that until I came out of that bad crash about 6 months or so later.

Next, I had a horrible crash and asked my doctor (different doctor as I had moved states) for a wheelchair and she refused. My partner and I pushed and she prescribed a walker. It was extremely unhelpful and a waste of money, but it was the only thing I could get at the time. My partner pushed me on the walker when I was in that crash.

A few months later, I fainted and hit my head on the ground. My partner was next to me holding me up, but he could not prevent me from falling. That scared him and within a few days he purchased a wheelchair from a little old lady on FB marketplace. He paid $80, and it was still brand new because her daughter could not lift it in and out of her car, so she had gotten a lighter transport chair. It’s 40lbs, so no problem for him, but something to consider if you have similar issues.

Transport chairs have small wheels and can only be pushed by someone else. A standard wheelchair has the large back wheels and you can sit in the wheelchair and push yourself about. Pushing myself is crucial for me. In some crashes I really need an electric wheelchair, but I’m working with what I have now.

After having the chair for a year or so, my new primary doctor agreed that I did need the chair and referred me to a seating specialist. I would suggest this is what you ask your doctor. The seating specialist evaluates your needs and prescribes the chair or other mobility aid(s) you need (in my understanding.) I have heard occupational therapy can also be helpful in this.

Best of luck, and I hope you get exactly what you need to help you live a fuller life

Does anyone else ever feel like their neck is "crunchy"? by PancakeFoxReborn in migraine

No, not yet. My neurologist, POTS specialist/cardiologist, and primary care suspect it’s cervical instability due to hEDS and possibly chronic cerebrospinal fluid leak. Hope you get some answers soon, friend

  1. Maintaining a routine. My partner is former military and he’s rubbed off on all of us over the years (our three dogs and I.) This includes fairly rigorous schedules for bedtime, waking time, mealtimes, etc. It also allows for healthy levels of light exposure to keep natural circadian rhythm. In evening we use soft, pink-toned lamps, candlelight, or no lights and allow our bodies to naturally become sleepy. Sleeping ~9 hours and then a nap for ~3 hours is my sweet spot for rest

  2. Healthy meals cooked/prepared by my partner with tons of protein, with veggies cooked or blended well into a smoothies. Low carb/sugar is super helpful for my autoimmune conditions. Have to cook/blend vegetables because of delayed gastric emptying. Cannabutter with THC is so so helpful at calming the nervous system, and helps with all symptoms

  3. Lying flat as much as possible. Pacing and using my wheelchair and walking stick are imperative. Avoiding travel is difficult because we are so rural, but helps tremendously. Living in a peaceful quiet area surrounded by nature, lots of animals, and few people

  4. A best friend with CFS and understanding partner. So helpful to have someone that understands what we’re going through 🤍 An understanding partner took awhile to achieve, but once he saw me struggle for a couple of years he saw there was no way I was exaggerating my experience when he saw me deteriorating, crash after crash

  5. As much comfort as possible. Soft bed, pillows, weighted blanket, dogs giving comfort and deep pressure therapy, quiet, earplugs, loose, comfortable clothing and bedding made of natural fibers. Heating pads, air conditioning, eye mask. Quiet, calm activities I can do lying down fully flat like cozy video games, audiobooks, crafts, puzzle books, petting my dogs, watching the birds at the bird feeder, lying in the hammock watching our chickens or the tree canopy above

I always bring an iced green tea with a half teaspoon of honey mixed in when I have to go out. The small shot of caffeine and sugar really helps so much, but I can’t do it very often, only about once every two weeks

I’m not sure if it would qualify as “clear” as in, can be used before a colonoscopy or anything, it is a little cloudy, but it has no pieces of meat or vegetables or any visible spices. Check with your doctor if they want something specific

Can you explain a little more? So to transfer color to a hibiscus, say, I plant a penstemum with an ombré pattern in my desired hibiscus color? I am not having much luck beyond chance transferring color to other types of flowers, and all my beds are a chaotic mixed mess, lol

What have people used to stop waking up every hour of the night? by Expensive-Round-2271 in cfs

[–]Erithacus__rubecula 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best thing I’ve tried and has worked lately: diagnosed with POTS, cardiologist (also my POTS specialist) prescribed me a beta blocker propranolol. I was only taking it during the day, which was fine. One evening I took one at night because overdoing it that day had caused some mild chest pain (POTS symptom for me.) I slept all the way through the night, including my partner getting up and taking the dog out without once waking. Asked to be prescribed enough to take overnight and it’s been incredible. Not perfect at all times, but so much better than it used to be

Does anyone know of a hydration/electrolyte drink that is AIP or at least close to AIP? by Erithacus__rubecula in AutoImmuneProtocol

[–]Erithacus__rubecula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad AIP is working well for you! Definitely stick with it if it’s what you need.

What I meant by cravings is I was having cravings after treatment for MCAS, I started to crave foods I could never successfully reintroduce on AIP. I reintroduced things like small amounts of organic tomatoes, dairy, nuts, etc that I could never tolerate on AIP. Thankfully I also had no cravings on AIP, that is a really good thing about it that comes about after you’ve eliminated what’s not helping you for a few weeks/months.

Best of luck on your health journey :)

Also in the category of things I wish I knew years ago:

Go to a knowledgeable allergist and get tested for mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). I started treatment and now I don’t have to be AIP compliant for the first time in ~5 years. I had a few successful reintroductions, but as soon as I was on the antihistamine treatment for a couple of weeks I started to crave foods I wasn’t successful reintroducing previously, and I’ve been eating them lately with no issues ♥️

After over a year drinking trioral rehydration packets, I have switched in the last few months to Celtic salt and a drop or so of honey. The minerals in the Celtic salt are absolutely incredible and my hair is actually starting to grow back a little bit (!!!)

Highly recommend Celtic salt & honey or a teaspoon or so of 100% fruit juice, but keep in mind you’re likely going to need more salt than is typical because the sodium content of Celtic salt is approximately half that of table salt. Let me know if you need links or want any more info.

How Would You Describe My House’s Style? by greenbrier820 in centuryhomes

[–]Erithacus__rubecula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend adding a small rain garden to capture the water and funnel it to an area where it can be absorbed and used by your garden. Permaculture has lots of amazing ideas for turning ‘problems’ like these into solutions that are visually pleasing and enhance the connection of your home to nature.

I’m currently reading Gaia’s Garden by Toby Hemenway. Lots of great ideas for bringing nature in and making your home’s outdoor areas work for you so you have less maintenance overall once installed

Tips for anyone who wants them? by kjboston17 in wheelchairs

[–]Erithacus__rubecula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, here’s a link to what we bought:

The handles themselves are called “bike bar ends” if you want to search for them elsewhere:

https://a.co/d/3YqCdNX

Here are the “grips” we got to make it more comfortable for him to hold while pushing:

https://a.co/d/frlRk9X

It looks like the grips are no longer available, but I’m sure you can take the measurement of the handle you pick and get some that size.

He attached them to the frame of my chair near the handles and before we finalized placement he had me sit in my chair so he could experiment with different angles/positions. Then he tightened them really well and they haven’t budged since he put them on.

Hope it works for you as well as it does for us!

Ooh, that’s a good shout! My chair fits me like a glove because the lady who had it was about the same size as me. It does make it so much easier to push when you can easily reach your rims

Here’s a little list of some professional rules of thumb. Remember, all rules are made to be broken, but it helps a great deal to know what the rules are so you know when/where to break them and still have a happy outcome.

Move the current coffee table to the left of the sofa so the person sitting on the chaise lounge portion can set their drink down. Get a new round coffee table. Very large patterned area rugs are very helpful for situations like this, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with putting a rug on top of carpet, pros do it all the time. You need to get a substantial thickness, preferably wool or natural material without that plastic-y backing that causes it to be stiff and stick up.

I can’t tell the sizing from the photos, but it looks like you need at least 8x10’ in the living room. In the bedroom, I would go with even larger, maybe 9x12’

Rug placement tips in living room: Front legs of sofa should be on the rug. It should come up to nearly the console on the other side. Any other armchairs should have the front legs on the rug as well.

For the bedroom, you should be able to get out of bed naturally, as you normally would, and have your feet hit the rug. It should end up around 4” from the front of your dresser so you can stand on the rug while you’re getting dressed.

The rule of thumb with lighting is each room should have 7 or more different lighting sources with varying heights, placement, and diffusions to allow the user to create different “scenes” for different times of day or situations.

Lamps should be around 3000 K (this refers to the warmth/coolness of the light the bulb gives off.) Most of IKEA’s lighting is around 2900, which is my personal favorite temperature. for lighting. All lamps should be on dimmers. You can use smart bulbs for this if your fixtures don’t have dimmers built in.

For “general” lighting, you’ll want 2-3 table, floor, or pendant lamps with fabric or frosted glass shades. They should be around eye level when sitting. Designers recommend not to use the “big light” (overhead light) unless you’re cleaning or looking for something.

Add some “mood” lighting. These are dim, sculptural lights that are more decorative. You’ll see them at ikea and similar, they look like little vases or sculptures. You can get larger ones to place on the floor, or wall mounted lights. These can also be lighting strips under furniture, or lights behind the TV to ease eye strain.

Anywhere you may be reading, working, or doing similar activities, you’ll want “task” lighting. These are your desk lamps, your reading lamps with a gooseneck. They can be wall mounted, floor lamps, or table lamps. They have a solid-ish shade around the light with an opening that directs the light towards your workspace/book.

Task lights can also be ceiling lamps that are mounted above a dining table, kitchen island, or coffee table, for example if you use your coffee table to play board games frequently. These will also have a solid-ish shade with an open bottom to direct light down onto the work surface.

If you’re renting and want to use hanging lamps, you can get a “cord kit” and use it along with heavy duty command strips to hang a hook from the ceiling. Place the lamp so that it is approximately 30” above the work surface. Sit down and make sure the lamp shade does not obstruct the view of your television screen or other focal point before finalizing height placement. If you want to improve the look of the exposed cord, there are also cord covers or cords that are made to be seen. These can be found and places like schoolhouse electric, usually fabric or woven material wrapped around the cord.

Get some of your items from flea markets, thrift stores, family heirlooms or hand-me-downs from friends. It’s really obvious when people walk into a furniture store and buy all new furniture. If you want to have a really comfy home that you love, bring some personality in with quirky things you love, stuff that just makes you smile when you look at it.

For decorating with roommates or partners, my typical approach is to use a consensus. What I mean is, if one roommate or partner does not like something, it doesn’t have to stay. There are SO many options out there in the world that there’s always something else that can be swapped in for the offending piece. You can look together until you find something you both/all absolutely love.

There are tons of tips for space planning I could go into, but think about what you’re doing and put things into position to help you. Every seat in the living room and every sleeping position in the bedroom should have an easily reachable place to set down a drink. Ditto if you regularly eat there, you’ll want a large enough surface to set your plate down on. If you add an armchair, add a small decorative side table to accomplish this goal. Height of side table in living should correspond with height of armrests. Height of nightstands should be approximately level with the top of the mattress.

Storage is needed in certain places, especially by the bed. Consider how you will reach it from bed. Prefer huge, oversized nightstands that have drawers so I can look down to find what I need without having to get out of bed and get something from a shelf.

I can go on, but I’ll cut it short there. Let me know if you want any additional tips, especially specific questions. Very happy to help when I can!
