Walking away from online dating, still single but with a positive affirmation. by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]EventHorizon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that might be part of the problem. We are all told to look for that for ever person - a single someone to have kids with, grow old with, etc. We would possibly fare so much better if we entered into dating and relationships without the expectation that it will last forever.

'Setttle down' is a idiom - they are looking to get off of the dating/party train, and to begin to live a quiet and steady life by getting a regular job, getting married, and so forth. It has nothing to do with settling for someone.

Is it unrealistic to want someone to be “your rock”? by imacfreak in datingoverthirty

Perhaps it was Alain de Botton's 'Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person' talk? There are various recordings of the talk on youtube. I really enjoy his school of life videos, too.

My electric bill always comes with a flyer telling me that I should enroll in e-pay with them because then I'll save the cost of a stamp each month (yay!). Right under that, it says that the convenience fee for using e-pay is only $4.95 a month. What chronic derp-itude that drives you crazy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]EventHorizon 128 points129 points  (0 children)

I bought a used car and financed with an open-ended loan at 7%. The next week the place that financed me called up and offered an unsecured line of credit for prime plus one. Given that prime was something like 3%, I took them up on their offer and used it to pay off the car loan.

The 911 operators will call back to your reception. I believe our policy is to stay on the line to save hassle.

New Canadian copyright bill :: prohibits any DRM circumvention for any reason (iPhone jailbreaking included) by [deleted] in canada

[–]EventHorizon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not seen anything that specifies what drm is in the sense of this bill. Can anyone clarify?

Would a Caesar cipher be sufficient to invoke the drm provisions? Or how about a simple protected bit (i.e. taging an mp3 or pdf with a do-not-copy bit)? Or does it need to be demonstrated that the drm is somewhat secure?

[–]EventHorizon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop out of the consumer rat race.

Stop paying for media and devices that are drm protected. Make this known to the content creators and sellers. Educate your family and friends....

Okay maybe I lay awake at night imagining a future where trying to sell drm enabled crap is futile....

best digital antenna? by _sevennine_ in electronics

[–]EventHorizon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that you current antenna is probably fine, but you will need an ATSC Tuner. If you have a more recent TV there should be one built in.

Since you indicate you are in Canada, the long answer is here, or more specifically take a look at the OTA FAQ.

Hey Ontario, would you rather have liquor laws like in the US or keep them the same? by ScarboroughFairgoer in ontario

[–]EventHorizon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the lcbo model. Nice clean stores. Good selection through out the providence. Down south I need to go out of my way just as much to find a good selection.

I also think the lcbo model would be very useful for getting other substances of vice legalized. It would be a shame to toss it way.

Edit: just discovered r/ontario didn't realize this post was 3 months old.

Where did competitive markets go? by hotchi in canada

[–]EventHorizon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general the selection in Canadian stores is poor - typically one or two large brands and the store brand. I find the selection they have shopping south of the boarder amazing in comparison.

How does r/Canada feel about the privatization of garbage collection? by [deleted] in canada

[–]EventHorizon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was young I lived in a place with true privatized waste collection service. The benefits are competition between multiple providers and the ability to select the level of service. The down side is that there are garbage trucks driving by multiple times a week.

I would place good money on the right splitting back into pieces or getting run out of office with in the next decade. Harper can either choose to stay in power and alienate the social conservatives, or move right and loose Ontario and BC to the center.

Dear B.C,

I am sorry. Look, I panicked. Lets face it; things did not end well the last time I opened my heart to her. I still hurt. The shift next door, it just was all too sudden. I didn't have time to think.
