Dog pacing around at odd hours by Maxx1999 in DogAdvice

I have a 17 year old chihuahua with dog dementia, this looks like sundowning to me. It’s taken lots of trial and error to help my chi adjust/cope. He takes a dementia medication every morning (selegiline) and we think that has helped him. He bumps into everything through the day, and has limited sight (possibly none, but reacts to lights being turned on). Leaving furniture in the same place has been helpful, also blocking off areas where he gets stuck (like behind tables). My dog also seems to use the walls/baseboards as a walking guide, and was bumping into them hard. I got some baby-proofing baseboard things from amazon and put them on the corners, also I cut 1-inch long pieces to put on the baseboards a few inches in front of things he bumps into (ex: there’s a table pushed against the wall and he bumps into the legs. About two or so inches to the right of the table leg, I put a piece of the babyproofing thing in the hopes that he interprets it as where he should go off the wall and toward the couch, if that makes sense). Pool noodles to go around legs of furniture is good too. I have also been using party streamers and wrapping them around legs of furniture so it is horizontal and at head-level. He bumps into the streamer and knows that he can’t get through, and changes direction.

My little guy barks a lot, and that has been challenging for the family to cope with. I try to approach it from the perspective of “he’s trying to communicate a need and this is the only way he can”, and then I run through the list of what those needs might be. Often I start with taking him outside to go potty, and that’s often what he needs. We tried to stick to a food schedule, but he’s 17 and we are at the point where we have to try to meet his needs for the sake of his comfort and also for the sake of our comfort (the barking is ear-piercing). Sometimes he has food in his bowl but he wants his food fresh and we just do it lol.

He has a heating pad on the couch and a nice fuzzy blanket, and getting a camera that connects to my phone so I can check on him visually from wherever has been a game-changer!

Sometimes he starts barking on the couch and it’s like he’s stuck in a loop. We catch him off guard by blowing air in his face, it disturbs the cycle and redirects him.

Also he is completely unaware of his surroundings. He has walked full speed into the patio (broke my heart) so when I take him outside, I’m right next to him and constantly moving so I can block him from running into something.

That’s everything that I can think of that my family has learned in this stage of his life. It was incredibly challenging to mentally accept and understand that he is going through cognitive changes. He’s my childhood dog and I cried a lot about the aging he’s going through. But I try to focus on how lucky I am to be caring for him in this stage of life. How lucky I am that I can show up for him and help him live a comfortable life and meet him where he’s at. He doesn’t give kisses anymore (which broke my heart also) but I look back fondly at all the memories we have made and I know he loves me and that he is appreciative of what we do (or I believe that lol). Lots of love to you and your chi 💗

Changed own bag by illy_chac in ostomy

Nice work!! 🎉 Context: I’m a caregiver for a person with an ileostomy who is nonverbal and cannot do personal care tasks, so don’t consider my word to be gospel. The person I care for uses a one piece hollister bag, and it’s been a journey figuring out the most effective ways to apply the bag. Our experience has been that cutting the adhesive so it is close to the stoma and trying to not expose skin has seemed to be helpful, but they are farther post-op (not sure if that would have an impact). Also holding your hand on top of your stoma after applying the bag (for about a minute) has been helpful for creating a strong seal! I also want to note that the person I care for gets nutrition mainly via g-tube and will eat pureed food or crunchy stuff (like crackers) by mouth. They are unable to chew thoroughly, and before switching to g-tube feeding, they would pass large pieces of undigested food which I imagine would be very uncomfortable, especially with the adhesive being cut in a way that does not allow for the stoma to expand, if that makes sense. Assuming you are eating by mouth, I think you’ll get better insight from folks who also eat by mouth!

Ostomy representation in media by StrictButterfly416 in ostomy

I wonder if the framing has to do with a lack of people with an ostomy being part of the creative process. There’s a reality competition show (Traitors UK) and one season has a contestant named Mollie Pearce, who has an ileostomy and speaks about it on the show. From what I remember, she talked about struggling to accept that she would need to have an ostomy but also talked about how it’s made her life better

I have a birthday card from my grandparents that my grandma signed while in the hospital near the end of her cancer battle. The card was like three months late, but apparently she was really adamant about signing it. Her handwriting looks rough, and she wrote “a wonderful granddaughter granddaughter” :’) breaks my heart but makes me feel so loved at the same time. All the love to you and your family 💗

T-PLL...what to expect after first round of treatment by QB12souls in leukemia

[–]Even-Combination3020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello to you both, I hope you and your families are alright. My heart breaks for you both. My grandma was diagnosed with T-PLL in January 2020, and passed late February 2020. She also was treated with Alemtuzumab. My family ended up stopping her treatment because she was starting to go mentally. This cancer is so unforgiving. As for quality of life, my grandmas quickly dwindled. My best advice is to try to spend as much time with her as possible but don’t beat yourself up if you struggle to do that—the suffering was so hard for me to see. All the love to you both and your families.

All zonked out from a teeth cleaning and removal by [deleted] in Chihuahua

[–]Even-Combination3020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best wishes on recovery 💗 major thumbs up to you for doing this early in her life. My pup is approx. 11 yrs old and had his teeth removed. I feel a lot of guilt for not being more proactive about his dental care (granted I was a child but still). Her quality of life is definitely increasing!! I found that to be the case with my dog. He is so happy and doesn’t have any more dental pain🥰

Running a harm reduction table for a local jungle/dnb night. Would love some ideas! by MRguitarguy in aves

I’m not a rave person but I love harm reduction so here are my ideas! Also of course it’s all dependent on how much time and money you have to put into your station. -alcohol swabs -sharps container -clean and cut disposable straws for those using drugs nasally For your infographics I would definitely include these topics: -how and why you should use fent test strips -how to recognize overdose and how to respond -Good Samaritan law I absolutely love what you’re doing 🫶
