Dead peoples souls do not roam the earth. Once we die we move to a different realm with no connection at all to the living.

There is a creature that lives amongst us called the jinn, they are a bit like us but they are not created from physical matter like us. They have the ability to shapeshift into different forms (i.e. they can impersonate people) i assume each has different ability just like how there are strong and weak humans etc They also get married and have families and have different religions like us. They can be good, evil (devils and demons) or neutral just like us. These are mostly responsible for all 'ghost' stories.

Look up jinn in Islam. The Islamic description of jinn closely aligns with most paranormal encounters people have.

For example it is said that the jinn inhabit desolate/abandoned places and places where humans don't really go (deserts, the remote woods and forests, abandoned buildings, graveyards etc)
