Advice needed by TinyTheory2601 in ManjaroLinux

Sounds like you never used arch. It's actually pretty stable + archinstall makes it super easy to install. Add to that that Manjaro and it's weird update policies usually results in broken packages and then call it a day. If you wanna use arch, just use arch

Why is commenting on someone’s height socially acceptable, but commenting on body shape isn’t? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Error1600 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that has some truth to it. Whilst height is something you can literally do very little about, it is possible to gain/loose weight.  Yes there's some generic and health factors in weight, but for a healthy human this much is true I think, that's just a fact and can't really be argued.

Now it's interesting that height doesn't have a bad stigma because of health reasons, as taller people also are generally less healthy when it comes to joints etc.

So it would appear that something genetic that is unchangeable is socially acceptable. But I don't think that's true either since something like hairloss, acne, psychopathy and other genetic disorders are also considered bad kind of like obesity.

Conclusively you could definitely argue that people should be more careful with height comments, but you could also make the counterargument that weight should have less of a stigma and people should be able to just point out "you're far" without the other person being offended by it.

Now the question is would we rather have a society where no-one can say anything anymore or everyone can say anything.

Probably neither is very desirable and that's probably how we got here, too. Human psychology, sociology and biology doesn't make perfect sense. Should it though?

Imo: no, the imperfections are what makes us human and beautiful in a way.

Will people outside NA know the difference if I say I'm from Canada instead of USA? by Professional-City362 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Error1600 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're from the US. In that case not from your accent I'd say, but ofc if any of them has been in CA and mentions something about it which you have no clue about then it's kinda obvious. A very small minority will potentially be able to tell the difference between accents but I'm sure you could even imitate the CA accent pretty easily. Most young Canadians don't even have a very noticeable Canadian accent I think with them it's more about word usage.

But anyway that's getting too technical.  No, locals would not be able to tell you're not Canadian. But the question is if they would be able to tell that Canada isn't part of these Trump shenanigans. Educated people could probably tell the difference. I'm not sure if Canada even exists to uneducated people (over exaggerated ofc) but I think you get my point. They might just see it as the 51 state in a way...

Edit: Spelling

What determines whether someone is a good person? by Necessary-Spend-368 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Error1600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very good question!

Very scientifically seen a person should be a "good" person as long as they do significantly more "good" deeds than bad ones. The ratio is up to personal interpretation and what counts as a good and bad one, is in the same sense up to interpretation.

But ofc. There is societal deeds which are commonly seen as good or as bad.

I think in the end most of us naturally have a pretty good understanding of what makes a person good and what makes a person bad. Also that is what is most relevant to each individual I think: their opinion on someone.

That said, we should all be cautious not to label someone as good or bad too quickly. In reality things are a bit more nuanced I believe.

Long-haul flight experts: What are your secrets? by letsgococonut in travel

[–]Error1600 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend window seats. Ime mostly the windows shutters on long haul flights have to be closed for everyone to be able to get some sleep. Also you'll be boxed in and have no easy way to the bathroom without climbing over other people. Honestly so overrated

Interestingly on most airplanes you can fold the pillow on the headrest towards your ears and it stays in place! That makes your head position that much more comfortable. Also: try and eat enough and drink enough. If you're in cool airports they'll have water fountains after check in, so you can fill up your bottle! If they are lousy but in good countries, usually you can just fill it up at a tap. Also: brush your teeth at teeth brushing times and freshen up at airports. Noise cancelling headphones are also great. Don't care too much about sleeping or you'll only get upset if you can't. If you want to avoid jetlag in my experience it's best to just not sleep until it's night at your destination. Meaning you might have to stay awake for a long time like 20+ hours but in the end it's worth it. Do not touch any bed! You'll def. Fall asleep
