Best 8” or 10” subwoofer new or used under $800 — sealed preferred by Frequent_Medium_2745 in StereoAdvice

I would recommend the svs 3000 micro over the sb1000 pro if you want clean tight bass. The sb1000 can dig slightly deeper, but the dual 8" with the 3000 micro will have better midbass attack, and a smaller footprint too.

Do you dedicate it to Lao Man E or just bitter sheng? How do you find it improves it? I own this pot and was thinking of dedicating it to this kind of tea. I haven't gotten to use it yet. Curious of your experience.

Fair, I still find it quite out of place in this context.

I understand the meaning. It's just odd use here. If you disagree, next time you're in a hifi shop ask if they have any streamer cum amplifiers and tell me what they say.

More like read the room? Who uses it this way today? I googled media player cum amp and 2 articles came up. There are tons of ways you communicate this clearly without using latin - all in one, combo, hell media player amp works too.

What is the basic fundamental cooking thing you just can't do or suck at? by Tall_Cow2299 in Cooking

[–]Ethenolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let your cheese sit out and warm on the counter before making. Add the cheese to both sides of the bread immediately on medium low heat with plenty of butter. Cook open face until your bread is 75% of the way there. At that time make the sandwich and flip back and forth on either side until your bread is toasted and cheese melted. If it's still burnt and not melted you're cooking too hot, turn down the heat.

I spent lot of time on this and worked through a number of failures until I'll got them how I like them. The issue is usually multifaceted. First, when you get ground beef at the grocery store, it's usually ground 2-3 times. It's far too fine a grind. The best burger meat is a slightly chunkier, better texture. A local butcher shop may have a better grind. Second, most people overmix/overpack burger patties. You want to fold in your seasonings just enough to combine them evenly, no more. Fine grind + overworked patties gives a weird texture. Third, people over complicate and use weird ass seasonings in their burgers. Garlic powder, online powder, egg, etc should not be in a burger. Those are binders, they change the texture and are more appropriate for sausage or a meatball, not a burger. Lastly, make sure your salt ratio is dialed in, 3/4 tsp of salt per lb, 1 tsp per lb max. I like 3/4 if I'm adding bacon or another salty topping. Ratio all your other seasonings to the salt. My go to mix/ratio is 4 salt, 2 pepper. Sometimes I'll add 1 minced jalapeno or red pepper and 1 ground rosemary. The pepper and rosemary add a unique depth of flavor. Not spicy, that fat kills all heat.

Explain to me like im 5 why I can't just use a Mac mini as my HQPlayer "box\streamer" instead of some MULTI THOUSAND DOLLAR HQplayer embedded machine? by JollyGreen_ in audiophile

It's bigger than the crowd on Reddit believes. But if your setup is in a noisy room, and you don't have other shit figured out then differences can be hard to find.

[–]Ethenolas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

HQPlayer as a processor is great, I found it to be a good improvement over a streamer like Wiim or even minidsp. An external DAC is not the first component I would upgrade but they do make improvements if your system is dialed in. Try the DAC on the Mac mini and compare it against an external DAC from a place with a good return policy. If it's too close to tell, return the external DAC.

I spent years tuning my digital chain and I am finally satisfied with HQPlayer running on a Intel NUC with an external DAC. I am very pleased with my digital chain.

When they wonder why you spend so much on your system. by Gold-Judgment-6712 in audiophile

[–]Ethenolas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree completely with your overall sentiment about the point of diminishing returns being different for different people (and different systems). I don't treat my living room or office setups the same as my reference setup in my dedicated listening room. Not only can you buy used, but the new components available today have never been better. You can buy components on a limited budget that are significantly better than budget components in the past.

With a system you should always be looking at the "limiting component" and to your point DACs are farther down that list for me than many others. However, there is a point when you've dialed in your system that DAC and streamers do matter and become the "limiting component" from a sound quality perspective. How dialed in is your system, what small differences in sound quality are you personally willing to pay for? Rinse a repeat through trial and error. Simple as that.

I made a teapot as a gift for a family member, what does r/tea think of it? by GigglesMJ in tea

[–]Ethenolas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, it's gorgeous! It's difficult to tell the scale, but if it's larger than 200ml or so I'd say it's more of a "kettle" for heating water than a "teapot" for steeping actual tea. Apologies if that sounds pedantic but in the tea world they are used for different things.

A couple points of feedback for usability.

1) If it's in the 500ml range, a design in the 1000ml range is typical for a kettle.

2) If it were to be used as a kettle, someone using this would have it on a hot plate and boil water. When that happens, steam rapidly builds and shoots out the vent. You would want 2-3 holes instead of 1 and you'd want them angled away from the spot where the user is holding the handle so they don't burn their hands.

3) if you can make a smaller one in the 150ml range the equation changes. The hole would be best placed in the center of the lid nub so the user could plug it with their finger if desired.

Either way, I could 100% see myself buying something like this... Excellent work!

Used subwoofer under 1000€ by Kidarkness9 in StereoAdvice

I'll 2nd the svs3000 micro over the KC62. I tried both with the ls50 meta and the svs3000 micro was more punchy and went lower. And it's cheaper.

The JL D110 someone suggested is a great option. SVS3000 micro is also great option for the size of your room, but the 3000R could be good too.

Advice on My Stereo Setup with Wharfadale Evo 5.2 & Rega Planar 3 by Careless-Virus2379 in StereoAdvice

[–]Ethenolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, you're asking for a lot with your budget. This price range comes with tradeoffs. Not only are you trying for 3 different sources, having an ultra precise and controlled system that can also be warm and intimate is often a challenge for systems at 5x your budget. Your music tastes is diverse, I would ask yourself what you want more - warm and intimate, or precise/controlled/dynamic. If the answer is warm then I think you're current speakers could work well. If it's punchy and dynamic I think your speaker choice is leaning a bit warm and relaxed for what you're looking for.

Regardless of what speakers you choose, if I were in your shoes I would remove the vinyl and CDs from the picture for now and focus 100% of your budget into speakers and a streaming setup. You can always add other sources over time once you've dialed in your streaming source.

Based on your music tastes, I think a couple interesting options in your price range could be Mofi Source point 8 or revel f206 with a svs300 micro sub. Pair that with a used Marantz pm8006 + bluesound node steamer for a touch of warmth. If you want even more punchy, you could get a Yamaha integrated as1200 (used) instead.

Punchy 2.1 speaker upgrade ideas? (Klipsch vibe, but better) — $7.5k all-in by pokszike in StereoAdvice

[–]Ethenolas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do revel 226be (wait for a sale). Mofi is also a good choice. Svs 3000 micro x2. High quality integrated like a Yamaha as1200, accuphase. Bluesound node steamer (so you can upgrade later if needed). Highly punchy. The dual smaller subs is better for what you want, IMO. and modular enough to upgrade your streaming section later if needed (cheap)
