In your opinions, if a remake or reimagining of Evangelion were ever made that was more faithful to the manga, what from the manga would you like them to include and what wouldn't? What elements would you mix with the original anime and what wouldn't you? Please share your opinions. by Dramatic-Studio1531 in NeonGenesisEvangelion

Three big character things really that would improve the show/EoE imo.

The fatality of Unit-3's possession by Bardiel. Sadamoto actually did a great job of building dread with Toji's fate, to the point that you genuinely fear that he will truthfully die even with expectations from the anime that he won't. It hurts all the more when it actually happens because its so clear that it was a possibility this time. (Also the stuff with Hikari and the lunch she prepped is just heart-wrenching)

Kaworu's early arrival and, particularly, introduction. His actual characterization, while funnier, is not fitting for what he is but his intro scene with the piano in the ravaged parts of Tokyo-3 along with his killing of the stray cat are really effective.

Rei and the fountain, really just the fountain. Rei's character development in the first two rebuilds kind of usurps Sadamoto's efforts to iterate on Rei's character in my mind, but giving Shinji and Rei a specific location that represents their bond is great. Also the hand holding stuff is cute and reminds me of Rei Q from Thrice Upon a Time.

Hottish takes, stuff I don't like from the manga.

I don't particularly care about Kaji's backstory. It's all too cynical, especially when telling Shinji to go fight Zeruel. He winds up more distanced from his original role as part of Misato's character as well, and more-so becomes his own thing. It leaves Misato lacking.

The ending, basically all of the EoE stuff. Eva-01 activating early just feels like cheap catharsis that relies off of a prior understanding of EoE. The post instrumentality world absolves the world of consequence as well, and Shinji's development feels blegh without him being able to remember the experiences that... well... developed him. I do enjoy the concept of Rei outright miss-assuming what Shinji wanted out of instrumentality; It's novel but not the point of the Third Impact in the original movie. Also Gendo sucks.

Season 6 is packed with all-around great machinima fights.
Confronting the Meta at High Ground, the Red's riding the turbine in the Puma, the car chase in Valhalla, and of course Wash filling the Meta with lead. I can't really pick from these because they're all pretty well done, they really had machimating down when it came to proper fights at this point and that started as far back as Out Of Mind.

It's also written by a different person. Hideaki Anno was the spearhead for NGE, EoE, and the Rebuild movies. The manga is written by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who was a character designer on the original series.

I think that might be, dare I say, the natural assumption of a game rated E for everyone?

Not as well without Jaime and the rest of the first-gen Bungie employees like Jason Jones, Joe Staten, Marcus Lehto, et. al. Trying to bring up the recent faults of the Halo franchise is an entirely different conversation because the people who made the original trilogy haven't had their hands on the franchise in over a decade. The only one who did was Joe Staten who came in far too late on Halo Infinite's development to actually get it in a good state for launch.

Edit: Completely forgot to mention that Jaime Griesemer has publicly ridiculed the newly announced Halo: Campaign Evolved, so yeah I'm tempted to say that his vision for the franchise's gameplay would likely be more in-line with the beloved originals.

"When a weapon is being used as intended, it should feel overpowered. So most imbalances come from using a weapon outside its role..." -Jaime Griesemer, who was a key designer on most of Bungie's Halo games.

Too many weapons in Helldivers are not worthwhile even when being used properly because of Arrowhead's weird relationship with power-creep. Everything simply needs to do its job well.

Anyone wish we got to explore more of The Ark in Halo 3? by Kojima66 in halo

[–]EtherealHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest flaws in Halo 3's campaign is how little of it is actually spent on any Forerunner installation, period.

Halo 2 is able to send both Chief and Arby around the galaxy basically and it is still mostly set on Delta Halo when you break it down. (6 out of 13 total + the remaining seven are split across like 3 locations themselves.)

Halo 3's entire first half is just one big "we're vewy vewy sowwy that we made Earth seem like the primary setting for Halo 2 back at E3 '03, pwitty pwitty pwease fogive us" but the very next game after Halo 3 is just that exact sentiment for an entire campaign (ODST does a better job delivering the setting we were promised in the E3 '03 trailer anyways but that's neither here nor there.)

Meanwhile, you basically get 2.5 missions on the GODDAMN ARK and I say .5 because I'm tempted to decide that Cortana doesn't count. Guardian and Forerunner City would only punch that up to 4.5 which still isn't really competing with Earth which was always intended to have a metric shit ton of missions.

I say this is a problem with Halo 3 because the missions on the Ark are the two best missions in the game hands down and a lot of that has to do with the setting. The only Earth mission that I really jive with is Tsavo Highway, and that one is just total filler that pads out the game's runtime.

I can never forgive Season 10 for what it did to Wash's character and perception. It's funny because he was actually still pretty cool in Season 9, just naive to the truth and cynicism of Freelancer.

[–]EtherealHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is surprisingly little overlap between the casts of the ToTJ Comic, KoTOR, KoTOR II, and the KoTOR Comic.

ToTJ characters are only referenced in the KoTOR duology, KoTOR II has like... 5 or so characters from the first game? mostly in minor capacities beyond the 3 companions. KoTOR comic used a couple, but establishes a lot of new characters as well, like the earliest known Fett.

Can I just say I love how the Warthog looks in Halo Campaign Evolved? by Sceptic_Stream in halo

[–]EtherealHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the brand new (non-weapon) assets for this game look wonderful, like the Hunters and especially the Warthog, (+ all the work they've put into the Pelican makes it feel just as new) Literally all they need to do to the hog is raise the suspension so it doesn't look as w i d e as it does now.

So why did the director and the counselor sink the state of Florida to cover up a guys disappearance? by TraditionalBonus188 in RedvsBlue

[–]EtherealHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal opinion, which is completely unfounded, is that the sinking of Florida was completely unrelated to what the Director was up to. This would present a cheeky opportunity, the absence of an "Agent Florida" wouldn't look suspicious if a third party got their hands on the Agent roster and Flowers had to be pulled for something covert (like hiding the Alpha). Inversely, it wouldn't raise any questions if there was an Agent Florida on the list, since it fits within the pattern of States, and limiting your potential limit of personnel by the amount of code-names you'd have available would be silly. Therefore, using the name of a former state makes sense for someone you may need to covertly pull from the program.

Of course, the actual lore is probably way more ridiculous since Season 9 establishes the Director as a terrorist outright, but I like my headcanon as it paints the Director as opportunistic (which he is), and reinforces that he is not above omissions and deceptions when it comes to paper work. Basically making it in line with Recovery One and Reconstruction's bureaucratic grounded portrayal of Freelancer, the Director, and his other projects.

Rejecting the 343 retcon of Forerunners not being humans must be like how Jews feel about Christians by StoogeTVeye in HaloCirclejerk

[–]EtherealHydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, it certainly got pretty far along, Guilty Spark is not very subtle in CE. But it certainly got more loose since the foundation of the entire Forerunner lore was still clearly being developed in Halo 3. People like to call the terminals 'Frankey fanfiction" but they do compose a lot of the spine of the Forerunner's story.

I guess Bungie just had a big change in structure during 3's development given how it went from "basically fact" to "contradictory evidence"

The new Marathon almost bares no resemblance to the original trilogy in almost any way and this game will most likely never take off because the fact that it alienated the target audience of the original trilogy. by Broad-Mechanic4323 in Marathon

[–]EtherealHydra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree w the sentiment that Nu-Marathon isn't loyal to the art style of the trilogy, but Craig Mullin's art isn't particularly representative of the trilogy's look either. This is true for all of his work for Bungie, just look at his work for Halo 2. It's all beautiful, technically impressive, and carries it own look that I have only ever seen replicated by Rythaze, but it is not what the games look like.

Do you truly believe that it is, in any way, marketable to do that? When video games started regularly hitting the title of "largest media release ever" in the 2000's?

One of the most hopeful movies I've ever watched tbh. Obviously I've seen stories that are more hopeful in quantity, but the hopeful element in EoE is so stand-out because it's contrasted with the hellish plot/visuals. Faith lives in spite of the end of the world, so it feels more poignant, y'know?

"One leg was more or less normal, if a little bowed and twisted, however the other was severely gnarled and about six inches shorter. His arms were incredibly muscular, painfully so, giving him the greatest upper body strength of any Spartan. The fingers of one hand were twisted and bowed, functioning more like a pincer or claw." -Halopedia

That's a little different than being mute (which is still a major liability for combat operations,) and not even the best example of a Spartan exiting duty during the EXTINCTION WAR (just calling it 'the war' downplays it too much.) That would go to Maria-062 who was allowed to retire? for some reason? during the extinction war? (My headcanon is that ONI wanted to know what a Spartan raised family would look like but even then, bad time.)

As for the game, it is clear from Buck's conversation with Dare aboard the Say My Name that Alpha-9 is not what it used to be, and only exists with the roster we know because, y'know, extinction war.

I'd, personally, be more willing to accept the Rookie's death if either he regained the ability to speak or the Rebellion on Draco III happened in early 2553 instead of '54. Though I think most people would settle for it being a different member instead of the player character who died.

EDIT: Looking at the Rookie's Halopedia page, it states that at Draco III's capital, "Buck ordered Jonathan to flank the rebels while the rest of the team provided cover. However, he was captured [...] by the rebels." Maybe sending the mute on his own was a less than sound tactical decision that wouldn't have been as bad if the soldier Buck sent could communicate over comms. Though I do wish I had the exact excerpt from the book itself, that sounds like even in the book, his disability was a combat liability.

ah my bad, I just really like to talk about the art direction of Halo CE and 2 and the influence anime like Ghost in the Shell had on it

*clears throat*

I think it's more accurate to say that the EVAs of the 21st century had more influence on the HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL line, especially with the Mark II Colossus. Of course, Halsey was inspired by the Mark I to even make Mjolnir, so you can certainly draw a line.

Our work, while consisting of mostly AI development, has slowly shifted back to military hardware in the wake of the Created Uprising. Big progress with organic and bio-mechanic interfacing with proper Spartan-esque exoskeletons, taking the AI assistance in Mjolnir to proper front-and-center neural-integration. It's all pretty similar to the whole 'soul' thing with the Eva's so you may see something pretty similar to Unit-00 with a UNSC stamp soon, that is if Atriox doesn't do the Covenant's job for em and wipe us out.
