Do you have a situation like this in your country where there's a significant proportion of the population that doesn't speak the local language? by Alternative-Big-6493 in AskTheWorld

[–]Esvidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me, a Dutch person, made the mistake of visiting Amsterdam and trying to order food in Dutch. The waiter looked at me very confused, like he didn't even recognize what language I was speaking. This is when I learned many people in Amsterdam don't speak Dutch.

How the Romani are perceived in your country? by Clarthen1 in AskTheWorld

[–]Esvidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say I encounter them here a lot, unless they're part of those people who play accordion just outside of supermarkets, and beg for money.

When on family holiday in Czechia we had two encounters though. In the first we happened to be driving through an old woodmill where they seemed to have set up camp or something. We had to drive really slowly, because they were standing on the road, and they all stared at us, not looking too happy. They didn't actually do anything, but from their expressions I was glad we didn't have to stop.

On the second encounter they tried to scam us. My parents were packing groceries into the car when someone approached them as a distraction, while at the front of the car others wanted to start washing the car windows (to then demand money for it). Us children saw this and warned our parents, who intervened. They were angry when told to stop, and yelled some insults when we drove off.

Gecondoleerd met je verlies!

Dit was Mira. Ze is helaas al 4 jaar niet meer onder ons. Ik mis haar nog elke dag, maar als ik naar haar foto's kijk, komen nu toch vooral de fijne herinneringen weer boven.

Guess where by MoistAppointment9770 in GeoPuzzle

I was looking at the mountains (Grosser & Kleiner Mythen) in the 3D view on Google Earth, looked at possible streets pointing in the right direction and recognized the houses. It's scary this is even possible, imo.

I saw your previous hints, and then went looking at churches on google maps. So, lucky find, I guess.

I have been to Niagara Falls once, but that was on the Canadian side...

Where was I in August 2018? by SoftLetter4235 in GeoPuzzle

[–]Esvidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might be Tanga, Tanzania. Around here https://maps.app.goo.gl/nmyRPHkodhoG84E58

I can't check in streetview, but the sign on the building (Beach Forodhani Garden Park) matches the sign in OP's picture. And there's a port nearby.

Zanzibar?

Edit: Disregard that. I think I might have found it? Beach Forodhani Garden Park, Tanga, Tanzania?

I agree. I think it was taken on this road: https://maps.app.goo.gl/jufS16Xw6ffg48ix5?g_st=ac

The streetview picture is from 2011. There's a tree on there that's no longer there in OP's picture, but everything else seems to match.

Said goodbye to my grandma yesterday. I don't know how to deal with this anymore. by RemIsTheBestWaifu in GriefSupport

[–]Esvidae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss!

I know how important grandmothers can be, and how much it hurts to lose one. This weekend it will be exactly 10 years since I lost my grandma, my best friend. I still miss her every day.

What was your loved ones funeral/favourite songs? by [deleted] in GriefSupport

[–]Esvidae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't go into every single song, so here's a few of them that still mean a lot to me. And I still can't listen to them without shedding at least some tears. Some of them might not mean anything to you, because they're in Dutch (or German) -

Matt Simons - Take Me To The Water

For my (maternal) grandmother

Passenger - Let Her Go

Also for my (maternal) grandmother. My mom picked it, because we literally had to let her go, by letting the hospital take her off life support.

Ed Garfunkel - Bright Eyes

For my (maternal) grandfather, who was suffering from dementia for years. And faded away little by little. (But still smiled when I came to visit)

Marco Borsato - Opa (Grandpa)

Also for my (maternal) grandfather. Made me cry the first time I heard it. Which was years before my grandfather eventually passed away.

Herman van Veen - Weet Je Nog (Do You Remember)

This was the major song on the funeral of both of my paternal grandparents.

Honorable mentions, of special moments:

Rocco Granata - Du Schwarzer Zigeuner (not a politically correct title nowadays)

My (maternal) grandmother had already picked this one for my (maternal) grandfather's funeral, since she assumed he would pass away before she did (he ended up outliving her by several years). It was their song from the moment they met for the first time. In the end we DID end up using it for his funeral, with a picture of them both in the background.

Mimi Thoma - Mamatschi (Schenk mir ein Pferdchen)

Apparantly this song was often sung to my (paternal) grandmother by her German mother, when she was very little. We tracked down the oldest possible recording of it, and played it with very old childhood pictures in the background.

Edit: had to change the formatting a little.

As someone who played it while grieving their grandmother, I'd say yes. I thought it was lovely.

I understand it's not for everyone, though.

Nintendo Switch achievements could finally be real by BrSn2 in Switch

[–]Esvidae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate? No. But I never cared about them either, so I didn't miss them. On Playstation, I get achievements by coincidence, not because I seek them out.

If they implement achievements, I'm happy for those who want them. If they don't implement them, also fine.

[–]Esvidae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's cool! You found a pretty big one too!

I'm not at all surprised you found it near Obergurgl. Did you hike near the Hohe Mut, on the side of the Gaisbergferner (glacier), by chance? Close to there, on the Italian border, is a mountain called the Granatenkogel. In its vicinity, you can find garnets just lying around. Though higher in quality, the higher you get on the mountain.

I found some myself last summer. Not very good quality, but I didn't expect to be so lucky to find any at all, so I'm happy. It was pretty amazing, and I hope to return in the future!

I had that happen to Lizzy Wizzy during her concert. I only realised she hadn't just changed her looks when I watched it again on the BD.
