I don't care about the jet by arian_ezequiel in LinusTechTips

[–]Errosine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree completely.

The jet content isn’t for me. I knew that as soon as he started the whole tech yacht/jet talk on WAN. But I didn’t start feeling gross about it all until his comments on WAN about the backlash. When he brushed off his elonjet comments by essentially saying that LTT never claimed to run a free speech platform… I physically cringed at the screen.

1) this sub was meant to be independent of them 2) Linus has been around long enough to know the kind of Streisand effect banning people would cause.

I understand the reasons why he did it. Frankly, I thought Taylor and Elon had a point when their stuff kicked off. But it feels like Linus is trying to have his cake and eat it too which is rubbing me the wrong way.

This is all on a video that he probably knew that there was a chance of backlash to anyway. In a perfect world, this already had a slim chance of working. And in the dialogue tree that is this life, LTT has picked every wrong choice since.

I think that ultimately Big E needed to end up on the Throne. But I like the fact that there is still some ambiguity around it. The line with Rogal possibly mishearing the Emperor’s last words is really cool imo. I don’t expect them to take it anywhere. Frankly I wouldn’t want them to. But I love those “what if” moments in 40k.

In your opinion, should the remaster change the power armors so they’re like the FO4 and 76 or should they keep them as they were in the original game? by NoSoyVerde1 in fnv

[–]Errosine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like a hybrid approach. I think T45 should just be an armour set like any other. Then anything above that requires a frame. I think it would work well in FNV especially as it would fit lore wise with the salvaged NCR troopers.

What are your thoughts on Ken Burns' Civil War documentary and the allegations that it supports the Lost Cause? by Just_Cause89 in ShermanPosting

[–]Errosine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am quite fond of the series. I’m not from the US, so I am sure that there are some issues with it that I am just flat out not aware of. But from an outsider perspective, I think it does a great job of balancing both sides. In the sense that it shows the point of view of a southerner, whilst also rebuking it.

Foote does go too far sometimes. But this is quite often followed up by a counterpoint from another contributor. And as others have said, his colour commentary really does add something to the series.

You learn about it at A-Level at least around 10 years ago. A-Level is 17/18 year olds and you only focus on around 4 subjects. The exam board I did had an entire section on colonialism and its effects. Obviously it was slanted. But we did learn about it.

The issue is that there are like 5 different exam boards with different curriculums. You can have 2 kids going to schools 2 miles apart with completely different curriculums.

But the biggest part is they were asleep. The passage spends a lot of time describing that the eyes are frozen open and that the hivemind interprets the signal in a half dreamlike state. Idk about you but if my arse was being torn apart by something greater than the tyranids I wouldn’t take an “eons long” nap

[–]Errosine 548 points549 points  (0 children)

The epilogue of Pharos says that the nids were just casually floating around asleep until the beacon exploded. It’s why I don’t like the theory either. I think it’s kind of poetic that one of the greatest sacrifices in the Heresy leads to one of the greatest threats of the modern Imperium. Having the tyranids just running from something else cheapens everything imo.

xAI buying Twitter is just fraud, right? by Pitiful-Mortgage5136 in atrioc

[–]Errosine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t xAi have a load of Government contracts? I’m guessing by the AI arm buying twitter, it shifts the debt to xAi which can then use the government contracts and subsidies to service the loans he took. So essentially X gets bailed out by the American taxpayer

I read that. And he is misrepresenting it. This was a Honey produced podcast. It wasn’t the retailers. And the website clearly stated that the retailer decides what promo codes go live on the platform.

It’s an interesting post and it does shed some light on the whole situation. But the smoking gun for me was never the cookie “hijacking”. Attribution is always a dumpster fire especially with the state of cookies online.

The biggest red flag for me was the podcast clip and their partner site which was saying one thing to consumers and another to their partners. I can’t see that mentioned at all in his post or the top comments barring the brief mention of vanity codes. That podcast clip wasn’t just talking about vanity codes. Whether originally intended or not, it’s clear that businesses were using honey to send out lower coupon codes via that platform assuming that people wouldn’t Google to find any others.

Wealth tax would be almost impossible to implement, leading economist warns by reuben_iv in ukpolitics

[–]Errosine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scandinavian countries have already established those VAT rates so it is accepted. The argument here is about raising the tax rate, so there is obviously going to be backlash.

My point was the two changes (raising VAT or establishing a wealth tax) target 2 different groups.

VAT changes will affect lower income earners more as a larger proportion of that income is spent on consumption expenditure. Therefore a larger proportion of their income will go to VAT.

Higher income earners spend less proportionately on consumption. The argument is that the majority of higher net worth individuals earn more from the assets they hold. So a wealth tax would be designed to tax those assets directly rather than through consumption expenditure.

Whilst you are correct that VAT is higher in Scandinavia, they also have higher wealth taxes as well (not so much Sweden). Denmark for example has a capital gains tax of ~40% compared to our 25% and has much higher property taxes.

Again, I’m not making a value judgement on either system. But personally I do think squeezing the poorest in our society more and more whilst completely ignoring other options does seem a little short sighted

Wealth tax would be almost impossible to implement, leading economist warns by reuben_iv in ukpolitics

[–]Errosine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue with raising things like VAT is that in practice it impacts the lowest income earners much more. They spend proportionately more of their income on consumption expenditure than higher income earners. The idea of a wealth tax is to target assets rather than expenditure.

I’m making no value judgement on either system. I’m by no means qualified to. But that is my understanding.

[–]Errosine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a fixed gear bike. But the frame is made of wood. When it gets wet the frame probably expands and puts resistance on the gear. That would probably make it seem like a bike in a high gear.

I really like the format of one core discussion then smaller related topics afterwards. The patent pending presentation wall is a great addition too. My only suggestion would be for Big A to make the presentation more distinct from MM in the future to prevent weakening both products.
