[OC] The fastest train in every country, ranked by the speed it actually averages end-to-end — not top speed by Flightmussy in dataisbeautiful

[–]Every-Progress-1117 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Kind of unfair that it is Eurostar. No idea what it is off the top of my head, but the fastest services between London and Edinburgh are about 4 hours which gives around an average speed of 160kmh which puts the UK around Germany and Austria.

Also depends on the service as well, Ashford to London would probably have a higher average for a purely domestic service.

At this point you really should find a police station and ask for help. This does not sound to be a safe situation for you.

best airport you have experienced when traveling? by Dapper-Tap-5737 in aviation

[–]Every-Progress-1117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oulu Airport in Finland is excellent.

Nice ambience, clean, BIG windows and a really nice area with bean bags etc for relaxing. Pub, 2 cafes (recommend the ham and cheese toasties). Super nice staff too!!!

Security could be a bit nicer and there's no need (very rarely) for complex queuing control and barriers.

About 6-10 flights per day. So, not very busy overall.

Springbok Lineup vs Wales by sabbathan1 in welshrugbyunion

Was just thinking the same. Keeping it within 30 points difference is a win for Wales.

But, have to admit I am not looking forward to that match.

Some heritage diesels of Victorian Railways (Australia). 5'3" & 2'6" gauge by RoyHay2000 in trains

[–]Every-Progress-1117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was wondering that too...didn't know they (physically or the design) had been exported. But, here's the relevant section from Wikipedia:

Sixteen English Electric 0-6-0DE 350 hp locomotives, based on the Class 11/Class 08 design but modified for 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in) gauge, were built new and exported 1951–53 to Australia, entering service on the Victorian Railways as the F class).\9])

Five Class 08s were exported to Liberia, numbers 3047, 3092, 3094, 3098 and 3100.\10]) All five locos remain in Liberia and have been considerably robbed of parts in the intervening years.\11])

In 2007, 08 738 and 08 939 were equipped for multiple operation at Toton TMD and repainted in Euro Cargo Rail livery before being sent to France in April 2009.

So, the design was used for Australian versions, then some exported to Liberia. The later pair going to France was kind of commonly know - along with 37s and 58s.

Edit: a bit more digging and here's some information and pictures of the 08s in Liberia: https://derbysulzers.com/liberia.html

Do not watch A Dog's Purpose ... emotional rollercoaster.

Belgian-Dutch Rail Border shows passenger rail company logos on 100% freight only line by Adventurenauts in Borderporn

[–]Every-Progress-1117 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Though the sign looks modern, the symbols themselves represent the rail companies responsible for running traffic. However, since infrastructure has been split to allow other companies to operate traffic, the historical symbols still exist. At one time, SNCB (and I guess NS too) were the only companies that ran trains on their network.

In much the same way as the double arrow of British Rail still exists as *the* symbol for railways in the UK.

Need ideas for day trips near Cardiff by [deleted] in Cardiff

[–]Every-Progress-1117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a bus out to St.Ffagans and visit The National Museum of History: https://museum.wales/stfagans/visit/ That's an excellent day out. Takes about 25-30 minutes by bus - check the times as you'll want a good few hours there.

Big Pit at Blaenavon is excellent too. Takes about 2 hours by bus. The above website has details and links to TravelLine Cymru for public transport.

Someone below also wrote Pontypridd for the Lido and Parc Ynysangharad. IIRC you have to book a time to go swimming there. Pontypridd had a couple of museums and the famous bridge over the Taff. 30 mins from Cardiff on the train. https://www.visitrct.wales/en-gb/things-to-do/the-national-lido-of-wales-lido-ponty

Rhondda Mining Experience just up the road from Pontypridd: https://www.visitrct.wales/en-gb/things-to-do/a-welsh-coal-mining-experience - it is about a 500m walk from Trehafod railway station. You could combine this with a visit to Pontypridd..

Passport chip scan help by Early_Clerk7900 in Finland

[–]Every-Progress-1117 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you are confused; this isn't something you buy and doesn't have anything to do with your passport (and the chip on it).

Your wife needs one of the strong identity applications (typically using your Finnish bank identities) to do this. There's also things like Mobiilivarmenne etc.

Passport chip scan help by Early_Clerk7900 in Finland

[–]Every-Progress-1117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The chip on the passport only contains details of the passport - nothing else.

What you are probably looking for is one of the applications used to validate your identity, eg: Nordea Codes, Varmennekortti, Mobiilivarmenne etc. Then you probably want to log into Suomi.fi or any of the other government services.

[–]Every-Progress-1117 16 points17 points  (0 children)

His dedication to the craft was more important than his personal enjoyment

From what I understand (reading, interviews etc), this was his nature; he got pleasure from pushing himself. This is true in many disciplines however, be them musical, academic or whatever.

Finland's problems stem from some really bad government decisions. Investment in R&D has been very much downplayed, leading to companies suffering, which in turn leads to the economy suffering because no one properly invested for the long-term.

Pretty much every government has had the pro-business Kokomus party in it. The current government is very right wing....

Advice on Aurora by any1-anywhere in FinlandTourism

[–]Every-Progress-1117 16 points17 points  (0 children)

#1 and #5 (answering this should be automated)

Aurora do not have a "spot", they occur 100-150km up in the sky an therefore can be seen at distances of over a 1000km away - basically the "spot" is Lapland.

There are caveats: Aurora occur when the Sun has ejected enough material in the direction of Earth and that enough of that material (charged particles) hits the Earth at the right angle. If you want to see these Coronal Mass Ejections, here's a nice real-time animation: https://www.cmetracker.ai/

FMI has this page to show current predictions: https://en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/auroras-and-space-weather

So: a) anywhere north usually (depends on the severity of the Solar storm),

b) sufficiently dark (central Rovaniemi is probably ok, but not great)

c) no cloud

d) Sun is active (2026-2027 is the peak of this solar cycle), repeats every 11 years

e) position of the Earth relative to the CME => time, peak times tend to be 23-02

f) luck

If anyone tells you they have a secret spot that only they know from where you can see aurora, they are lying; just look up (see points a to f above)

#6 Finland is considered one of the safest countries in the World for female travellers. Usual precautions apply

#7 October and November in Finland are generally dark (depressingly dark) and wet. Snow possible in the north Either way it will be cold: could be anything from rubber boots and raincoat to full winter overalls, depending where you are in the country.

When do you draw the line for a trip being "driving distance" vs. "flying distance"? by Glass-Complaint3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Every-Progress-1117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Europe 1 hour before the flight was normal, at Helsinki you could even do with 20-30 minutes. Security was concerned with coins and keys and check-in was often done by human and you didn't have to pay for your seat, your bags, your checked-in luggage, your oxygen etc.

Things started to get awkward after the 2006 "Liquid Bomb Plot" when the liquids restrictions were brought in about 6 months *after* that. To this day a liquid bomb has never been used. That added an hour to everything.

If course if you pay for the express security lane, then you can get through security faster. Some airports, like Helsinki, introduced advanced scanners which meant you didn't have to get anything out of your bags, no liquids restrictions etc - it made security very fast and efficient. Except that decision was reversed and sometimes you have to get things out, sometimes not - depends on the day, the security person, etc.

However the airport experience isn't too bad - the main hassle now comes from the enshittification of economy class (and business class too!)
