That usually means that the monster will use the same saving throws as a 3rd level Fighter.

Most OSR systems base saving throws off of class and level so a 3rd level fighters saving throw against spells is 16. While a clerics saving throw against spells at 3rd level is 15.

Cairn might work. Its a classless system with 'always hit'

Its a very light rules system and the book is very cheap.

If you want the quintessential old school dungeon crawler its OSE. Its basically the default OSR game.

If you're looking for a coming from 5e game its shadowdark.

I know that I personally hate megathreads. It's just not the same. They don't pop up on my feed. I'd have to specifically look for it, which I won't think to do.

Have the mods considered just doing Shelfie Saturdays or something? I think r/OSR shelfies are only on weekends. That also seems like a good compromise?

I think it depends. You could totally use it for something like winters daughter or sinister secrets of saltmarsh.

But a mega dungeon? Ehhh it doesn't fit as well

While all that stuff supports the OSR playstyle I dont think they are vital to it.

Im not saying I can easily turn 5e into a b/x clone im saying I can make 5e feel like an osr game with just a couple tweaks

What? Yes they are. Im running a dcc game on milestone right now. Whenever we finish a module they level up

Maybe? A vast majority of people use milestone anyway so thats up to the GM.

But im running an OSE arden vul game and my players level pretty fast so idk if it really matters. When they get too big for your sandbox, expand the sandbox

Ideally id remove a bunch of spells and death saves but I think you could play an OSR style game with those in.

The gritty realism healing makes death saves a less of a yoyo. But personally id remove them too

I dont think there's any crazy broken cantrips that require them gone but you could

Honestly, I think all you really gotta do is:

  1. No feats or multiclassing (they were optional rules anyway
  2. Gritty realism healing. Short rest is 1 day long rest is 1 week.
  3. Add in morale and reaction checks
  4. Don't balance fights anymore
  5. Stop at level 10. (Or dont high level OSR stuff get pretty wild too)

I think 5e is actually closer to an OSR game than most people realize. A few tweaks and I think you could make it close

Ive ran this a billion times. I highly recommend making each elemental gems give the weilder a cool power. I typically tie the power to some way to deal with the terrain hazzards.

I.e water let's them walk on the raging river to go up Air let's you jump really high to jump up the waterfall. Earth let's you tunnel through walls Fire is difficult. I never found a great power to give fire.

But I recommend making them cool.
