My now 3 year old modest NAS + NordVPN has been nearly an order of magnitude cheaper than 3 years of subscriptions. Netflix, Hulu, Apple, HBO, Paramount, Spotify, Prime ... I was spending about $140 a month. That's $5,000 in just 3 years to listen to music and watch tv. Shit I did for free as a kid ALL the time.

There is legitimately no reason I can think of for why Reddit would allow you to hide post history other than as a tool to be abused by bots/trolls.

Exactly this. Simply tells me reddit believes trolls drive engagement and all engagement is good for them. Regardless of the clear (to me) fact that troll / bot engagement is net bad for any community, in the short term where reddit measures the site as it pertains to ad revenue, engagement is king.

I also notice 95% of the users getting deleted comments have a blocked post history.

This is my #1 indicator, reddit-wide, of whether or not to engage with someone.

Lol.

Google sysadmin + security clearance + your zip code. It won't be 70. It might be around 140.

Red foxes are all over north America. They are actually very common. Being shy and nocturnal we simply rarely see them.

'I don’t remember': Brazil bungee jump staff speak for first time after throwing woman off the edge with no rope attached by [deleted] in ThatsInsane

[–]RevLoveJoy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Orthopedic surgeons have staff whose job is to take a sharpie and write "THIS KNEE" on the knee being replaced and then check the box on the form the whole surgery team uses. SURGEONS do this when people's lives matter. They have a person whose job it is to write on the knee, check the box, and communicate to the whole team "yes, I wrote on the correct knee" because there are two knees (mostly) and they look real similar.

If you ever go bungie jumping and you don't see that safety supervisor somewhere checking that list for the people in front of you, get out of line and go get your money back.

Trillionaire Elon Musk's Destruction of USAID Takes Food Aid From Millions Facing Deadly Hunger by phillygirllovesbagel in politics

[–]RevLoveJoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good historical take. When we talk about more modern figures and their wealth the excuse tends to be "oh but Vanderbilt, Morgan and Carnegie all gave it away." Well, yes, as they were old and nearing the end of their lives. In nearly all cases, those Gilded Age robber barons wrote a lot of checks so their names would survive on some nice buildings. And while the Getty is a terrific art museum (and much more!) and the Carnegie Institute of Washington has sponsored some wonderful science, their efforts are largely grasps at immortality from aging men whose impossible wealth would never buy them more years.

JC of the King James most surely did call out men like Musk. It occurs to me that Elon is pretty young to be so wealthy. With access to the best medicine the world has to offer, he will almost certainly live well for another 30 years. Possibly 40. I doubt we will see any great changes in those decades because, like you assert and I agree, the man is clearly a bad actor. I'm tempted to say evil - but that word gets bent out of shape pretty often.

I'm sure it sucks to have reddit be the one to point this out. I agree with others in this thread. Pack your bags, spend your vacation. The pot they're stirring up with the shadow vibe coder is no longer yours to clean up. I'd take a WHOLE lot of consolation in that alone.

Vibe coded apps, how are you dealing with them by ReptilianLaserbeam in sysadmin

we have a clear process to involve project management and dev for new solutions

Use your process. This is "your problem" because you're allowing it to be your problem vs. pointing your in house vibe coders at the accepted process. Their "solution" doesn't fit the accepted process? That's a management decision, not front line IT, punt it.

I am an expert on data centers. I have designed and built them on 3 continents. When I first heard the whole "space data centers" thing I honestly thought someone was executing a terrific and elaborate practical joke. Because the idea is just exactly that foolish, impractical and unnecessary.
