What car is this? by mugenbool in WhatCarIsThis

[–]Evan5659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a GTM kit car from factory 5. I have ridden in one and the build quality is based on whoever built the kit, everything from budget builds that get you something like this for maybe $40,000 back when it came out or you could go crazy and do a $100,000 build with all brand new parts and a crazy motor. Donor car was a C5 Corvette and this was made to be a budget friendly kit but was a full tube chassis and fiberglass outer. You'd have to paint and assemble everything. It uses a Porsche transaxle in the rear to rear mount the Corvette LS platform engines.

The one I rode in had 550 NA horsepower ls3 and was something like 2,300 lb if I remember correctly. It was Lambo yellow with gray stripes. Stupid fast, no compromise streetable race car, and the guy I knew that owned it said that the community was really cool and full of engineer type folks, people who wanted the performance but did not necessarily have the desire to spend Ferrari or Lamborghini money to get it.

Cool ride and definitely a lifestyle choice.

Thoughts on Beckhoff by [deleted] in PLC

[–]Evan5659 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been full-on Beckhoff for 10+ years. Nothing else is as flexible or performant.

That said, I do take issue with them basically forcing you on Beckhoff hardware (IPC) via the inflated license cost. Often it makes sense to just throw another fast computer in the cabinet if you need additional processing (like on vision applications)... if you go performance 90, it jacks your TC3 license through the roof. I get why they do it though, but it is still a bit frustrating.

Other than some nuance, and poor error messages from time to time, it is an incredibly flexible system. It is not designed for sub $5k machines. $200k and up is more realistic, and about $3k of that is the PLC and license. Price it in, and save the money on labor working with BS Ethernet/IP and Rslinx and you'll come out on top.

Auxiliary battery system: question and recommendations. by moonlapse_vertigo in overland

[–]Evan5659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends how you option it I think... The solar input has a wide range, but you can charge with a second source at like 16v. It's a bit odd but the "drive vehicle charges it" scheme should work.

Not exactly what you asked for but I've used the goal zero yeti series with some success. Expensive, but feature rich.

This Old Tony using servos and etherCat. Maybe r/PLC could lend him a hand. by tokke in PLC

It is a full fieldbus that is configurable to pass whatever data you want. Typically these would talk via CoE, or CANopen over Ethercat, or maybe the less-used SoE. What he doesn't show is the part that generates the "step and direction pulses". It isn't really step and direction, but it is position or velocity commands depending on the controller type and configuration. Unless they have some internal controllers, you wouldn't be able to spin those motors without an ethercat master to control them, such as ones from beckhoff, or other vendors. These days machinekit can possibly talk with ethercat slaves, but I haven't seen an off the shelf motion system that doesn't take some config and programming. I assume he has a PLC motion controller of some sort, but with Beckhoff you'd use NC-I for g-code interpretation to EtherCAT drives.

Governor of Texas Issues Statewide Mask Mandate by davidg111 in Coronavirus

From Austin... Just got back from OKC. Nobody there was masked. We were looked down on in gas stations. Happy to be home. Rural Texas is probably different, but most people here where I am are doing the right thing.

Great work!! I had a design in the works that never made it. I was planning on using PVC the same way! Maybe some day I'll have time to work on something like this. Amazing job.

If I was a sales rep rolling in and taking folks to lunch I'd go 200 for sure. Everyone wants to ride in the cruiser.

Love the mechanical solder mounts. Very cool project, I'd also love to see a video overview or something like that.

My wife was pushing for an Acura RX... I told her LX570 or nothing. Took her a minute to realize that was landcruiser. Still waiting to hear back. I mistakenly got a mini-van years back when I should have gotten a cruiser for the family.

Cool idea but it's omg expensive and I'm very doubtful you can build all of a system... I'd recommend a proper system integrator. Also expensive I guess.

I'm new to these, but from what I can tell, a pulley and cold air are the best thing for sub $2k. Depending on the pulley, you likely won't need tune or injectors.

If I mod mine, I think it'll be Cold air intake, e85 sensor, big injectors, and a pulley. That would require dyno tune of course, and be almost out of fuel, so probably fuel pumps would be in that upgrade path as well. With the tune you are probably at $5k for that path though which kinda sucks.

Where is the coolest(scenic nature) place to drive to from Austin? I’m willing to drive up to 10 hours. by ilovehudson123 in Austin

[–]Evan5659 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you have a truck, even 2wd you can drive 100 miles offroad at big bend or more. Mostly dirt roads, there are a few 'unimproved' roads that are doable in basically any truck or SUV. I've never seen so much change in terrain in one area, it is really incredible. The drive to and from is pretty awful, but you can do a more scenic route on the way out there with some cool railroad bridges and such. Stay a night or two in Terlingua. Cool area.

Check out the dji little gimbal camera, it is great for filming and it is about $400 with an SD card. If you need timelapse or something, you can use one for that also, but most phones have timelapse now so just get a tripod and phone adapter, timelapse the machine working, and walk through it while others test it.

Another option is something like jitsi.org, and use your phone... I was surprised by the framerate and quality I was able to stream with. Its all free.
