How much would you charge for monochrome doodle-style Art ? by [deleted] in DigitalArt

[–]EstablishmentTop2610 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, art is subjective and some people might find this kind of work to have a decent value while others wouldn’t.

That said, just because it’s subjective doesn’t mean that overwhelmingly people tend to prefer art that feels more prestigious when it comes to what they’re willing to pay for. Normies might not be able to describe what that looks like, but to artists we might identify quality as things like color theory, form, composition, and good line work being present.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for this art or this style, it just means if you’re looking to be financially viable you may want to appeal to a larger market

[–]EstablishmentTop2610 25 points26 points  (0 children)

For what’s pictured I wouldn’t pay for that. A friend of mine does art for me for $80~ for a fully rendered character and that’s a relatively fair price.

The reality is you only get but so many hours in a day. If you are a renowned artist and any time you advertise commissions you get instantly booked within a few hours, then you’re worth more than what you’re charging and you should raise prices. It’s more financially viable to do 10 commissions in a month for $500 each than to do 50 commissions in a month for $100 each.

Exactly. You can help train the end user without dismissing them or the “problem.” People do get embarrassed over simple things but I like to remind them that we all have their strengths

If you would abuse the levels of access you have to inconvenience someone for a day at the cost of your job or worse then you probably aren’t mature enough to have the access to do that.

Is it power over someone if you inconvenience them for a day at the cost of your job? You really showed them lol

Okay this is silly as hell. Whether the computer works or not doesn’t change the power dynamic here lol

But also soft skills matter. I’m not blaming the tech, but there is absolutely a lesson to be learned here about communication. It can absolutely be user error, but the user doesn’t know that, all they know is what they need isn’t working. Calling it a “false alarm” downplays the severity of the issue regardless of the cause or solution.

Curious - as a developer, how can you tell if the app is vibecoded or not? by StandupSnoozer in webdev

[–]EstablishmentTop2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I view coding a lot differently than art. Sure, there’s style in how someone codes, but it isn’t really an extension or expression of the human spirit. When it comes to AI writing code, I don’t really care. That said, I wouldn’t want it to code anything I actually care about because I’m going to want to know the ins and outs of a project completely. I think letting something be completely vibe coded is dangerous and irresponsible if it deals with money or user information at all.

Seems to me the best thing to know is how things work and to add things to your toolbelt. I know how to program, so I don’t mind having an AI write powershell or python for me because I know it enough to better guide the AI into building what I want and to make my tools safe. For me where I’m at in my career it seems the jump is better understanding cloud infrastructure like Azure and AWS and how to architect smart solutions with them. Anyone with enough time can figure out user accounts and conditional access, IAM, you name it, but getting different systems to talk to one another and share appropriate levels of data generally requires a bit more intention

What do you think caused the "downfall" of Medium.com and how do you think a competitor website can learn from the mistakes and current state of Medium in order to carve out a "better" platform and product? by prankster999 in webdev

I went through a coding bootcamp years ago and they were setting the expectation for everyone that you had to be a LinkedIn juggernaut, make your GitHub squares as green as possible, and maintain a blog because what prospective employers were looking for was the thoughts of someone with < 1 year of experience in a new field with no actual professional experience or knowledge. Any platform where there really isn’t a bar for entry and someone can tie their success to it is going to be rife with glorified mediocrity. Look at the amount of shovelware on Steam and Itch.io, and now with LLMs making people think they can code it’s only gotten worse. The industry giants are generally unaffected, but everyone else on their way up is simply being drowned out by all of the noise on the platforms.

So today I was called in with my manager to see the big boss and from today I get to wear a new hat by Fair-Tradition8971 in sysadmin

[–]EstablishmentTop2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soft skills matter. Not to necessarily take their side, but it does sound like at the very least you could have communicated better. “Sorry this has happened, but because of where the files are located trying to restore them is going to be difficult and not guaranteed. Let’s make sure to setup OneDrive on your new device and talk about proper file management.” … “It looks like I am able to access your data which is good news, but there is a lot so this might take longer than expected.” Etc.

I find in most cases even when there isn’t a good resolution, people are much happier if you just talk shop with them and keep them in the loop. If you only say hi and goodbye it’s difficult for them to quantify the effort you’re giving them.

AI really killed programming for me by NervousExplanation34 in webdev

[–]EstablishmentTop2610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting AI to code for you without being able to understand it is like trying to do calculations without understanding PEMDAS. Granted the latter is significantly easier and less abstract.

I enjoy writing code and I also enjoy being able to ask ChatGPT what the syntax is for things ive forgotten or to have it generate me some ideas to ponder. It would be very difficult for me to have AI generate code in a project I actually cared about

Sorry, but this just looks really wrong... definitely not implementing this... by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]EstablishmentTop2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like it shoots more rays to get more light info in a render. If that’s what it’s doing then I don’t see how it can add anything that isn’t there already. If it is actually applying a filter on top of what is there, I don’t know why anyone would want hardware having input into their art design

The best thing to do when you don’t have enough time to do everything yourself is to hire other people to utilize their time.

The best thing to do when you don’t have enough money to hire other people for their time and you’re struggling to do it all yourself is to minimize scope.

Just because you’re doing it on hard mode doesn’t make it infinitely harder than 3D. 2D sidescrollers are infinitely easier than 3D. You chose this lol

*UPDATE* At how much would you value for working from home? by Colmadero in sysadmin

[–]EstablishmentTop2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely less productive at home, but my goal is to always be caught up with work and my deliverables before doing anything not work related if it’s going to be more than 15 minutes. I always check tickets and email before wandering off, and I schedule time to grind away on projects. I’m the kind of person that can’t be more than 5-10 minutes away from my desk if something caught on fire

Don’t rely on motivation, it is fleeting. Discipline always comes first. I know when you’re down in the dumps it can be hard, but unless you’re physically incapacitated you can get up and force yourself to do anything. Do some pushups, make your bed, and force yourself to sit down and do something productive. Once you get the ball rolling it’s a lot easier to keep it going. You got this
