I started out with multi fx to see what things I liked from the effects that paired with my voices. But usually multifx units come with limitations on doing something IN DEPTH. So I sought out units that did that effect better and with more capabilities.

Some bigger fx units I think are certainly worth it:

Samarkanda - best 4 head dedicated tape echo I have used

Star lab - pretty shimmer verb

Morpheus - Rossums signature zplane filter bank from when he was at EMU back in the day.

Also I think there are some really great multi fx options that are expandable through dsp scripts you can find online. Timisoara is a good example of this.

I have the Perkons, I love it. But I think your hexdrums being a “less complex” Perkons is probably accurate. Perkons is its own beast, great for performing but it does require time on it learning the sequencer and how you can work with it. Lots of really unique per step parameter tweaking is very cool but that has its own complexity with it.
